The Elements - E3, houghton-mi

I lived at hillcrest for 2 years and recently graduated MTU and I think it’s fair for me to write an honest review for this apartment after I received my security deposit back. The rent was fair during the time of my lease which included all utilities besides electricity. I didn’t have to pay for an on campus parking permit while I was living at hillcrest and I walk to campus and back everyday. The hill can be a challenge for disabled folks but for me it wasn’t that bad. The rent I paid which I considered to be more on the expensive side in the Houghton/Hancock area but considering the facts of the convenience location, covered utilities, and in unit washer/dryer I think I actually saved money in the long run. The conditions of the apartment were great as well. Appliances were not the newest nor were it stainless steel but it does the job pretty well. My favorite thing about the apartment is that it has in unit washer/dryer so it saves me lots of quarters and also saves the time for me since I don’t have to take my laundry to a laundry room. The management was pretty on point too, I didn’t have many maintenance requests but if I had any they were usually fulfilled the next day. And if I had a problem that I communicated over email or phone, they were usually resolved over the next business day as well. Sure enough I can say that the property management do care about the apartments and tenants. Definitely one of the best landlords/property management that I have dealt with. I have leased with terrible slumlords in the houghton area and honestly I would pay a bit more than average to lease with landlords who care rather than a cheap hell hole. My only complaint about this apartment is that one of the bedrooms in the 3 bedroom units does not have windows or vents due to the floorplan. Not sure if that’s an OSHA violation but because the lack of ventilation in that bedroom it can get super hot in no time. So if you end up in one of those bedrooms I recommend you open up the door and keep a fan by the door to keep air circulated. Overall I really enjoyed my time at hillcrest and honestly living there at my final years at tech was the best decision I made.

Refuses to fix internet issues, and no air vents in the bedrooms--no central AC/heating. Can't reach landlord/owner by call or email, even by emergency number. Appliances are okay, but oven heats up very slow. Good location.

Not enough parking, will not take responsibility for that, nor compensate for needing to park by the football field
