Cardiff Metropolitan Accommodation

Cardiff Met traces its history to the Cardiff School of Art, which opened in 1865. Five academic schools now cover Art and Design, Management, Technologies, Education and Social Policy, and Sport and Health Sciences. The university divides most teaching between Llandaff and Cyncoed.

Llandaff handles much of the teaching for art and design, management, technology and several health-related subjects. Cyncoed houses education and major parts of sport and health sciences, together with specialist sports facilities. The Complete University Guide placed Cardiff Met 72nd in its 2027 table, while Times Higher Education placed it in the 1001–1200 band for 2026.

The accommodation system follows the campus divide. Cardiff Met controls nearly 1,000 bedrooms at Cyncoed and Plas Gwyn and allocates more than 1,200 en-suite bedrooms through partner halls. Cyncoed has 549 rooms, including catered, self-catered, en-suite and shared-facility categories. Plas Gwyn has 390 en-suite bedrooms arranged in flats of eight.

That makes Cardiff Metropolitan University student accommodation in Cardiff more specific than the university name suggests. The course campus tells you which side of Cardiff you need each morning.

Cardiff Metropolitan University University Accommodation

A Cardiff Met week develops differently on each campus. Cyncoed carries much of the university’s sport culture, with the swimming pool, gyms, athletics facilities and Students’ Union activity nearby. Llandaff has its own gym, cafés, study rooms and SU presence, followed by Llandaff village and the Taff Trail outside the grounds.

Every Cardiff Met student receives free Met Active membership for 2026/27. The membership includes gym access at Llandaff and Cyncoed plus the swimming pool at Cyncoed. SU sports clubs compete in BUCS, while societies cover courses, cultures, faith, interests and campaigning.

The neighbourhood changes in the evening. Albany Road and City Road suit a Roath or Cyncoed address. Cathays contains the densest concentration of student venues. Llandaff gives a quieter return after class, with cafés and pubs around the village. The centre handles larger events, shopping, restaurants and match days at the Principality Stadium.

Cardiff’s compact centre also helps friendship groups based in different areas. A plan in town rarely requires a lengthy cross-city journey, but the final bus home still needs checking before a late event.

Register with a local GP after move-in. Health, education and sport courses can add placements, schools and training locations to the timetable, so the main campus may not remain the only weekly destination.

Llandaff and Plas Gwyn

A Western Avenue timetable points first to Llandaff. Plas Gwyn lies near the teaching campus and keeps the route short without placing the room in the city centre. Every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, and eight residents share one kitchen and dining area. Utilities, Wi-Fi and contents insurance form part of the fee.

Llandaff village brings cafés, pubs, local shops and the Taff Trail into the same part of Cardiff. Danescourt and Llandaff North can also work, but the railway, river and main roads affect the route from one street to another.

Anyone checking student accommodation near Cardiff Metropolitan University Llandaff should begin with Plas Gwyn, North Court and addresses around Western Avenue. A city-centre hall can still fit the timetable, though the 1, 2 or M1 bus will handle most campus journeys. Cardiff Met estimates roughly 15 minutes on foot between North Court or Plas Gwyn and Llandaff campus.

Cyncoed and Lakeside

Cyncoed gives sport, education and social policy courses the shortest route. University halls occupy the campus grounds, placing lectures, training, the library, sports facilities and the Students’ Union in the same location.

Lakeside and the roads around Roath Park add private houses within walking or cycling distance. The area has fewer purpose-built halls than the city centre and carries plenty of family housing, so room availability can narrow quickly.

Useful student accommodation near Cardiff Metropolitan University Cyncoed follows the 52 bus corridor or falls within a realistic walk of Cyncoed Road. The 52 enters the campus and links it with Roath, Cathays and the city centre.

Heath and Maindy

Heath and Maindy occupy the space between both campuses, although each address produces a different journey. Clodien House and North Court keep Llandaff within a manageable bus or cycle route, while Cyncoed may need another connection.

Whitchurch Road covers groceries, cafés, takeaways and everyday errands. Shared houses can cost less than city-centre studios, particularly when an established group rents the entire property.

This part of Cardiff also helps with placements at the University Hospital of Wales. Put campus, placement and part-time work addresses on the same map before committing to the postcode.

Roath, Penylan and Albany Road

Roath puts Cyncoed on a direct bus line. The 52 travels through Albany Road and Penylan before entering the university grounds, while supermarkets, cafés and food outlets cover most weekly errands along the same corridor.

The Parade, City Road and Newport Road contain several private halls. These addresses keep the centre nearby without charging the premium attached to some central studios.

A request for private student accommodation close to Cardiff Metropolitan University often returns properties in this area. Check which campus the listing measures, because a quick route to Cyncoed does not give the same result for Llandaff.

Cathays

Cathays contains Cardiff’s largest concentration of student houses, supermarkets, takeaways and late-opening venues. Neither Cardiff Met campus falls within a short walk, but bus and cycle routes connect the area with both.

The M1 links Llandaff and Cyncoed through Cathays, Whitchurch and Roath. A house near the correct stop can remove a long walk before and after the bus journey.

Property condition changes sharply from one street to another. Check heating, damp, bedroom sizes, kitchen storage and noise during the viewing.

City Centre, Adamsdown and Newport Road

The city centre contains the highest concentration of studios and managed en-suite rooms. Northgate House, Crown Place and Ty Pont Haearn occupy central or near-central addresses.

Neither campus lies in the centre. Llandaff uses the 1, 2 or M1 route, while Cyncoed relies mainly on the 52 and M1. A central address can still suit regular rail travel, evening work or a course that requires fewer campus days.

Adamsdown and Newport Road carry lower entry prices than many premium studios. The Fitzalan, West Wing and Adam Street Gardens belong to this side of the market.

The tenancy total deserves more attention than the first weekly figure. Cardiff Met’s 2026/27 money guide gives the following examples:

Accommodation type

Example contract cost

Approximate weekly cost

Cardiff Met self-catered halls

£7,056 over 42 weeks

£168

Cardiff Met catered halls

£9,450 over 42 weeks

£225

£7,040 over 44 weeks

£160

Higher-priced private hall

£15,759 over 51 weeks

£309

Private house share with bills

£8,238.46 over 51 weeks

About £162

These examples show how contract length changes the order of a shortlist. A £149 room over 51 weeks reaches £7,599. A £167 room over 44 weeks reaches £7,348. The room with the higher weekly price costs £251 less over those contracts.

Cardiff Met also estimates £129 per month for groceries and toiletries, £36 for local travel, £15 for a mobile phone, £42 for printing and course materials, and about £19 for laundry. Its example budget adds £51 for social plans and £48 for meals out each month.

A private house can show a low bedroom price and leave gas, electricity, water and broadband outside the agreement. Cardiff Met estimates private accommodation at roughly £390 to £1,000 or more per month, depending on the property type. The university also warns that a landlord may request a UK guarantor or several months of rent in advance.

People under 22 can use My Travel Pass for £1 single bus fares in Wales. Cardiff Met’s MetRider covers university travel during the 2026/27 academic year. These discounts reduce fares but cannot return the time lost to two lengthy journeys every day.

University Halls

Cyncoed halls include catered and self-catered rooms, private bathrooms and shared-facility categories. Catered contracts include breakfast and dinner during term, while each flat retains a kitchen for lunches and snacks.

Plas Gwyn follows a single setup: every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, and eight rooms share one kitchen and dining area. Bills, Wi-Fi and contents insurance form part of the fee at both university locations.

Private En-suite Room

An en-suite gives you a private bedroom and bathroom inside a shared flat. The kitchen becomes the main communal area, so the number of bedrooms matters. Six people with a properly sized kitchen can manage without much trouble. Eight people with one small fridge will notice the shortage within days.

Most private student accommodation near Cardiff Metropolitan University uses this format. Check the floor plan, flat capacity, fridge shelves and number of ovens before paying more for a premium room label.

Studio

A studio keeps the bathroom and kitchenette inside one self-contained room. It removes shared cooking and cleaning, but the additional privacy can add thousands of pounds over a 44- or 51-week tenancy.

Look closely at the cooking equipment. Two hob rings, a microwave and an under-counter fridge may cover occasional meals but frustrate anyone who cooks each day.

Private Room in a Shared Flat

Property websites often use “private” and “shared” in the same description. Private shared student accommodation near Cardiff Metropolitan University normally means a private bedroom inside a flat with a communal kitchen or bathroom. It does not mean two people share the bedroom.

The phrases private shared student accommodation close to Cardiff Metropolitan University and shared student accommodation near Cardiff Metropolitan University usually refer to the same arrangement when the bedroom remains private.

Search reports also contain the awkward phrase private shared student accommodation close for Cardiff Metropolitan University. Read it as a request for a private bedroom in a shared property near Llandaff or Cyncoed, not as a separate room category.

Private House

A private house gives a group control over the entire property. Each person normally takes one bedroom, then the household shares the kitchen, bathroom and lounge.

A low bedroom rent can lose its advantage once utility bills, broadband and a 51-week tenancy enter the total. Agree on bedroom prices before signing, especially when one person gets a large double room and another takes the smallest room.

A useful shortlist starts with campus, current availability and contract length. A gym or cinema cannot rescue a forty-minute journey to the wrong side of Cardiff.

Prices and room status can change during the booking period.

North Court

North Court fits a Llandaff timetable. Cardiff Met gives an estimated 15-minute walk from the Llandaff campus or five minutes by bus. En-suite bedrooms go through the university allocation process, while direct booking pages cover studios.

The direct studio list currently shows sold-out categories from £219 per week. Keep the property in reserve, but do not build a budget around a room with no vacancy.

Clodien House

Clodien House occupies the Heath side of Cardiff and keeps Llandaff within a manageable bus or cycle journey. The building has en-suite bedrooms, shared kitchens, a common room, laundry facilities and cycle storage.

Its current listing shows a £165 en-suite over 51 weeks, but all rooms have sold out. The £8,415 contract total gives useful price context; it does not count as an available offer.

Northgate House Apartments

Northgate House gives the city-centre shortlist more room variety. Shared two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments appear alongside private studios, with utilities and Wi-Fi included.

Current bookable listings start at £182 per week. The city-centre address connects with both campuses by bus, so check each journey against the first class and final evening service.

Collegiate Crown Place

Crown Place has en-suite rooms, studios and full apartments from £179 per week. Current property information places Cyncoed about 15 to 20 minutes away by bus and Llandaff at roughly 20 minutes.

The building includes study rooms, a gym, cinema space, a courtyard and laundry. Add the value of those facilities only when they will form part of the week.

Canvas The Parade

Canvas The Parade starts at £167 per week and includes private en-suite rooms and studios. The Parade is located on Albany Road, City Road and the 52 bus corridor nearby, which gives Cyncoed the shorter campus route.

The rent covers utilities and Wi-Fi. Shared study rooms, a gym and cinema room form part of the building, though the contract length can alter the final total sharply.

The Fitzalan

The Fitzalan currently starts at £155 per week for a bedroom in a two-bed apartment. Studios cost more. Bills form part of the rent, and the building includes study and social rooms.

Newport Road gives the property a lower entry price than several central studios. Reaching Llandaff or Cyncoed requires a bus, so add the relevant fare or MetRider cost to the tenancy calculation.

Ty Pont Haearn

Ty Pont Haearn also starts at £155 per week and includes en-suite rooms and studios. Its position near the eastern side of the centre keeps Cardiff Central, Queen Street and city shops nearby.

The property carries more value for a timetable that can absorb a bus journey to campus. Daily early sessions may make a room in Llandaff or Cyncoed worth a higher weekly price.

Current listings place the lowest available private-room prices in this order:

Property

Ty Pont Haearn

Canvas The Parade

Alwyn Court

Room category and contract dates

Current Cardiff listings support these entry prices, although room categories and availability can change.

Clodien House displays £165, and North Court shows studio prices from £219, but both currently have sold-out direct rooms. A sold-out rate belongs in a market comparison, not an active shortlist.

The cheapest private student accommodation close to Cardiff Metropolitan University may not carry the smallest weekly number. A £155 room on Newport Road can cost more than a £167 room nearer the correct campus once travel and tenancy length enter the total.

Place four figures beside every option: full rent, upfront payment, monthly extras and campus travel. That page will remove most false bargains.

Buses to Cyncoed

The 52 enters Cyncoed campus from the city centre through Albany Road and Penylan. It operates hourly for much of the day, with extra departures during peak periods.

Roath and Penylan gain the clearest benefit from this route. A room near the wrong end of either neighbourhood can still add a long walk to the stop, so use the full postcode.

Buses to Llandaff

The 1 and 2 stop outside Llandaff campus on Western Avenue. Services 24, 25, 62 and 63 stop near Llandaff village or Howell’s School.

City-centre and Cathays addresses can use these services. Llandaff and Danescourt properties may need no bus at all.

Travel Between Campuses

The M1 MetRider links Llandaff and Cyncoed through Whitchurch, Cathays and Roath. The service returns for the 2026/27 academic year, and the MetRider pass remains valid from September 2026 to June 2027.

A course taught on both sites gives the M1 particular value. Check the module information before assuming that every timetable requires regular inter-campus travel.

Walking and Cycling

Llandaff and Cyncoed both reward a local address. Plas Gwyn keeps Llandaff within a short walk, while Cyncoed halls remove the commute for courses taught there.

The Taff Trail gives Llandaff a traffic-free cycle route towards central Cardiff. Roath, Penylan and Cathays also have workable cycle routes to Cyncoed, although busy junctions need checking before move-in day.

Secure cycle storage matters more than a decorative social room when a bicycle will handle the campus journey each morning.

Bus Discounts

My Travel Pass gives people under 22 £1 single fares on eligible bus journeys in Wales. Cardiff Met’s MetRider covers city travel and extends to Barry and Newport during the academic year.

A pass reduces fares, not journey time. Keep the number of weekly campus trips in the calculation.

Rail and Travel Home

Llandaf station serves the western side of the city, while Cardiff Central and Queen Street handle local and intercity services. A city-centre hall gives the shortest journey to the main stations; a campus hall usually needs a bus or cycle first.

For Cardiff Airport, rail passengers travel through Rhoose Cardiff International Airport station and continue to the terminal by local transfer. Check early departures before booking a flight because the first connection may not meet check-in time.
