Royal College Of Art University Accommodation

The RCA is globally recognised as a leader in art and design education and research. A public research university solely dedicated to postgraduate art and design education and research. It offers advanced programmes across a wide range of creative disciplines.

The RCA has been consistently ranked the world's number 1 university for Art & Design for ten consecutive years (2015-2024) in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Founded in 1837 as the Government School of Design, it's the world's oldest art and design institution in continuous operation. It received its Royal Charter and university status with degree-awarding powers in 1967.

The RCA offers an intense, research-driven environment for experienced creative practitioners.

  • Postgraduate Culture: The atmosphere is geared towards advanced study, critical inquiry, independent research, and experimentation. Learning is heavily practice-led and studio-based.

  • Facilities: Students have access to world-class, specialist facilities and technical expertise across the campuses. This includes extensive workshops (ceramics, glass, metal, wood, printmaking, textiles, digital fabrication), photography/film/sound studios, robotics labs, advanced computing suites, libraries, archives, and exhibition spaces.

  • Community: You would be part of a diverse international community (students typically from over 70 countries) of postgraduate artists, designers, researchers, and renowned faculty who are leading practitioners in their fields. Peer learning, critiques, seminars, and visiting lectures are integral.

  • Students' Union (RCA SU): Represents postgraduate students' interests, organises events and exhibitions, supports student initiatives, and runs spaces like the ArtBar.

  • Accommodation: The RCA has very limited student accommodation capacity, primarily offering places via partner providers (like GradPad near White City). Most students secure their own private accommodation (shared flats/houses or private halls) in London, and the university provides resources and guidance for this search.

RCA Accommodation: RCA has limited university-managed accommodation, primarily located in Battersea (near that campus). It does not guarantee housing for all students, especially given its postgraduate focus. Students needing support finding accommodation should use the resources provided by RCA, including their subscription to the University of London Housing Services (ULHS).

Private Rentals (Shared Flats/Houses): This is the most common housing solution for RCA students. Popular areas often depend on the primary campus location and budget:

  • For Kensington: Renting directly in Kensington/South Kensington/Knightsbridge/Chelsea is extremely expensive. Students often look in nearby areas like Earl's Court, West Kensington, Fulham, Notting Hill, or Hammersmith, commuting via Tube/bus.
  • For Battersea: Options include Battersea itself, Clapham (very popular with young professionals and students), Wandsworth, Putney, or potentially areas across the river like Fulham or Chelsea (requires crossing Battersea Bridge). Good bus/rail connections are key.
  • For White City: Shepherd's Bush, Hammersmith, Acton, parts of North Kensington or Notting Hill are popular choices in West London with good Tube/bus links. These areas can offer relatively better value compared to Kensington.

Private Student Halls (PBSA): Numerous private halls are located across London. Students choose based on which campus they need to access most frequently and their budget.

  • There are PBSAs in areas like Earl's Court, Hammersmith, Shepherd's Bush, Vauxhall, and King's Cross/Bloomsbury that could be considered, requiring varying commute times to the different RCA sites. Examples mentioned near White City include White City Residence; near Kensington/West London include iQ Hammersmith; near Battersea might involve looking towards Vauxhall (Vega Residence) or Clapham. Central London PBSAs are generally very expensive.

Travel options depend heavily on which campus site you need to reach. Students typically use London's public transport network.

General London Travel:

  • Oyster Card/Contactless: The easiest way to pay for travel on the Tube (Underground), buses, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth Line, and some National Rail services within London. Pay-as-you-go fares are capped daily and weekly.
  • 18+ Student Oyster Photocard: Eligible full-time students living in London can apply (£20 fee) for 30% off season Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes.
  • 16-25 / 26-30 Railcard: Can be linked to an Oyster card for 1/3 off off-peak pay-as-you-go fares on TfL rail services and National Rail.
  • Cycling: Possible with dedicated cycle lanes in many areas. Santander Cycle hire scheme is widely available. RCA provides cycle parking at its sites.

To Kensington Campus (SW7 2EU, near Hyde Park/Royal Albert Hall):

  • Tube: Nearest stations are South Kensington (Piccadilly, District, Circle lines - approx. 10-min walk), High Street Kensington (District, Circle lines - approx. 10-min walk), and Lancaster Gate (Central line - approx. 15-min walk). Knightsbridge (Piccadilly line) is also walkable (~20 mins).
  • Bus: Routes 9, 10, 52, 70, 360, 452 stop nearby (stops include Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gore, Prince Consort Road).

To Battersea Campus (SW11 4AY/NL, south of the river near Battersea Bridge):

  • Tube: Not directly served. Requires onward travel from stations like Sloane Square (District/Circle) plus bus, Vauxhall (Victoria line) plus bus, or the newer Battersea Power Station station (Northern line extension) plus a walk/bus.
  • Train (National Rail): Battersea Park and Queenstown Road (Battersea) stations are approx. 15-20 min walk away, with services towards Victoria or Waterloo. Clapham Junction is a major nearby hub accessible by bus.
  • Bus: Routes 19, 49, 170, 319, 345 stop near Battersea Bridge / Hester Road, close to the campus.

To White City Campus (W12 7FN, West London):

  • Tube: White City (Central line - approx. 5-min walk) and Wood Lane (Circle, Hammersmith & City lines - approx. 6-min walk).
  • Bus: Routes 72, 95, 148, 220, 228, 272, 283 stop nearby (White City Estate, White City Station, South Africa Road).
