About this property
Abbeygate Apartments sits on Victoria Road, close to some of the places students end up visiting most during their time in Chester. The University of Chester campus is nearby, the railway station is within walking distance, and the city centre sits only a few minutes away.
That location changes how a typical week feels. Picking up groceries after lectures, meeting friends in town, catching a train home for the weekend, or grabbing a coffee before class rarely turns into a lengthy trip.
Students researching Abbeygate Chester usually compare it with several properties around the city before making a decision. A mix of en-suite rooms and studio accommodation gives residents different ways to live, depending on whether they enjoy sharing a kitchen with others or prefer having their own space.
Abbeygate Fresh Student Living Chester attracts a wide mix of students each year, including first-years arriving in the city for the first time and returning students who already know the areas they want to live in.
Address: Victoria Road, Chester, CH2 2AX, United Kingdom
Ask students why they chose a particular accommodation and location usually comes up quite quickly.
Nobody wants a simple trip to the supermarket to feel like an expedition. Nobody wants to spend large chunks of the week travelling between lectures, shops, train stations, and the places where they actually spend time with friends.
Abbeygate Apartments sits in a part of Chester where most things feel close enough to reach without much planning.
The University of Chester is nearby. Chester Railway Station can be reached on foot. The city centre, shops, restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, and other everyday essentials are all part of the surrounding area.
After a while, those short distances become something students stop thinking about altogether. They simply become part of the routine.
Students don't all look for the same thing when comparing accommodation.
Some want their own studio. Some enjoy having flatmates around. Some care about staying close to campus. Others pay more attention to budget.
Abbeygate Apartments appeals to students who value:
A location close to both the university and Chester city centre.
The choice between en-suite accommodation and private studio rooms.
Utility bills and internet already included within the rent.
Study spaces available inside the building.
Gym facilities on-site.
Shared spaces where residents can spend time outside their rooms.
Bike storage for students who cycle around Chester.
Support staff and maintenance teams available when needed.
No accommodation suits every student. What works for one person might not matter much to another.
For students who want university buildings, city-centre amenities, and transport connections within easy reach, Abbeygate Apartments continues to attract attention year after year.
Students spend their time differently outside lectures. Some enjoy cooking with flatmates and having people around, while others prefer a quieter space where they can study and relax on their own.
Abbeygate Apartments includes both en-suite rooms and self-contained studios, giving students a choice between shared and private living.

Many students living at Abbeygate Apartments walk regularly because both the city centre and university buildings are close by. For journeys further across Chester or outside the city, several transport options are available.

As a first-year university student living away from home for the first time, I found this accommodation to be a disappointing experience overall. One of the biggest drawbacks is the lack of opportunities to socialise. There are no communal spaces where residents can meet, and there is very little sense of community among tenants. In comparison, many of my friends living in university-managed accommodation have been able to build strong friendships and enjoy a much more social environment. At the beginning of the academic year, management was responsive and effective, and there were few noticeable issues. However, since April, the property has been left without on-site management, which has resulted in ongoing problems with parcel handling, maintenance requests, and general communication. There are also significant concerns regarding safety and maintenance. The main gate has reportedly been broken for around a year, with no apparent progress towards repairing it. This is particularly concerning given recent reports of homeless individuals accessing and staying in the car park area. In addition, there have been repeated issues with the water supply. A few weeks ago, residents experienced a full-day water outage, and since then some tenants have continued to report problems, including a lack of hot water for extended periods. Overall, I am very relieved to be leaving. While the accommodation may suit some residents, I would strongly encourage prospective first-year students to consider university-managed accommodation if they are looking for a more supportive, social, and well-maintained living environment.

One of the worst student accommodations in Chester. Starting with the positives, I had a smooth and easy check in/move in process with the original management team, arriving in a surprisingly clean and modern room however ever since then everything has seemed to gradually decline. The first problem being the parking situation, after a £375 fee and it being marketed on their own website as ‘secure’, the gates are never closed left open for anyone to walk in and nose around with reports of homeless on site. For anyone who is about to pay this fee - don’t - might pay to get in touch with Brio across the road and see how much they charge for term time. The problems start in kitchens with hobs/ovens not working. It continues inside rooms with missing fire proof strip inside doors, screws poking through wardrobes and broken under bed storage doors (reported but never fixed). The most annoying issues lie in water problems, nearly a whole day without water a few weeks ago and still problems with hot water to this day. And somehow we are expected to pay so much to live in this place. Parcels is another issue, with no management regularly in the office anymore parcels are going missing or being misdelivered. Washing machines have been in and out of service for most of the year, while also being very expensive, making it hard to have a regular washing schedule. On top of this, there was an incident where the front door to the accommodation broke with reports of people who didn’t live here wandering around corridors. While security was provided afterwards, it still puts into question the safety of residents. Even though Abbeygate is one of the cheapest accommodation in Chester and provides decent value for money especially for en-suite rooms, the lack of management after the start of the year and funding into the buildings largely lets Abbeygate down. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to live here.

Terrible accommodation, Lucy Cross does absolutely noticing to address the broken front gate (shouldn't be advertised as a gated property) vehicles therefore aren't safe. There is rarely a front manager as Lucy Cross makes them not want to work any more. £50 for a room lockout, and your room locks automatically so good luck if you go to your kitchen and leave your key in your room!

Service and cost conflict the stay for students. List starts from Issues with unannounced fire alarm checks, water problems(hot water), non functional gates, no study space, no social space, concerns of no security at times, no manger for some term now, no entertainment space, courier collection at weekends is a joke, laundry machines takes a spin, Simple paper work takes time to get addressed, everything needs to be complied over a mail and hope it will get resolved or answered. My dual occupancy is rounding about 1k pounds pcm including interest.

Staying at Abbeygate Accommodation in Chester has honestly been such a comforting experience. From the moment I moved in, it felt warm, safe, and welcoming — just like a second home. The rooms are well-maintained, the environment is peaceful, and everything you need is easily accessible.
