School Of Psychotherapy & Counselling Psychology Accommodation

The School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology, now formally integrated as Regent's School of Psychotherapy and Psychology within Regent's University London, was founded in 1990. It quickly became one of the first UK institutions to offer Masters and Doctorate degrees in Psychotherapy and Counselling. The school runs one of only two Existential training courses in the UK.

The campus sits within the parkland of Regent's University London, directly inside Regent's Park, London's largest open green space. This gives students a calm, green environment for intensive study. SPCP students are part of the wider Regent's University London community.

The school's training is accredited by the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the British Psychological Society (BPS), and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Honorary professors include Professor Brett Kahr and Ruby Wax OBE

Student life at SPCP, as part of Regent's University London, runs differently from a typical undergraduate experience. Psychotherapy training is often intensive and partly part-time, so the social scene tends to build around peer groups and training cohorts rather than traditional student nightlife.

Students connect through the Regent's University London Students' Union, which runs events and activities across the university. SPCP-specific societies tend to be professionally or academically focused, but the wider university community has clubs and groups across a range of interests.

Regent's Park is right on the doorstep, which gives students easy access to jogging, cycling, and open-air breaks between sessions. The university also has its own sports and recreation facilities.

For food and casual socialising, Marylebone High Street has a good selection of cafes and restaurants a short walk from campus. Camden Town, just a few stops away, has live music venues, markets, and a wide variety of places to eat and drink. Camden Market carries vintage clothing, international street food, and a generally different atmosphere from the more polished Marylebone strip.

London Zoo and Regent's Park gardens are within walking distance of campus. The school also runs guest lectures from honorary professors and industry figures, which adds a professional networking layer to campus life.

Students register with a local NHS GP practice near their term-time address in Central or North London. Regent's Park and Marylebone are among the lower-crime areas in central London.

Choosing where to live in London comes down to commute time, cost, and community. The School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology sits in one of Central London's most well-connected areas. Most SPCP students, particularly postgraduates, look for independent accommodation across North and Central London.

Marylebone / Regent's Park

A 0 to 10-minute walk to campus. This is as close as it gets. The area sits right on the edge of Regent's Park and runs at Central London Zone 1 pricing. It is quiet, green, and professional in atmosphere. Students who want zero commute and access to open green space right outside their door find this area practical.

Kings Cross / Waterloo Area

Around 1.3 to 1.85 miles from campus. Students reach campus by walking or taking the Underground. Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) in these areas runs between £200 and £335 per week. These neighbourhoods are two of the best-connected points in London, with fast Tube access across the city. Students doing clinical placements elsewhere in London find the transport links here especially useful.

For accommodation options close to campus, Grosvenor House at 0.92 miles and Chapter Kings Cross at 1.3 miles are two strong options offering modern student living. AXO Waterloo starts at £200 per week and is one of the more affordable nearby listings.

London, especially the Regent's Park area, costs more than most UK cities. The figures below cover weekly expenses and exclude rent, which will be the largest part of your budget.

A student at the School of Psychotherapy Counselling Psychology should budget roughly £150 to £220 per week on living costs, not counting accommodation.

Here is a typical weekly expense breakdown:

Groceries and Food: Expect to spend £30 to £60 per week. This depends on how often you cook versus eating out.

Transport: With an 18+ Student Oyster photocard, students get a 30% discount on adult-rate travelcards and bus and tram passes. Weekly transport costs typically run £31 to £37. Baker Street and Great Portland Street stations, both near campus, give fast access across London.

Household Bills: Students in purpose-built student accommodation usually have utilities and internet bundled into weekly rent.

Socialising: A casual meal out in London costs around £12 to £25. This varies a lot based on personal habits.

Mobile Subscriptions: A UK SIM-only mobile plan runs around £5 to £6 per week.

Course Costs: Psychotherapy and counseling training has additional costs which are not associated with undergraduate degrees. These costs include fees for personal therapy hours, clinical supervision and professional body registration. Factor these into your monthly budget from the start.

The UK Home Office and UKCISA set a minimum funds requirement for Student visa applicants. As of 11 November 2025, this is £1,529 per month (around £352 per week) for London-based students, for a maximum of nine months. This is a regulatory figure for visa purposes, not a realistic spending average.

Picking the right room type means weighing privacy, social interaction, and budget against each other. Here are the main options available near the School of Psychotherapy Counselling Psychology:

Private Room (En-suite)

A private room in a shared flat, often called a cluster flat, gives you your own bedroom and bathroom while sharing a kitchen and living area with flatmates. Prices typically start from around £270 to £300 per week and vary by property and location. This suits first-year students or anyone who wants some social atmosphere without giving up personal space. A shared kitchen rota keeps things manageable.

Studio Flat

A studio gives you a private bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette all in one self-contained space. In central London, studios generally start from £400 to £450 per week. Postgraduate students, international students, and anyone who prefers a quieter, more independent setup find studios practical. They are more private but less social by nature, so joining university societies helps balance that.

Shared Room

Shared rooms, where two or more students share a single bedroom, are less common in London PBSA. They are the most budget-friendly option. Clear communication with your roommate from the start avoids most friction.

Entire Place

Renting a whole flat or house, alone or with friends, gives the most flexibility. This route usually goes through private landlords or letting agents. Small flats in central London typically start above £500 per week, with bills on top. Groups of friends or older postgraduate students who want more independence find this setup works well. Budget separately for utilities, internet, and council tax where applicable.
