The Husk and The Helm, cullowhee-nc

One thing I love about this apartment complex is how active they are. They are always hosting events/activities to engage in and host a welcoming environment. They have complimentary snacks and drinks in the clubhouse most weeks, they host food trucks, group events such as bachelor nights, game nights, sports watching nights, raffles, and so on. They are also animal friendly! I always go into the clubhouse with my German Shepard to give him the complimentary dog treats they have at all times! I stayed in a 4 bed apartment and I loved how spacious it was especially for having a large dog breed. I had resigned a lease with Husk, but then got a job back at home 6 hours away since I am graduating in 2 months and I went to the office to cancel my least fully expecting there to be a fee as a consequence of resigning and then cancelling, but Sterling and Meghan were so kind to not give any fee for cancellation and were willing to cancel my lease for free due to my circumstance. I enjoyed my time here very much and would recommend it to anyone, but especially someone with an animal so that you and your fur baby feel welcomed where you live!

Chris at The Husk Apartments consistently goes above and beyond. He’s quick to respond, helpful with any issues, and always professional. Any time something comes up, he handles it efficiently and makes the whole process easy. His effort and attitude really improve the overall living experience here.

The Husk is the most luxurious complex in Cullowhee, and placed conveniently from WCU. The cat tran, gym, and pool are great amenities that I use daily. The complex management often hosts parties, food trucks, and other events free to residents. There's always a place to park which is more than WCU can say for dorm living. The management seems to really want to accommodate every tenant and fixes mistakes if any occur. Overall a great place to live! 2 YEAR UPDATE: As a longtime tenant of H&H, I can say with confidence that this is truly the best place to rent with in Cullowhee. The new management has also been sure to add even more great new events for students. We had an entire week full of events for exams. My furry friends also love the pet amenities and pet themed events (free pet food/treats/toys!). There is also a large dog park on property for the dogs to roam free and play together, along with doggy bag stations around property. As a grad student, I’ve been utilizing the clubhouse workstations which are a great tool to stay focused. The gym facilities are also great for a morning or evening workout!

The building is under new management as of about August 2025 but so far it been okay. My only real complaint is how slow maintenance is (over 3 weeks) and the lack of lawn care. Besides that the rooms are quite nice and clean. No cockroaches. They do occasionally activities in the club house for all. Sarah has been exceptionally helpful she will occasionally text resident to see if husk is meeting expectations and helps in anyway if there is a problem

The apartments are okay, but my experience with management and maintenance was pretty bad. I got charged a large deposit when I first moved in, more than twice the rent (by law, max is 2x rent), and now that I left, they’re being sketchy about it. I’ve reached out 5 times to get confirmation on the deposit, and they haven’t been able to give me a straight answer, and every time they have refused to email me about it. The last staff member I talked to in person just told me all my information had been erased from their system, and it couldn’t be accessed anymore. By now it’s been 40 days (30 days is the max time allowed by law, safe for situations where the extend of the damages can’t be determined, which is not the case here since they claimed no damages on my move out statement), and I still haven’t received my deposit or any concrete information on when/if they plan to send it. The company managing this property has 1.7/5 stars on google reviews and it’s full of issues similar to this.
