Our youngest son sublet at Mountaineer Village over the summer and had a great experience. We moved him home for the two weeks between the sublet and his lease, and were able to get him settled on move-in day. The apartments are clean, the staff if friendly and extremely responsive. One of my son’s roommates recently lost his apartment keys, and as soon as we alerted the office, they changed the locks and issued new keys. Kaitlin has been great to work with in the office, and Mr. Fred does a great job of keeping everything updated and maintained. The best part: the gorgeous sunrises, sunsets, and views in the photos our son sends us! He loves it there!

I’ve been living here for almost a year now, I’ve had the best experience, all the staff members have become amazing friends of mine, BAILEY has been the point of contact for solving and resolving all my problems and issues if any, she takes care of everything and everyone. Carolina, the manager is super kind and helpful too for all sorts of stuff and Kayla is there to help out in case everyone else is busy! Everyone is outgoing and sweet and I personally feel better with them around to take care of things !

DO NOT LIVE HERE! Biohazards and crime: There has literally been poop in the hallway for months. You claim it’s taken care of because you have one house keeper, which is clearly not enough, and I know for a fact they could hire a team with the money we pay. People get arrested outside my window 5+ times a day because the building is inches away from a unhoused shelter. The constant chaos means I can never get any work done or get any sleep. Privacy violations: The maintenance men are incredibly odd and will enter your apartment without any notice or asking for permission. Greedy management: They just take and take and take your money. The property is not properly cleaned, especially for the premium price we are paying. Because it is student housing, management thinks they can get away with anything. They completely take advantage of students, and the place is terribly run. Just AVOID living here and move on to the next option. There are much nicer places for cheaper prices. Legitimately go ANYWHERE ELSE than The Helmsman. I think my favorite part of living here was paying almost $2,000 a month while getting to hear the unhoused people directly outside of my window screaming about their drug choices of the week, terribly playing the guitar all night, and hearing CLOSE gunshots weekly.

I just want to give a huge shoutout to the front desk team worker named Bailey! She is one of the reasons I decided to get an apartment in the Helmsman! She's always so friendly, welcoming, and genuinely sweet. Every interaction is met with a smile, and she goes out of her way to make residents feel at home. Her positive energy really brightens the building, and it’s clear she cares about everyone who lives here. Truly appreciate her hard work and kindness, it makes living at The Helmsman even better!

I originally believed this to be a decent place, but over time my mind was changed. I’m going to get into their water issues, wall issues, noise issues, high costs, unprofessional employees, and how they take advantage of young students. Every single shower I took was cold (I lived in two different rooms, even adjusted the temperature limit stop, so no it wasn’t my specific shower). I never got sleep at night due to my window being 5 feet away from a very active homeless shelter. Which is fine, but it makes me question why is rent almost 2k? The walls are not sound proof at all, I could hear my upstairs neighbor running a marathon pretty much 24/7. I tried to move out early, but since it’s “student living” they won’t let you move out until you find a sublease. Well I found a subleaser, but an employee ended up promoting their other rooms to my subleaser when she called them about being interested in my room, taking even more of my money. I just saw in their Instagram that they just gifted my “almost subleaser” an electric scooter, but I haven’t even gotten my referral money? They promised me a $500 gift card for “referring”, but it’s been over a month. Which I believe isn’t even enough money for the emotional distress they’ve caused. All of my other sublease options backed out because the helmsman charges $500 just for a sublease application fee, along with making us pay an INSANE amount to transfer it over. Maintenance men have entered my apartment without asking, any warnings, or any emails. This is equivalent to a dorm, rather than an apartment. The one thing I do like is the pool, even though it faces towards a hospital! I will be using that pool this summer since it’s nearly impossible to find anyone who’d want to sublease here. I will also say their snack room is convenient, but makes me upset thinking that I wasted even more money here. I truly don’t want to hear any excuses for y’all treating students this way, which I noticed was a pattern in your responses. Just simply do better. I also expect to see the referral money I was promised THIS week (it’s shocking enough I was only offered a $500 gift card after being taken advantage of). I’ve lived at another complex for 3 months now and it’s 100x nicer for half the price, trust me and take my advice. Do not do student living, but specifically do NOT live at the Helmsman.
