Student Accommodation near New College Durham

New College Durham began in 1978 after Durham Technical College and Durham Centre for Education merged.

The college operates as a public further and higher education institution in North East England.

Its courses cover several academic and practical routes, including A-Levels, vocational diplomas and apprenticeships. Students can also take higher education qualifications such as HNCs, HNDs and foundation degrees that partner universities validate.

New College Durham teaches from one main campus at Framwellgate Moor, Durham DH1 5ES.

The college serves a large regional student community and attracts many learners from County Durham and surrounding areas.

New College Durham and Durham University are separate institutions. Durham University is the larger Russell Group university in the city, while New College Durham focuses heavily on vocational, technical and practical education.

Durham itself has a strong historical identity. Durham Cathedral and Castle form a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remain two of the city’s most recognisable landmarks

Student life at New College Durham combines activities on the Framwellgate Moor campus with everything available in Durham city centre.

Students’ Union

New College Durham Students’ Union supports the college community through events, societies and student welfare.

It gives students another way to meet people outside classes and take part in campus activities.

Sport

The Framwellgate Moor campus has college sports facilities.

Students can use these for physical activity and team sports.

The available options cater to both casual participation and more competitive interests.

Nightlife and Socialising

Framwellgate Moor has a mainly residential character.

Durham city centre provides the larger choice of pubs, bars and places to eat.

Students can reach the centre by bus from the college area.

The compact size of Durham also makes it relatively easy to combine college life with social plans in the city.

Shopping

Most of Durham’s main shopping options concentrate around the city centre.

Students can find high-street shops, independent businesses and markets for everyday purchases.

The centre also provides supermarkets and other essential services.

Culture and Places to Visit

Durham Cathedral and Castle dominate the city’s historic centre and together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The River Wear provides quieter riverside walks around the city.

Durham also hosts events and festivals throughout the year.

Students can therefore spend time in the city without relying entirely on pubs, restaurants or paid entertainment.

Healthcare

Many New College Durham students commute from home and remain registered with a GP near their permanent address.

Students who move to Durham can register with an NHS GP near their term-time home.

Durham generally has a reputation as a safe UK student city

Most students at New College Durham do not move into a traditional university residential area.

Many live elsewhere in County Durham and commute to Framwellgate Moor each day. Students taking higher education courses sometimes prefer to rent privately in Durham.

The college does not own dedicated halls, so anyone moving away from home needs to arrange accommodation independently.

Durham City Centre

Durham city centre provides one of the more practical choices for students who want to live independently.

The centre gives residents access to supermarkets, shops, cafés, restaurants and public transport.

Regular buses connect the city with Framwellgate Moor, which makes the area workable for daily classes.

The city centre also gives students easy access to Durham railway station and the city’s main social and cultural areas.

Private rents can cost more in the historic centre than in residential districts farther out, so students should compare the additional convenience against the weekly price.

Residential Areas Around Durham

Residential districts outside the immediate centre can also work for New College Durham students.

The most useful property will have a reliable bus connection to Framwellgate Moor.

A cheaper room loses some of its appeal if the route requires several changes or creates a long journey every morning.

Local shops also matter. A property with a supermarket and bus stop nearby can make everyday life much more manageable than an isolated room with a slightly lower rent.

There are no specific neighbourhood or property price figures tied directly to New College Durham in the available accommodation information, so students should check individual Durham rental listings and calculate the route to DH1 5ES before committing.

New College Durham’s commuter profile means private housing choices spread throughout Durham rather than concentrating in one recognised college district

Students living in Durham can expect to spend around £90 to £130 per week outside rent.

Durham generally costs less than several larger UK student cities, although housing in the historic centre can carry higher prices.

Groceries and Food

A weekly grocery budget of £25 to £40 gives students a useful starting point.

This amount falls around or below the typical UK student average.

Cooking regularly can help keep spending towards the lower end.

Transport

Students who live in Durham and travel to Framwellgate Moor by bus can expect to spend around £12 to £18 per week.

The final amount depends on the route and ticket type.

Students living close enough to walk or cycle can reduce this expense.

Household Bills

Private tenants normally need to check electricity, gas, water and internet separately.

Some rental agreements may include certain utilities, while others leave every household bill to the tenants.

Full-time students usually qualify for council tax exemption, but students should check their individual circumstances and tenancy arrangements.

Socialising

A casual meal in Durham generally costs around £8 to £15.

The city centre has pubs, cafés and restaurants at different price points.

Students who live farther from the centre should also account for transport when planning evenings out.

Mobile Phone

A typical SIM-only mobile plan costs approximately £3 to £5 per week.

Course Costs

New College Durham teaches many vocational and apprenticeship programmes.

Some courses require tools, uniforms or specialist materials.

These costs vary between programmes, so students should check their course requirements before fixing their monthly budget.

International Student Maintenance Requirement

International students who require a Student visa also need to meet the government’s maintenance requirement.

From 11 November 2025, students studying outside London need £1,171 per month, approximately £270 per week, for a maximum of nine months.

The government uses this figure for visa financial evidence rather than as an estimate of normal weekly spending in Durham

Students comparing New College Durham housing will mainly find options through Durham’s private rental market.

New College Durham does not provide its own halls, so room availability depends on individual landlords, letting agents and private accommodation providers.

There are no confirmed NCD-specific price bands for these room types, but students will generally come across private rooms, shared bedrooms and studios.

Private Rooms

A private room gives one student an individual bedroom inside a shared house or flat.

Housemates normally share the kitchen, living area and bathroom.

This arrangement can cost less than renting a complete studio.

It also gives students regular contact with housemates while retaining a private space for sleeping and studying.

Residents often divide household bills between them, although the tenancy agreement determines how payments work.

Shared Rooms

A shared room requires two or more people to use the same bedroom.

This type of accommodation appears less frequently in the UK private student rental market.

The lower cost provides the main benefit.

Students give up considerably more privacy, so the arrangement works best for people who feel comfortable sharing their sleeping and storage space.

Studio Flats

A studio gives one resident a private living space with a bedroom area, kitchen and separate bathroom.

Students do not share their main facilities with housemates.

The extra privacy usually makes studios more expensive than bedrooms in a shared house.

They can work well for students who prefer a quiet home or want complete control over their daily routine.

Room prices around Durham change according to location, size and property facilities, so students should compare individual listings before deciding which format offers the best value

New College Durham does not operate dedicated student halls, and there are currently no specific House of Student properties directly associated with the college.

That makes the idea of the “best” accommodation slightly different here than it would at a large residential university.

A practical property should combine three things:

• A manageable journey to Framwellgate Moor
• A weekly rent that fits the student’s budget
• Everyday facilities such as shops and transport nearby

Private accommodation in Durham city can give students access to modern rooms and local amenities while keeping bus connections to campus within reach.

Students should use New College Durham’s Framwellgate Moor postcode, DH1 5ES, when checking travel times.

A property marketed generally towards Durham students may focus more heavily on access to Durham University, so the actual route to New College Durham deserves a separate check.

House of Student has Durham properties, but none of the current listings in this article has verified New College Durham-specific distance, price or commute information

A lower housing budget gives New College Durham students several possible approaches.

Many learners save the most money by remaining at home in County Durham and commuting.

Students who need to move can usually reduce rent by sharing a house or flat.

Private rooms in shared accommodation often cost less than studios because several residents divide the kitchen, bathroom and other communal facilities.

Living outside Durham’s historic centre can also reduce rent in some cases.

The trade-off comes through travel.

A room farther away only makes sense when a reliable bus route connects it with Framwellgate Moor.

There are no verified affordable-property listings specifically tied to New College Durham in this article, so it would be misleading to rank individual buildings or quote unsupported room prices.

Students should compare Durham private rentals by total weekly cost, not rent alone.

Transport and separate household bills can quickly change which property actually costs less over a month

New College Durham teaches from its Framwellgate Moor campus, and local buses provide the main connection with Durham city centre.

Local Buses

Regular bus services travel between Durham city centre and Framwellgate Moor.

The journey generally takes around 10 to 15 minutes.

Students living elsewhere in Durham can connect through these services depending on their address.

A reliable bus route can therefore matter more than the straight-line distance between a property and campus.

Cycling

Students can cycle to college from some parts of Durham.

The city’s hills make certain routes demanding, so the journey may feel harder than the mileage suggests.

Local cycle routes remain available, and improvements to cycling infrastructure continue to make short journeys more practical.

Durham Railway Station

Durham railway station provides national rail connections from the city.

LNER, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express serve the station.

Students can reach the station from the Framwellgate Moor campus by local transport or car.

The short Newcastle journey gives students access to a much larger city for shopping, events or travel connections.

Newcastle International Airport

Newcastle International Airport provides the main airport option for students in Durham.

A car journey generally takes around 30 to 40 minutes.

Students can also combine rail and local transport to reach the airport.

The airport serves domestic and international routes, which can help students travelling home during college breaks
