5748 Blackstone by 3L Living, chicago-il

Absolute nightmare!!! Residents report no heat for entire winters, rat infestations, ignored maintenance requests, poor communication, and serious habitability concerns. Management routinely fails to respond, basic repairs go unresolved, and many tenants describe conditions as unsafe and unacceptable. The low rent is not worth the constant problems. Rent here only if you have no other options or avoid at all cost!!!

Avoid this building—serious safety, habitability, and security issues. We spent the entire winter without a working radiator, despite repeated in-person and written requests to management. The apartment later developed a rat infestation, and the smell of multiple decaying rat corpses in the walls of our apartment eventually made our unit unlivable. Several exterior windowpanes were entirely missing or improperly installed. The building itself is also insecure: the front door has been violently broken, and the glass panes in the entry doors have been shattered. Anyone can just walk in. There have been multiple thefts in the building. The elevator hasn't worked for 2-3 months. There are holes in the ceiling and water constantly leaks onto the lobby floor. Management has taken no meaningful action. We’ve had to pay for temporary housing out of pocket and are still waiting on a refund for an overpaid account balance. Management has yet to respond to our notices and taken no responsibility. This building is not safe, and tenants are left exposed and unprotected. We've had to take legal action against this property. I recommend potential tenants live elsewhere. Edit: The Owners of 3L Living should be ashamed of themselves for being slum lords.

Helpful maintenance team! Tony from the maintenance term is truly amazing. He came to solve my problems of light bubbles professionally, quickly, and friendly. And helped me to prepare for the next step of fixing. If you have any problems such as light bubbles and such, please reach out to them on the website, nice and help individuals like Tony will most likely come to tackle your problems.

I would love to give them 5 stars if they would only respond! We'll month's later i actually have an apartment in hydepark now. Unfortunately this reality never responded to me at all they almost act like a prejudice reality due to the none responsive behavior i experienced like i was some lower class person trying to get an apartment don't come and apply with this reality company cause they are very rude towards minority people you can tell very easily that is what's going on even over the phone.

I cannot dis-recommend living here strongly enough. While the price and proximity to the University are enticing, you should not live here unless you absolutely cannot afford to live anywhere else. Obviously, the rooms are small, but you know that going in. The radiators actually work quite well for the Chicago winters. However, your ability to enjoy your room and bathroom are almost entirely dependent on the people next to you. If the people next to you are loud, stay up late, or smoke, you WILL know about it from your room. If people are out in the hallway talking at 3am, you WILL hear it. If your suitemate (the person you share the bathroom with) is not cleanly, you will battle them/have to clean it yourself the entire time you live here. The hallways and stairwell are constantly full of trash, food squashed into the carpets, and the smell of cigarettes and weed. One time, someone left a bag of frozen shrimp in the lobby on a warm day, and the smell permeated the whole building. The laundry room is similarly gross. Many of the washers and dryers do not work. More importantly, they charge $1.75 to wash and $1.50 to dry your clothes. Perhaps worst of all, the communal kitchen that you will have to spend a lot of time in if you aren't fortunate enough to have a kitchen in your room was perpetually filthy. Water leaks out from the sink and collects in giant puddles on the floor. The sink itself does not drain, and is therefore full of disgusting water, leftover food, and, astoundingly, people's dishes. The fridges fill up with food that then rots as it sits in there for months. The same goes for the pantries, unless someone steals the food before it can rot. The oven and stove are usually covered in grime and crumbs. I love to cook, but having to use this kitchen prevented me from enjoying cooking even a single time during my 9 months in 5748 S Blackstone. To top it off, property management is impossible to reach during the day, and will often require multiple calls/texts/emails to respond. On the day I was supposed to move in, I was unable to contact anyone and had to stay outside until a resident could help me get in. The positive things I can say are that the place is affordable, very close to the University of Chicago, and has pretty good wifi. A lot of the residents there are pretty nice too. In short, don't live here unless you have to. It's gross and loud.
