My son was taking a year abroad, and his roommate plans fell through, so I ended up handling the housing search myself. First of all, start as soon as possible. There are housing options in Ithaca, but you want to find the right place for your kid. The 12‑month lease for a nine‑month school year isn’t ideal, but that’s just how it works in Ithaca. Be diligent, go through every resource you can find, and don't expect any help from Cornell. Read the online forums, go through Reddit and the others and glean what you can. Some reviews are honest, some are obvious shills, and plenty written are by kids who never read their leases and then blamed the landlord for everything. I even dug through the Ithaca Police and Cornell Campus Police blotters to figure out which areas felt safest and what kinds of issues popped up. CONTACT PJ APARTMENTS. They’ve been doing this for a long time, they offer solid apartments, they take good care of their buildings, fix things when they are needed, they communicate well and you won't get overcharged. When you get your lease, read through it, ask questions, treat them with respect, and believe me when I say they'll take care of you. My son lived about a block and a half down the hill from Collegetown. Quick walk to campus, safe area, and surprisingly quiet. He didn’t have a single issue all year long. Ithaca winters are long and cold, and the heat always worked. He studied a lot in his apartment, and the internet never went down. Kitchen, bathroom, neighbors—no problems. Move‑in and move‑out were straightforward. Parking was close by. It’s never easy having your kid so far away, but knowing my son was in a good apartment with reliable management, in a safe area that was close to campus and his social life - all this made a huge difference.
