Accommodation in central London is a significant expense and requires early planning.

Guildhall Hall of Residence:

Sundial Court: The School's dedicated hall, located very conveniently on Chiswell Street (EC1Y 4UP), moments from the main buildings. Offers 176 single rooms within shared flats (3-6 bedrooms sharing kitchen/bathroom). Includes practice rooms, laundry, 24/7 reception, and a common room/bar. Places are limited; priority often given to first-year undergraduates and students with specific needs. The cost for 2024-25 was stated as £231 per week.

Private Rented Accommodation (Shared Flats/Houses):

Barbican/City of London/Clerkenwell/Farringdon: Most convenient walk-to-campus locations but typically very expensive and rental options can be limited.

Shoreditch/Hoxton/Old Street: Popular, vibrant areas north of the City, walkable or a short commute. Still expensive, but shared housing is common. Good transport links.

Islington (Angel, Highbury): Further north but well-connected via Northern Line/buses. Offers more housing variety but requires a commute (approx. 20-30 mins).

East London (e.g., Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Stepney Green, Stratford): Generally more affordable options further east, well-connected by Tube lines (Central, District, H&C, Elizabeth). Commute times will be longer (30-45+ mins).

South London (e.g., Southwark, Borough, Elephant & Castle, Bermondsey): South of the river, accessible via Tube/bus. Prices vary.

Private Student Halls (PBSA - Purpose-Built Student Accommodation):

Numerous private halls are available across London, offering studios or en-suite rooms, often with amenities like gyms, common rooms, etc.

Options exist relatively close in areas like Shoreditch (e.g., iQ Shoreditch, Scape Shoreditch), Old Street (e.g., Chapter Old Street), Aldgate, Islington, or Southwark, but these tend to be very expensive (£300-£500+ per week).

More budget-friendly PBSAs can often be found further out, requiring longer commutes.

University of London Intercollegiate Halls: Check eligibility; Guildhall students may be able to apply for some UoL halls, though priority may go elsewhere.

Given its location within the Barbican complex in the City of London (Zone 1), Guildhall students primarily rely on London's extensive public transport network.

Tube (London Underground): This is usually the most efficient way to reach the School.

Barbican Station (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan lines): Approx. 5-minute walk.

Moorgate Station (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Northern lines): Approx. 5-7 minute walk. Offers National Rail services too.

St Paul's Station (Central line): Approx. 10-minute walk.

Bank Station (Central, Northern, Waterloo & City lines, DLR): Approx. 10-15 minute walk.

Liverpool Street Station (Multiple Tube lines, Overground, Elizabeth Line, National Rail): Approx. 15-minute walk or short bus/tube ride.

Buses: Numerous routes serve the area well, stopping near the School on streets like Silk Street, Beech Street, Aldersgate Street, and London Wall. Key routes include 4, 43, 55, 56, 76, 100, 153.

Train (National Rail): Moorgate, Liverpool Street, Farringdon, and Cannon Street stations are all relatively close, providing mainline connections.

Student Discounts:

18+ Student Oyster Photocard: Highly recommended for eligible full-time students living in London. It costs £20 (admin fee) and provides a 30% discount on weekly and monthly Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes.

  • 16-25 Railcard / 26-30 Railcard: Can be linked to an Oyster card to give a 1/3 discount on off-peak pay-as-you-go Tube, DLR, Overground, Elizabeth line, and some National Rail fares.
  • Pay As You Go: Using a standard Oyster or contactless payment card is often best for infrequent journeys. Daily/weekly price capping automatically limits how much you spend.
  • Walking/Cycling: Viable if living relatively nearby (e.g., in Sundial Court or parts of Shoreditch/Clerkenwell). Secure bike parking is available. Santander Cycles (bike hire scheme) are also an option.
  • Driving: Not advisable due to the Congestion Charge zone, Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges, and extremely limited and expensive parking.
