Student Life in Bournemouth

The town of Bournemouth has much to offer when it comes to things to do in the day; from spending days graced with sunshine at the Bournemouth Pier, Durley Chine or East Cliff beaches to exploring the marine life at the Bournemouth Oceanarium.  With a vibrant student community, Bournemouth is one of the best places to meet friends and make memories with your mates.

Culture and Heritage: For a cultural experience you can tour the various galleries and museums as well as visit the landmarks dotting the town; we recommend Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum and St. Peter’s Church. Bournemouth International Centre, Chaplin’s & The Cellar Bar and the O2 Academy Bournemouth always have something happening, so you can take a pick!

Shopping: You can shop to your heart’s content at two main shopping centre areas, namely, Commercial Road, The Square, Old Christchurch Road and The Triangle.  For indulgence in shopping, all your needs will be taken care of at Castlepoint mall and Sovereign Shopping Centre. For antiques, vintage and boutique shopping the Boscombe area is an excellent choice.

Parks and picnic: You could plan a picnic with friends, enjoy a walk or just read a book in the shade of a tree at the Bournemouth Upper Gardens or Bournemouth Lower Gardens.

Festivals: The city is host to many festivals that you can be a part of such as the Plymouth Seafood Fest, Flavour Fest, Pirate Weekend and Ocean City Sounds.

Restaurants, Cafes and Bars: The Bournemouth nightlife falls nothing short of legendary! If you’re in the mood to let your hair down, you can dance off to some great beats at The Old Fire Station, Sound Circus and Cameo, only to name three. If you are in the mood for some drinks in a lively, yet casual environment with friends; Smokin’ Aces, Sixty Million Postcards, Bar So and Le Chic are few of the best bars and pubs to go to.

Best Areas for Student Housing in Bournemouth

Winton:

  • Proximity to University: Primarily convenient for the Talbot Campus. It's generally a 15-30 minute walk or a short (5-15 minute) bus ride via the frequent UNIBUS service. For the Lansdowne Campus, the bus journey is typically 20-30 minutes.
  • Access to Public Transport: Excellent bus links. The UNIBUS service has several routes through Winton connecting directly to both campuses and the town center. Standard bus services also operate frequently. This good connectivity helps offset the slightly longer distance to the Lansdowne Campus for some parts of Winton.
  • Affordability: Generally considered one of the more affordable student areas. Shared houses, in particular, offer competitive rental rates. You can expect to find rooms in shared houses ranging from approximately £90 to £150 per week (excluding bills in some cases, though many student lets now include bills). Smaller flats might be slightly more expensive. The overall cost of living in Winton tends to be lower due to more budget-friendly shops and amenities.

Charminster:

  • Proximity to University: Offers a mid-point in terms of proximity. It's roughly a 20-35 minute bus ride to the Talbot Campus and a 10-20 minute bus ride (or a 20-30 minute walk) to the Lansdowne Campus.
  • Access to Public Transport: Very good bus connections. Charminster Road is a main bus route with frequent services, including the UNIBUS, heading to both campuses and the town center. The variety of transport options makes it a convenient location despite not being immediately next to either campus.
  • Affordability: Affordability in Charminster is generally mid-range. While you can find shared houses at reasonable prices (around £110 to £160 per week, potentially including bills), flats might be slightly more expensive than in Winton due to its more central location and vibrant atmosphere. The cost of living is moderate, with a good mix of affordable and slightly pricier amenities.

Talbot Village:

  • Proximity to University: Unbeatable for the Talbot Campus – often within a 5-15 minute walk to most university buildings and facilities. For the Lansdowne Campus, it requires a bus journey of around 15-25 minutes via the UNIBUS.
  • Access to Public Transport: Excellent, especially for reaching the Lansdowne Campus via the dedicated UNIBUS. Bus stops are conveniently located throughout Talbot Village. The included annual bus pass in the rent for many university-managed accommodations here is a significant advantage.
  • Affordability: Generally one of the more expensive areas, particularly for university-managed halls. Rents in halls can range from £135 to over £200+ per week, often including bills and the bus pass. Private rentals in the immediate Talbot Village area can also be on the higher side due to the high demand for proximity to campus. However, the included bills and bus pass in some options can make budgeting simpler.

Lansdowne:

  • Proximity to University: Ideal for the Lansdowne Campus, often within a 5-15 minute walk. It requires a 15-25 minute bus journey via the UNIBUS to reach the Talbot Campus.
  • Access to Public Transport: Excellent. The Lansdowne area is a major transport hub with numerous bus routes connecting to all parts of Bournemouth and beyond. The main bus station is located here.
  • Affordability: Typically one of the most expensive areas for student housing due to its central location and proximity to amenities and the Lansdowne Campus. Rents for student halls and private flats can range from £150 to £250+ per week, often including bills in halls. Shared houses might offer slightly more affordable options, but still tend to be on the higher end compared to Winton or parts of Charminster. The cost of living in Lansdowne can be higher due to its proximity to the town center's shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

Moordown & Ensbury Park:

  • Proximity to University: Further away from both main campuses. Expect bus journeys of 20-40 minutes to either Talbot or Lansdowne Campus, depending on the specific location and bus routes.
  • Access to Public Transport: Bus services are available, but may be less frequent or direct than in the more central student areas. It's crucial to check specific bus routes and timetables.
  • Affordability: Generally offer the most budget-friendly options for student housing. Rooms in shared houses can be found for under £100 to £140 per week. However, students must factor in the potentially higher travel costs and time.
