Elephant and Castle
Elephant and Castle gives you the shortest journey to LSBU. Many addresses around St George’s Circus, New Kent Road and Walworth Road fall within walking distance of the Southwark campus.
The area handles everyday needs well. Supermarkets, cafés, gyms, pharmacies and bus stops occupy the streets around the main junction. Elephant Park has added more shops and places to eat, while Mercato Metropolitano gives groups an easy place to meet.
Convenience affects the rent. A room here will often cost more than a similar room in Camberwell or Surrey Quays. Part of that extra money pays for the ability to walk to class and return home during a long gap in your timetable.
Check the route from the building entrance, not the distance shown on a map. Major roads and crossings around Elephant and Castle can add several minutes.
Borough and the South Bank
Borough works well for anyone who wants to stay near LSBU, London Bridge and the river. Waterloo and the South Bank cover the western side of this central area.
A home here also helps if you have a part-time job around London Bridge, Waterloo or the West End. You can often reach work without adding another long journey after class.
Street noise changes quickly around this part of London. One road may stay busy late into the evening, while the next feels more residential. Visit the property after normal working hours when possible. Daytime viewings rarely show you how the area feels at night.
Kennington and Lambeth
Kennington and north Lambeth give you quieter residential streets without taking you far from Southwark. Many homes lie within walking distance or one direct bus journey from campus.
The Imperial War Museum and its surrounding park add some open space to an otherwise central location. Kennington also has supermarkets, cafés, local pubs and Northern line access.
Postgraduates often consider this part of London because it feels less hectic than Elephant and Castle. The exact address still matters. Some streets connect neatly to campus, while others require a longer walk to the nearest bus stop or station.
Walworth and Camberwell
Walworth Road connects Camberwell with Elephant and Castle through a regular bus corridor. This makes both districts useful for anyone willing to trade a short walk for a lower weekly price.
Walworth has plenty of food shops, supermarkets and inexpensive places to eat. Camberwell has its own local centre, along with cafés, pubs and connections towards Peckham, Brixton and central London.
Morning traffic can slow the bus journey. Check the route during the hour when you expect to travel. A timetable estimate taken late in the evening will not tell you what happens before a 9 am lecture.
Bermondsey
Bermondsey lies east of the LSBU campus. The neighbourhood includes converted industrial buildings, newer apartment developments and several private student residences.
The route to university depends heavily on the property address. Some buildings connect well by bus. Others work better through London Bridge or the Jubilee line.
Bermondsey has a stronger local identity than many purpose-built developments around Elephant and Castle. Food markets, independent cafés and Maltby Street Market give residents places to spend time near home. The trade-off comes through the longer journey to class.
Surrey Quays and Deptford
Surrey Quays and Deptford usually cost less than the addresses closest to LSBU. They also place you farther from campus.
These districts suit people who attend university on fewer days or feel comfortable with a longer journey. Surrey Quays connects through the Overground and local buses, while Deptford provides rail and bus links towards central London.
Do the full calculation before choosing a room here. Lower rent helps, but transport costs and travel time reduce the saving.
