Highfield
Highfield gives the main campus its shortest residential routes.
The area surrounds University Road, Burgess Road, Highfield Lane and Southampton Common. Private houses, flats and smaller student buildings occupy the streets around the campus boundary.
Highfield residents can reach the Hartley Library, Students’ Union and Jubilee Sports Centre without using a bus. Avenue Campus and Boldrewood also remain accessible on foot from many addresses.
The limited private supply near University Road can push rents above those in Swaythling or northern Portswood. Inspect the exact bedroom because some landlords divide traditional family houses into compact student rooms.
Southampton Common provides the nearest substantial outdoor space. The route between the Common and Highfield remains busy during the academic day, although individual residential roads become quieter during the evening.
Portswood
Portswood forms Southampton’s established student district.
Portswood Road has supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, pharmacies, takeaways and regular buses. The residential streets on either side contain a large share of the city’s student houses.
Highfield Campus usually takes 10 to 25 minutes to reach from Portswood, according to the address. Properties near the northern end of Portswood Road give the shortest route. Homes closer to St Denys add time.
Hampton Square currently advertises private rooms and studios from £195 per week on its property page. Stanley Studios begins at £235, while The Court Yard lists its available studio from £255.
Portswood gives returning students plenty of house-share choice. Check the number of bathrooms, kitchen storage and heating system before agreeing to a group tenancy.
Bassett and Glen Eyre
Bassett lies north of Highfield and contains quieter residential streets, university halls and access to Southampton Common.
Glen Eyre forms the university’s largest residential community. The site provides shared-bathroom rooms, en-suites, studios and limited one-bedroom flats. Highfield and Boldrewood remain nearby, while buses cover the city centre and other university sites.
Green Wood Court occupies Bassett Green Road and currently begins at £130 per week for a private room. The property provides 33-, 41-, 45- and 51-week options according to room type. Its on-site U2 stop connects residents with university campuses and central Southampton.
Bassett gives residents more separation from Portswood’s busiest streets. Evening shopping and social plans may require a bus or a longer walk.
Swaythling
Swaythling lies north-east of Highfield and provides direct access to Wessex Lane halls, City Gateway and Swaythling railway station.
Wessex Lane has the lowest published university hall rate for 2026–27. A standard shared-bathroom room costs £139.09 per week. En-suite rooms begin at £194.67, while studios start at £252.56.
City Gateway stands near Swaythling station, a convenience store, gym and medical practice. It provides shared apartments, en-suites, studios and one-bedroom flats under 41- and 51-week contracts.
Traditional student houses also appear around Burgess Road, High Road and the streets towards Portswood. The area often provides lower rents than central Highfield.
Train access helps residents who travel through Southampton Airport Parkway or Eastleigh. The railway connection matters less for a timetable based entirely at Highfield.
Avenue and Southampton Common
Avenue Campus occupies Highfield Road beside Southampton Common.
Humanities students gain the most from this location. Highfield Hall stands next to the campus and takes about two minutes to reach on foot. Highfield Campus also remains nearby.
Highfield Hall provides part-catered rooms and self-catered studios. The part-catered fee includes weekday breakfast and a main meal, Saturday brunch and Sunday lunch during term.
Private rooms around Highfield Road and the Common can cost more than equivalent houses deeper into Portswood. The location saves time for Avenue lectures and gives residents direct access to the park.
London Road and Bedford Place
London Road and Bedford Place lie between Highfield and the city centre.
Archers Road halls occupy this part of Southampton. Standard en-suite rooms cost £180.53 per week under 38- or 41-week contracts.
The district has restaurants, cafés, bars, supermarkets and quick access to the central parks. Highfield usually requires a Unilink journey or a bicycle ride.
City-centre properties such as Southampton Crossings and Cumberland Place also occupy the wider area. Southampton Crossings currently starts at £199 per week, while Cumberland Place begins at £215.
This neighbourhood fits a timetable divided between campus and city-centre work. A Highfield-only student will spend more time on buses than someone in Portswood.
City Centre
The city centre gives residents Westquay, Southampton Central station, Above Bar Street, cultural venues and part-time employment near home.
Vincent Place currently begins at £189 per week. Orion Point starts at £194, Canvas Capital House at £138 and Hamwic Hall at about £140 on current private listings.
The University’s City Centre Campus occupies Guildhall Square, although most University of Southampton courses continue at Highfield or a specialist campus. Unilink services connect central Southampton with halls, railway stations and university buildings.
A property platform may group these residences under student accommodation in Southampton even when Southampton Solent University provides the shorter walk. Check the University of Southampton campus distance before booking.
Old Town, Ocean Village and the Waterfront
Ocean and earth science students use the Waterfront Campus at the National Oceanography Centre on European Way.
The campus stands close to Ocean Village in southern Southampton. Highfield lies 3.5 miles away, while Southampton Central station takes around 15 minutes by bus. Unilink services stop outside the campus.
Old Town and Ocean Village provide flats, studios and private rooms within a shorter route of the waterfront. Queens Gate, Vincent Place and several city-centre residences enter this comparison.
A Highfield address creates a lengthy journey for daily NOC teaching. Waterfront students should prioritise the direct bus route and the final walk from the stop.
Shirley and Southampton General Hospital
Southampton General Hospital occupies Tremona Road near Shirley and Lordshill.
Medicine students receive teaching in the hospital’s South Academic Block and use its clinical skills rooms and Health Services Library. Highfield lies around two miles away, with a typical walk of about 45 minutes. Unilink buses stop outside the hospital.
Shirley offers private houses, flats, supermarkets and local bus services. It gives hospital teaching a shorter route than Portswood or Swaythling.
A course may divide teaching between the hospital and Highfield. Check the likely timetable before moving too far west.
Winchester
Winchester School of Art occupies a separate city.
Erasmus Park provides university-managed en-suite rooms from £177.45 per week under 41- or 51-week contracts.
Private Winchester listings include Collegiate Riverside Way from £167 and Cathedral Point from £179 on the current House of Student results.
The university operates a shuttle between Highfield and Winchester School of Art. Art students should still begin their housing comparison in Winchester because a daily journey from Southampton adds considerable time.
