SAS is the UK's designated national centre for promoting and facilitating research in the humanities and social sciences. It receives national funding specifically for this purpose. Founded in 1994, it's a postgraduate-only institution within the University of London. It comprises eight internationally renowned research institutes, each specializing in a particular area of the humanities (such as law, classics, history, modern languages, etc.), along with several centres of excellence.

It's strategically located in Senate House in Bloomsbury, central London, close to the British Museum, British Library, and other University of London colleges.

Postgraduate Community: As a postgraduate-only institution with a relatively small student body (up to around 500 students), SAS fosters a focused, research-oriented, and scholarly community. Approximately one-third of its students are international.

  • SAS does not have its own dedicated student halls of residence. 
  • It does have access to a limited number of places ('quota places') in the University of London's intercollegiate halls for full-time students.
  • Many students choose to live at nearby Goodenough College, an independent hall specifically for postgraduate students, known for its community feel and events programme.

  • Libraries: Students have access to the extensive and specialized collections of the libraries within each of the eight SAS institutes, as well as the main University of London Senate House Library. These combined collections are a major global resource for humanities research.
