SAS is the UK's designated national centre for promoting and facilitating research in the humanities and social sciences. It receives national funding specifically for this purpose. Founded in 1994, it's a postgraduate-only institution within the University of London. It comprises eight internationally renowned research institutes, each specializing in a particular area of the humanities (such as law, classics, history, modern languages, etc.), along with several centres of excellence.

It's strategically located in Senate House in Bloomsbury, central London, close to the British Museum, British Library, and other University of London colleges.

Postgraduate Community: As a postgraduate-only institution with a relatively small student body (up to around 500 students), SAS fosters a focused, research-oriented, and scholarly community. Approximately one-third of its students are international.

  • Accommodation:
    • SAS does not have its own dedicated student halls of residence.
    • It does have access to a limited number of places ('quota places') in the University of London's intercollegiate halls for full-time students.
    • Many students choose to live at nearby Goodenough College, an independent hall specifically for postgraduate students, known for its community feel and events programme.
  • Academic Resources:
    • Libraries: Students have access to the extensive and specialized collections of the libraries within each of the eight SAS institutes, as well as the main University of London Senate House Library. These combined collections are a major global resource for humanities research.
    • Events: Students benefit from a rich programme of seminars, lectures, workshops, and conferences hosted by the various institutes, featuring leading scholars from around the world.
  • Location: Being in Bloomsbury provides excellent access to London's cultural institutions, libraries, transport links, and vibrant city life.
  • Community Feel: While primarily academic, SAS aims to be a friendly community, supported by the activities within individual institutes and the broader University of London student environment.

The School of Advanced Study is based in Bloomsbury, a peaceful, historic district known for its literary and academic legacy. This area has long been associated with writers, thinkers, and scholars—from Virginia Woolf to Karl Marx—and today it remains a hub for students and researchers.

It’s an ideal setting for focused study: leafy squares, elegant Georgian buildings, and world-class libraries are all within walking distance. You’ll find everything from quiet cafés to specialist bookstores, and the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between calm and cosmopolitan.

When you're not deep in research, there's plenty to explore just steps away from SAS:

  • The British Library – A short walk away and an essential resource for researchers, with millions of books, manuscripts, and archives.

  • The British Museum – Just around the corner. Whether you're into ancient history or looking for a peaceful place to wander, it’s a cultural goldmine.

  • Senate House Library – One of the UK’s largest humanities research libraries, right inside your academic home.

  • Russell Square & Gordon Square – Green retreats perfect for reading, picnicking, or clearing your head between seminars.

  • The West End – London's theatreland is only minutes away—ideal for an evening out after a full day in the library.

You’re also just a short walk from Soho, Covent Garden, and Oxford Street, making it easy to dip into London’s food, fashion, and nightlife scenes.

Living or studying in central London puts everything within reach. Whether you're commuting or exploring, travel is straightforward with these options:

  • Oyster Card or Contactless: As a postgraduate student, you can apply for an 18+ Student Oyster card for discounted travel on the Tube, buses, and trains.

  • Tube Access: SAS is served by several nearby stations, including Russell SquareTottenham Court Road, and Goodge Street—all within walking distance.

  • Buses: London buses are affordable, frequent, and offer a scenic way to move through the city.

  • Cycling: Santander Cycles are available nearby and many local streets are bike-friendly. Great for getting around Bloomsbury or heading to nearby parks.

  • Walking: One of the best things about studying at SAS is that so much of central London is walkable—from libraries to museums, cafés, and cultural landmarks.
