Student life at SGS College looks different depending on the campus you attend. There isn't one central student district shared by everyone, so your surroundings will largely be shaped by whether you're based in Filton, WISE, Stroud, Berkeley or one of the college's other specialist sites.
The college's Students' Union plays an important role across its campuses, supporting student representation, activities and welfare. For students who are new to the area, getting involved with college events can also be a useful way to meet people, particularly when commuting means you may not have the same social routine as students living in dedicated halls.
Sports and Fitness
Sport is a significant part of the SGS offering, particularly at the WISE Campus in Stoke Gifford.
SGS Sport provides access to dedicated sporting facilities and supports students who want to combine their studies with competitive or recreational sport. The WISE campus also houses specialist facilities linked to the college's sports provision.
Students studying Sport and Outdoor Leadership at Stroud have a different setting, with the surrounding Five Valleys offering plenty of scope for outdoor activities alongside their formal coursework.
Those living in Filton or Stoke Gifford can also make use of local leisure centres, gyms and sports facilities around the North Bristol area.
Social Life Around Stroud
Students at the Stroud Campus have a smaller-town experience.
Stroud's town centre has independent cafés, pubs, restaurants and local shops, while the surrounding Five Valleys provide opportunities for walking and other outdoor activities. The town's well-known farmers' market is another regular feature of local life, attracting residents and visitors from across Gloucestershire.
For students who prefer a quieter setting to central Bristol, Stroud can offer a different pace without feeling disconnected from the wider region.
Social Life Around Filton and WISE
The experience is different for students based at Filton or WISE.
Both campuses sit within South Gloucestershire and are close to Bristol, so students can combine college life with access to the city's larger selection of restaurants, bars, live music venues and cultural events.
The North Fringe also has its own retail and leisure facilities, meaning students don't necessarily need to travel into central Bristol for everyday shopping or entertainment.
This can be particularly useful for students living locally, as it gives them access to city facilities without having to make the journey into central Bristol every time they want to go out.
Arts, Performance and Culture
Students studying creative subjects have several opportunities to engage with the arts through SGS itself.
The Bristol Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA) is based at WISE, alongside the Bristol School of Art and other specialist creative provision. The college's different sites therefore give students opportunities to work in environments closely connected to their subjects.
Those studying at the Queens Road campus in Clifton are also close to Bristol's established arts scene, galleries and cultural venues.
Healthcare and Wellbeing
Students can register with an NHS GP close to their term-time address, whether they're living in Stroud, South Gloucestershire or Bristol.
SGS also has its own wellbeing support for students. Support is available through tutors, Education and Wellbeing Mentors and college counsellors, with dedicated contacts across campuses.
For students living away from home, having access to both local healthcare and college-based support can make the transition to independent living considerably easier.
Safety
Safety can vary by neighbourhood rather than simply by town or city.
Students living close to their campus will generally become familiar with their local routes quite quickly. Those commuting by train or bus should pay particular attention to their return journey in the evening and check the final connection before heading out.
As with any area, sensible precautions such as keeping valuables secure and avoiding poorly lit routes late at night are worthwhile.
