Searching for Portsmouth student accommodation out of term time was not easy; it should have come up straight away, but only appeared on another site. The building is modern and generally clean, but reception smells like an ashtray. The room was clean, with hard floor. The matress wasn't great, but I'm comparing it with my memory foam one at home. I stayed at the start of July, so it was hot weather. The room was like a sauna, about 10-20 degrees warmer than outside. There is no air coing in the room, so bring a fan if you want to survive. The window is only able to open a tiny crack, probably to stop the students from escaping. The kitchen is not available and a note on the kitchen door warns you to stay out. There is free wifi for guests, so ask at reception when you arrive. Key card entry to the room. When you leave your room, tap the card reader again to get the red light and lock the door. The local clock tower chimes every 15 minutes, day and night. Final warning, the bin lorry arrives at 4am on a Thursday morning, and the noise WILL wake you up. There is no free parking nearby, so I stayed in the euro car park ner the station and paid with the paybyphone app. On the positive side, the accommodation is cheaper than anything else I could find, even with paying to park. £37 per night for the room.

I would not recommend staying at Catherine House. The maintenance service is extremely poor. Repairs take far too long, and it’s incredibly frustrating when issues are left unresolved for weeks. The staff are slow to respond, and communication is often lacking. The lifts are frequently broken, causing major inconvenience, especially for residents living on the upper floors. Despite repeated complaints from students, it feels like Yugo does not genuinely care about the people living here or take residents’ concerns seriously. One of the biggest concerns is the lack of privacy. Staff have entered rooms without giving proper notice or ensuring it was appropriate to enter. This is unacceptable, as residents could be changing, in the shower, or otherwise expecting privacy. Regardless of whether the resident is male or female, everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in their own accommodation. Overall, the poor maintenance, slow responses, unreliable facilities, and lack of respect for residents’ privacy make this a disappointing place to live. I would advise future students to consider other accommodation options.

I've enjoyed my year at Catherine House. Quality of my flat has enhanced my first year at University. Particularly my bedroom which is comfortable, has plenty of storage space and good size. My kitchen space helped to improve sociability and to get to spend time with flatmates. Again, a good size and lots of storage. I have used maintenance a few times and found them to be of a good response time and helpful.

I’ve had a really positive experience living at Catherine House. The two ladies on reception are absolutely incredible. They go above and beyond to help with anything you need and genuinely make the stay more comfortable. They’re always welcoming, approachable, and willing to sort things quickly — which makes a huge difference when you’re living away from home. The maintenance staff are also brilliant. They respond very quickly to requests and are always friendly and professional when they come to fix something. It’s reassuring to know that any issues get dealt with efficiently. Having staff onsite 24/7 is another big plus. It’s really handy knowing there’s always someone available if something goes wrong or you need assistance, especially late at night. One thing to be aware of is that room sizes can vary quite significantly, even when paying the same amount of rent. That can be a little frustrating — especially as my room is one of the smaller ones. However, the room does still have everything you need, and the space is functional and comfortable once you’ve settled in. Also, be prepared for your legs to get stronger — the lifts do tend to break down quite a bit, so you’ll definitely get your steps in. Overall, Catherine House feels safe, well-managed, and supportive. I’d definitely recommend it to other students looking for accommodation with a friendly and reliable team behind it.

Stayed in their Portsmouth property for one night. Brand new building right next to Portsmouth and South sea station. I had 3rd floor room and stayed on a Saturday night but sound insulation was very poor and you could hear traffic and crowd coming out of centre of Portsmouth until about 4am. Rooms are good and comfortable with own shower. Communal kitchen only has a kettle and a mug and also has TV room.
