Private London accommodation

The university guarantees first-year accommodation in Nottingham to new full-time undergraduate and postgraduate applicants, subject to its published conditions. The guarantee can involve NTU-owned halls, UPP-operated buildings or approved private residences. It excludes London and Mansfield learners, family housing, single-semester courses and applicants under 18 at the start of the tenancy.

This structure makes Nottingham Trent University student accommodation more varied than a conventional hall system. The name on the booking page should always be followed by the campus, provider and contract length.

Nottingham Trent Students’ Union has buildings at City and Clifton campuses. The City Campus union includes a gym, exercise studios, climbing wall, sports hall, shops, food outlets and event space. Clifton’s social venue, The Point, combines a café, pub and club beside the campus accommodation.

NTU currently promotes more than 130 societies and around 50 sports clubs. Groups cover academic subjects, culture, music, politics, faith, media and recreational interests.

The City Campus places Rock City, Rescue Rooms, Theatre Royal, Nottingham Playhouse and Victoria Centre nearby. Hockley adds independent cafés, bars, Broadway Cinema and Nottingham Contemporary.

Clifton provides its own campus social life and sport facilities. Uni 4 gives residents access to central Nottingham without requiring a taxi for every evening, and the late service supports travel back after nights out.

Brackenhurst has a much smaller campus community. The Brack Bar, Orangery café, library and residence form much of the weekday routine, while Southwell provides shops, pubs and local services a short bus trip away.

Goldsmith Street, Talbot Street and the City Campus Quarter

This compact part of central Nottingham gives City Campus its shortest morning route. Goldsmith Street passes the Newton and Arkwright buildings, Boots Library and the university tram stop. Talbot Street and Hampden Street contain several university and private residences.

Yugo Goldsmith Court currently appears around 0.07 miles from the university on the NTU property page. Study Inn Talbot Street follows at approximately 0.18 miles. Collegiate Nova, Hydrogen, Trinity Square, Stanley House and Bowman House all remain within roughly a quarter of a mile of the City Campus reference point.

A room here removes regular transport from a City Campus timetable. Victoria Centre, Rock City, Rescue Rooms, supermarkets and Students’ Union facilities also stay nearby.

The same address brings late-night noise, deliveries and event crowds. Bedrooms near the Students’ Union or major music venues deserve an evening viewing. NTU warns that selected Byron rooms may experience noise and vibration because of their position near the union building.

The strongest private student accommodation close to Nottingham Trent University City Campus normally falls within this quarter. Clifton learners should view it as city housing with a daily bus commute, not as campus-side accommodation.

Arboretum and Waverley Street

The Arboretum lies immediately north of City Campus. Many properties remain within a ten- to fifteen-minute walk of lectures, while the park provides welcome open space near a dense university district.

Housing includes converted terraces, private flats and managed student buildings. The neighbourhood often costs less than the newest Talbot Street studios without pushing the university beyond walking distance. Current area guidance identifies Arboretum as the closest established residential neighbourhood to NTU City Campus.

The Forest tram stop and several bus routes help with trips outside the centre. Streets near the park feel quieter than the main nightlife roads, though house quality varies considerably.

Check window frames, heating, damp, bedroom locks and the kitchen during a viewing. Period houses can provide larger bedrooms than purpose-built accommodation, but maintenance standards depend on the landlord.

Nottingham City Centre

Central Nottingham works particularly well for City Campus. Hockley, Lace Market, Old Market Square and the streets around Victoria Centre all keep university buildings within a walk or short tram trip.

Purpose-built residences dominate the current stock. Private en-suites and studios usually include utilities, Wi-Fi, security and communal facilities under one weekly payment.

The city centre also helps with part-time work, railway travel and evenings out. Everyday groceries may cost more when the nearest option is a small convenience shop, so check the route to a full-size supermarket.

A city-centre address does not help every NTU course equally. Clifton students still need Uni 4, and Brackenhurst students face a much longer bus journey.

Hockley and the Lace Market

Hockley and Lace Market lie east of the main shopping district. Converted industrial buildings, independent cafés, cinemas and restaurants give the area a different character from Talbot Street.

City Campus normally takes 10 to 20 minutes to reach on foot, depending on the building. Nottingham railway station also remains accessible.

The neighbourhood carries more evening activity than Arboretum. A bedroom above a bar or facing a busy road needs careful thought during assessment periods.

Hockley fits someone who wants city access and accepts a slightly longer university walk. A premium studio here should still be compared with an en-suite near Goldsmith Street before the location justifies the difference.

Radford

Radford lies west of City Campus and provides lower-cost halls, conventional flats and shared houses.

Norton Court occupies Wilton Road and gives the university an official estimated travel time of 20 minutes. Its en-suite rooms include a free travel pass, access to communal facilities and contracts of either 44 or 51 weeks.

The area has supermarkets, takeaways and local shops. It also connects with other student districts around Lenton and Hyson Green.

Street conditions change quickly, so view the exact route between the property and campus. A low rent should not override concerns about the building, street lighting or late-evening travel.

Hyson Green and Forest Fields

Hyson Green and Forest Fields lie north of the centre along the tram corridor. Rooms here often cost less than equivalent city-centre accommodation.

The tram gives direct access to the Nottingham Trent University stop. Noel Street and The Forest stops serve different parts of the neighbourhood, so the home-to-platform walk matters.

This area suits a budget built around a private house or room in a smaller flat. Utility bills may stay outside the rent, unlike many managed residences.

A property several minutes from the tram can still work. A house that also needs a bus before the tram usually loses much of its price advantage.

Lenton

Lenton has a large student population, but much of it serves the University of Nottingham rather than NTU. Simpsons provides a notable exception near the City Campus side of the neighbourhood.

Simpsons lies less than a mile from City Campus and offers en-suite bedrooms and shared twin studios. NTU lists a four-minute bus journey, though residents often walk in around 15 to 20 minutes.

Traditional houses around Lenton may appear inexpensive. Check the route carefully because accommodation near University Park can leave NTU City Campus farther away than the listing headline implies.

Lenton makes more sense for mixed friendship groups involving both Nottingham universities. City-only NTU households will usually find a shorter route in Arboretum, Radford or the centre.

Basford

Basford offers one of NTU’s lowest hall prices through The Maltings.

The residence lies around two miles from City Campus and takes approximately 30 minutes to reach by bus. NTU includes a free NCT travel pass with full 44- and 51-week bookings.

The distance provides a calmer residential setting and a much lower rent. It also makes a missed bus more disruptive than it would be from Radford or Arboretum.

Basford fits someone who prioritises contract cost and accepts a scheduled commute. It is a poor choice for a person who expects frequent late library sessions and dislikes waiting for transport.

Clifton Campus and Clifton

Clifton Campus has its own student village, teaching buildings, library, sports facilities, shops and Students’ Union venue. The university grounds lie four miles south of central Nottingham.

New Hall and Peverell place residents on campus. College Drive provides a lower-cost shared option for returning and postgraduate learners, with current availability beginning near £100.94 per week.

Private houses around Clifton reduce the separation between university and home, though most lack the all-inclusive structure of managed halls. Check the walk or bus route to the actual campus entrance.

City-centre accommodation remains possible. Uni 4 travels between the two campuses in about 30 minutes and operates as frequently as every ten minutes at peak teaching times. A night service continues until 4 am during term.

Practical student accommodation near Nottingham Trent University Clifton Campus usually means New Hall, Peverell, College Drive or a genuine Clifton address. A City Campus studio may offer better nightlife access, but it does not offer the shorter academic routine.

Wilford and the Southern Tram Corridor

Wilford lies between central Nottingham and Clifton. The tram serves the area, while local buses connect with the campus and city.

This location can provide a middle point for someone whose week involves both Clifton and the centre. It does not remove the final bus or walk to NTU’s campus buildings.

Check the full door-to-door journey before choosing a house because “near the tram” can mean a ten-minute walk at both ends.

Brackenhurst and Southwell

Brackenhurst lies approximately 14 miles from Nottingham city centre. Animal, rural, environmental and agricultural courses use this campus, so central Nottingham accommodation creates a substantial daily journey.

The university residence provides 491 en-suite rooms in flats of up to six. The campus shop, library, Orangery café and Brack Bar remain nearby, while Southwell takes around 15 minutes to reach by bus.

City accommodation works for someone who strongly values Nottingham nightlife and accepts a journey of about 45 minutes. A timetable with early practical sessions makes the on-campus hall far more appealing.

After paying rent, allow roughly £105 to £135 each week for day-to-day expenses in Nottingham. This should cover groceries, local travel, phone costs, bills and the occasional meal or night out. Cooking at home and walking to campus will keep spending near the lower figure. Takeaways, taxis and frequent social plans will take it higher.

The 2025 National Student Money Survey reported an average weekly spend of around £141 per student, excluding rent. Nottingham can cost less when students live near campus, cook regularly and use student travel passes.

Expense

Suggested weekly budget

What to consider

Groceries and food

Around £34

The UK student average for groceries stands at £146 per month. Cooking at home and planning meals can keep food costs under control.

Transport

£0 to £12

Students near Nottingham city centre or their main campus can walk for many daily journeys. Tram and bus costs will increase the budget for students travelling between campuses.

Household bills

Around £16

The national student average for household bills stands at £69 per month. Check the tenancy agreement before booking, as some student halls include gas, electricity, water and internet in the rent.

Social plans

Around £14

The 2025 student average for nights out stands at £61 per month. Nottingham has options for different budgets, but frequent nights out will raise this figure quickly.

Mobile phone

£3 to £5

SIM-only plans usually cost less than phone contracts. The national student average comes to £15 per month.

Course materials

Varies by subject

Most students need money for printing, books or software. Art, architecture, design and fashion courses often require a larger materials budget.

Accommodation has the greatest effect on the total. A room with bills included can remove several monthly payments from your budget. Location matters too. Students within walking distance of campus can spend very little on daily transport, while regular tram or bus travel needs a separate allowance.

International students also need to meet the financial requirement for a UK Student visa. The UK Government currently requires students studying outside London to show £1,171 for each month of their course, up to nine months. This equals a maximum maintenance amount of £10,539. The visa requirement confirms access to funds; it does not represent the amount every student will spend each month.

Shared-Bathroom Private Room

This format gives one resident a lockable bedroom. Flatmates share the bathroom, kitchen and social space.

The Maltings and Hampden provide university-arranged examples. Conventional houses in Arboretum, Radford, Hyson Green and Clifton use the same basic arrangement.

The room normally costs less than an en-suite. Count the showers and toilets before booking, because one bathroom between three residents creates a different routine from one shared by ten.

En-suite Room

An en-suite includes a private shower, toilet and washbasin. The kitchen stays communal.

Norton Court, Simpsons, Sandby, Byron, Gill Street, New Hall, Peverell and Brackenhurst all offer en-suite categories. Private buildings around Talbot Street also use this format.

A personal bathroom does not guarantee a quiet or spacious room. Check the bedroom measurements, kitchen group and building position separately.

Private Room in a Shared Apartment

A managed apartment gives every resident a private bedroom while keeping the kitchen and lounge communal. The bathroom may be private or shared.

This arrangement forms much of the private shared student accommodation near Nottingham Trent University. It provides more everyday contact with flatmates than a studio without requiring two people to share a bedroom.

Ask how many residents use the kitchen. Ten-person flats need more refrigerator shelves, cupboards and cooking equipment than a four-person household.

Shared Twin Room or Twin Studio

Two residents share the bedroom under this category.

Simpsons offers a twin studio from £137.62 per person. Gill Street North lists a twin studio from £150.43. Both give each occupant a lower rent than most private single rooms near City Campus.

The savings come with less control over sleep, calls, guests and study habits. Confirm that the weekly rate applies to each resident, not to the room as a whole.

Studio

A studio keeps the bathroom and kitchenette inside one self-contained unit.

Hydrogen, Bowman House and IconInc currently display studio entry prices between £165 and £225. University studios also appear at Gill Street North and New Hall.

Check the cooking equipment. A kitchenette may have a compact refrigerator, microwave and two hob rings but no conventional oven.

Studios offer privacy, though they also reduce the incidental conversations that happen in a shared kitchen.

Private House

A student house normally provides one bedroom per tenant and shared bathrooms, kitchen and lounge.

Much of the shared student accommodation near Nottingham Trent University appears in Arboretum, Radford, Hyson Green, Forest Fields and Clifton. House shares often cost less per person than central studios, but the rent may exclude utilities and internet.

Joint agreements can make every tenant responsible for the whole household payment. Read the liability clause before anyone signs.

Some listing systems use the phrase private shared student accommodation in Nottingham close to Nottingham Trent University for a private bedroom inside a communal property. The label does not confirm a private bathroom, a separate tenancy or proximity to your actual campus.

The best student accommodation near Nottingham Trent University depends on which part of the university you attend. The following properties make the strongest case for City Campus through their location, current room price, or room setup.

Trinity Square

Trinity Square currently has the lowest displayed private-room price among the closest City Campus properties, at £139 per week.

The building lies near Victoria Centre and approximately 0.21 miles from the university reference point. Current contracts include 40-, 44- and 51-week options, alongside selected shorter stays. Utility bills form part of the advertised payment.

A £139 room over 44 weeks costs £6,116 before optional extras. That total falls close to Norton Court but gives a much shorter university walk.

Yugo Goldsmith Court

Goldsmith Court has the shortest displayed City Campus distance, at roughly 0.07 miles.

Current private rooms begin at £162 per week, and the property lists several tenancy lengths. Bills form part of the rent.

The address removes nearly all travel from a City Campus timetable. Check the exact bedroom position because central roads and university activity can create noise.

Study Inn Talbot Street

Study Inn Talbot Street currently begins at £160 per week for a private room.

The residence lies approximately 0.18 miles from City Campus and includes managed facilities, a gym and housekeeping services among its advertised features. Contracts include 44 and 51 weeks, plus selected shorter periods.

The additional services carry value only when you expect to use them. Compare the annual payment with Goldsmith Court and Trinity Square before choosing the facilities.

Bowman House

Bowman House currently displays studios from £165 per week.

Its central address lies roughly 0.21 miles from City Campus. Contracts include 45 and 51 weeks, and bills form part of the advertised rent.

A £165 studio over 51 weeks costs £8,415. That amount remains lower than many university en-suite rooms at Gill Street but adds seven tenancy weeks.

Stanley House

Stanley House starts at £175 per week for a private room and lies about 0.21 miles from campus.

The current listing offers several contract lengths, including agreements shorter than a conventional academic year. Bills and building facilities form part of the accommodation package.

A shorter agreement could provide stronger value for an exchange or non-standard course. Confirm that the dates cover every teaching and examination period.

Collegiate Nova

Collegiate Nova currently begins at £177 per week.

Private rooms and several tenancy lengths appear on the live listing, including 39-, 44- and 51-week agreements. The building lies around 0.20 miles from City Campus.

The entry figure needs a live availability check. Properties often retain a “from” price after the cheapest room category has nearly filled.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen currently lists studio accommodation from £179 per week.

The property lies around 0.20 miles from NTU and includes contracts of 45 or 51 weeks alongside short stays. Utility bills form part of the advertised amount.

It deserves comparison with Bowman House because both offer self-contained rooms close to City Campus. Floor area, kitchen equipment and total contract rent should decide between them.

IconInc Nottingham City

IconInc occupies the higher private tier, with studios from £225 per week.

The property lies approximately 0.16 miles from campus and uses contracts of 43, 48 or 52 weeks on its current listing.

At £225 over 43 weeks, basic rent reaches £9,675. A 52-week agreement reaches £11,700. The premium needs to reflect facilities you will genuinely use.

The university-arranged list currently gives the clearest low-cost choices.

Norton Court offers a private bathroom for only about £1,096 more over the year. Its City Campus journey falls to around 20 minutes.

Trinity Square may create the strongest private balance when the £139 room remains available under a 44-week contract. It combines a private bedroom, bills and a central location at a total close to Norton Court.

City Campus residents often walk throughout the week. Clifton learners living centrally need a regular bus allowance. Brackenhurst residents in Nottingham face the largest transport commitment.

International Student visa applicants studying in Nottingham currently need to show £1,171 per month for up to nine months, unless an exemption applies. This amount supports the immigration application and does not represent average personal spending.

Walking to City Campus

Goldsmith Street, Talbot Street, Arboretum and most of the city centre place NTU within a realistic walk.

Nottingham railway station takes around 20 minutes to reach from City Campus. A tram reduces the journey and stops at the university’s own station.

Nottingham Tram

The Nottingham Trent University stop lies in the centre of City Campus.

Trams leave Nottingham station every seven to ten minutes under the current service information. The line also helps residents in Forest Fields, Hyson Green, Wilford and Clifton’s wider southern corridor.

NTU currently advertises a £300 student academic-year tram ticket for frequent travellers. Compare that payment with individual fares before buying it.

Uni 4 to Clifton Campus

Uni 4 provides the principal connection between City and Clifton campuses.

The weekday term-time service operates as frequently as every ten minutes at peak periods and normally completes the journey in around 30 minutes. Evening services become less frequent, and a night bus continues until 4 am.

The current student single costs £2.50, while a 24-hour ticket costs £4.50. Frequent travellers should compare those fares with the NTU academic-year pass.

Brackenhurst Bus

A regular service connects Nottingham, Southwell and Brackenhurst.

The city journey takes roughly 45 minutes under university guidance. Southwell lies much nearer, at about 15 minutes from campus.

A central Nottingham tenancy needs enough time for delays and the final walk to class. Early practical teaching strengthens the case for living on campus.

Cycling

Cycling works well for City Campus and several residential districts.

Arboretum, Radford, Hyson Green and the centre all give manageable bicycle routes. Clifton requires more confidence and a longer ride, while Brackenhurst lies too far from Nottingham for most daily cyclists.

Confirm secure storage at the accommodation. An exposed outdoor rack provides less protection than a locked room or controlled-access store.

Rail and Airport Travel

Nottingham station provides direct and connecting services towards London, Sheffield, Leicester, Birmingham and other UK cities. NTU gives current indicative journey times of about 100 minutes to London, 51 minutes to Sheffield and 103 minutes to Leeds.

East Midlands Airport has bus connections from Nottingham. Early departures require a separate timetable check because overnight frequencies differ from daytime travel.
