Best Areas for Student Housing in Kingston Upon Thames

Jesmond:

  • Proximity to University: Very close to Newcastle University's main campus (a comfortable walk for many departments). It's also well-connected by bus and Metro to Northumbria University's City Campus (a short journey).
  • Access to Public Transport: Excellent. Jesmond has its own Metro station (Haymarket line), providing direct and quick access to the city centre, both universities, and other parts of Newcastle. Numerous bus routes also run through Jesmond.
  • Affordability: Generally one of the more expensive student areas in Newcastle. Rent for shared houses and flats tends to be higher compared to Heaton or Fenham. However, some more affordable options can be found, especially further away from the Metro station and main shopping streets.

Heaton:

  • Proximity to University: Offers good access to both universities. It's a reasonable bus or Metro ride to Newcastle University's main campus. It's also conveniently located for Northumbria University's City Campus (again, via bus or Metro). Parts of Heaton are walkable to some Newcastle University facilities, depending on the specific location within Heaton.
  • Access to Public Transport: Very good. Heaton is served by several Metro stations (Byker, Chillingham Road, Walkergate) on the Yellow line, providing direct links to the city centre and both universities. Numerous bus routes also operate throughout Heaton.
  • Affordability: Generally more affordable than Jesmond. You can typically find shared houses and flats at more budget-friendly prices. The cost can vary within Heaton, with areas closer to Chillingham Road and its amenities potentially being slightly more expensive.

Fenham & Arthur's Hill:

  • Proximity to University: Slightly further from the main campuses compared to Jesmond and Heaton. However, both areas are well-served by direct bus routes to Newcastle University and Northumbria University's City Campus. The journey by bus is generally manageable.
  • Access to Public Transport: Good. Fenham and Arthur's Hill have frequent bus services connecting them to the city centre and the universities. While there isn't a direct Metro line running through these areas, bus connections to Metro stations are usually available.
  • Affordability: Typically the most affordable of these three areas. Rent for shared houses and flats is generally lower, making it an attractive option for students on a tighter budget.

City Centre:

  • Proximity to University: Very close to Northumbria University's City Campus (often within walking distance). Offers good public transport links (Metro and bus) to Newcastle University's main campus (a short ride).
  • Access to Public Transport: Excellent. The city centre has multiple Metro stations (Haymarket, Monument, Central Station) providing access to all parts of Newcastle and beyond. It's also the central hub for many bus routes.
  • Affordability: Can be expensive, particularly for modern, purpose-built student accommodation. However, some more affordable shared housing options might be available in less central parts of the city centre.
