About Royal Veterinary College

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC), a constituent college of the University of London, stands as the oldest and largest veterinary school in the English-speaking world. Founded in 1791, the RVC has a distinguished history of leading the way in veterinary practice and science. It holds the unique distinction of being the only veterinary school worldwide to receive the highest level of accreditation from the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education), RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), and AVBC (Australian Veterinary Boards Council Inc.).

The RVC is consistently ranked as the world's top veterinary school in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Its commitment to research is evident, with a significant portion of its research being rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. The college offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing, and biological sciences. Students benefit from a practical learning experience, gaining exposure to diverse clinical cases through the RVC's extensive network of hospitals and practices, including Europe's largest small animal referral hospital.

The college has two main campuses: the Camden Campus in central London and the Hawkshead Campus in Hertfordshire. This multi-campus presence provides students with access to both a vibrant urban environment and a more rural setting with extensive facilities.

Student Life at Royal Veterinary College

Student life at the Royal Veterinary College offers a well-rounded experience that combines rigorous academic study with a vibrant social environment. The RVC fosters a strong sense of community among its diverse student body, which includes individuals from over 50 countries.

Community and Support:

  • Close-knit environment: Unlike larger universities, the RVC prides itself on smaller class sizes, allowing students to get to know their peers and faculty, fostering a strong communal sense of belonging.
  • Supportive network: The supportive environment extends beyond current students, with staff, lecturers, and alumni actively engaging with and supporting the student community.
  • Student Union: The Students' Union plays a vital role in organizing social and academic opportunities for students across all cohorts and courses.

Academic and Practical Learning:

  • Engaging curriculum: Day-to-day life involves a fulfilling curriculum that includes lectures, dissections, animal handling, and lab practicals.
  • Clinical exposure: Students benefit from access to the RVC's extensive clinical facilities, gaining hands-on experience with a high volume and variety of cases.
  • Dedicated study time: Wednesday afternoons are kept free for sports and club activities, promoting a healthy work-life balance.
  • Excellent learning resources: The RVC boasts modern teaching facilities, well-equipped laboratories, and a library with an extensive collection, including rare veterinary books.

Social Activities and Extracurriculars:

  • Wide range of clubs and societies: Students can participate in numerous sports teams (competing at various levels, including internationally), academic societies, and social clubs catering to diverse interests.
  • Social events: Clubs and societies regularly organize "socials," providing opportunities for students to connect outside of academic activities.
  • Campus life: Both the Camden and Hawkshead campuses offer student union bars and spaces for socializing and relaxation.

Accommodation and Location:

  • Campus accommodation: The RVC provides modern student accommodation on both campuses, with options for en-suite rooms and communal living spaces.
  • London and Hertfordshire experiences: Studying at the RVC offers the unique advantage of experiencing life in both the vibrant city of London and the peaceful countryside of Hertfordshire. The Camden Campus provides easy access to central London's cultural attractions, while the Hawkshead Campus offers a more self-contained environment with close proximity to nature.
