Victoria University Accommodation

Victoria University traces its roots back to the Footscray Technical School in 1916, and it has come a long way since then. It is now Victoria's designated dual-sector university, which means it offers both higher education degrees and TAFE vocational education under the same roof. That flexibility in pathways is something that sets it apart from most other universities in Melbourne.

Total enrolments hit 49,106 in 2024, the highest the university has seen in over a decade. A big part of that growth comes down to the VU Block Model, where students study one subject at a time in intensive four-week blocks rather than juggling several units simultaneously. Pass rates and student satisfaction have both improved since it was introduced, and it has attracted a lot of attention from other institutions looking at how university teaching can work differently.

The main campus is the Footscray Park Campus at 70 to 104 Ballarat Road, Footscray. VU also runs campuses at Footscray Nicholson, St Albans, the City Campus on Flinders Street in the CBD, Werribee, Sunshine, and VU Sydney. Notable areas of study include the College of Law and Justice, College of Health and Biomedicine, College of Sport and Exercise Science, and College of Engineering and Science. Globally, VU sits in the 741 to 750 band in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and in the 501 to 600 band in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026.

Quick Facts about Victoria University

VU has more going on than people sometimes expect, and Footscray as a suburb is genuinely interesting to live in.

Student Union and Societies

• The Victoria University Student Union represents students across all campuses and organises clubs and societies, welfare support, and events throughout the year including O-Week and market days.

• Groups like the VU African Students' Association, VU Vietnamese Students' Association, and VU Business Society give students a community to connect with from early on.

Sports and Fitness

• VU Sport and Fitness runs gym and fitness facilities at Footscray Park campus.

• The university has a well-known connection to elite sport, including a partnership with the Western Bulldogs AFL club, and offers distinctive study pathways for elite athletes.

• There is also a club sport program for students who want to get involved at any level.

Nightlife and Social Scene

• Footscray's Little Saigon precinct is a short walk from campus and is one of the best things about living in the area.

• Affordable Vietnamese food, vibrant markets, and a genuinely lively atmosphere that does not cost much to enjoy.

• Yarraville's village strip is a short train ride away and has a different, more relaxed energy with cafes and local bars suited to a quieter evening out.

• When you want a bigger night, the CBD is ten to twelve minutes from Footscray station and has everything from rooftop bars to live music venues to underground club nights.

Shopping and Markets

• Footscray Market, just a short walk from campus, is one of the best places in student accommodation in Melbourne to do your weekly grocery shop on a student budget.

• Fresh produce, meats, and international groceries at prices that make a real difference over the course of a semester. The CBD offers full shopping districts for everything else.

Culture and Events

• The Footscray Community Arts Centre is a short walk from campus and hosts exhibitions, workshops, and performances regularly.

• The Substation in Newport is another contemporary arts venue worth knowing about. VUSU also runs its own events calendar to keep students engaged with campus life throughout the year.

Healthcare

• International students are required to hold Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of their visa.

• Most Australian universities provide on-campus health services or can direct students to local medical centres, and VU is no different.

VU is predominantly a commuter university, so most students live in the western suburbs or travel in from other parts of Melbourne. That said, the inner west has a lot going for it, and the suburbs closest to Footscray Park campus are genuinely good places to live.

Footscray (VIC 3011)

• Footscray is the obvious starting point. The campus is between zero and 1.5 kilometres away, which means most students can walk in 5 to 20 minutes without needing to think about public transport at all.

• The suburb is vibrant and multicultural, and the Little Saigon market precinct is one of the best things about living here.

• You can eat well and cheaply, the atmosphere is lively, and the CBD is a quick train ride away.

• If you want to be close to campus, keep costs down, and actually enjoy where you live, Footscray is hard to beat.

Seddon (VIC 3011)

• Seddon sits right next to Footscray and has a noticeably calmer feel.

• It is a slightly more village-like suburb with cafe-lined streets and its own train station, which makes the commute to campus straightforward at around 15 to 20 minutes on foot or a short train ride.

• Students who want easy access to campus but prefer a quieter residential atmosphere tend to end up here.

Yarraville (VIC 3013)

• Yarraville is about three kilometres from campus, so you will need a short train ride, but it is a suburb people tend to stay in once they move there.

• The heritage Sun Theatre, leafy streets, and the village centre around Anderson Street with its cafes and boutiques give it a strong community feel that is different from the grittier energy of Footscray.

• It is a slightly more premium option but popular with students who want a genuine neighbourhood rather than just a convenient location.

West Footscray and Kingsville (VIC 3012)

• These residential pockets border Footscray and are about 3 kilometres from campus, accessible by train or bus.

• The main draw is space and value. You tend to get more for your money here than in Footscray itself.

• The Maribyrnong River trails are nearby for anyone who wants to run or cycle without navigating traffic.

• Good for students who want affordability and a bit more breathing room.

Melbourne CBD and Docklands

• The CBD is about six kilometres from Footscray Park, which sounds significant until you realise the train from Footscray station gets you there in ten to twelve minutes.

• VU also has its City Campus on Flinders Street, so students attending courses there will find CBD living genuinely convenient rather than just aspirational.

• High-rise apartments, endless food and entertainment options, and every transport connection you could need. It costs more, but for students who want to be in the middle of everything, it works.

Victoria University Accommodation 2026/27: Best Nearby Areas/Suburbs

Victoria University Student Accommodation - Best Areas/Suburbs for Every Budget

If budget is the main priority, Footscray and Kingsville in the inner west are the most affordable options with solid transport links to both campus and the CBD. If you have a bit more to spend and want a suburb with character, Yarraville is worth looking at seriously.

Melbourne is not a cheap city, but living in the Footscray area gives you more breathing room than you would have in Carlton or the CBD. Outside of rent, most students spend somewhere between AU$340 and AU$500 per week on living costs. Where you land in that range depends mostly on how often you cook versus eat out, and how active your social life is.

Groceries and Food: AU$110 to AU$160 per week

This assumes you are cooking at home regularly. VU students have a genuine advantage here because Footscray's Little Saigon market precinct offers some of the most affordable fresh produce and groceries in Melbourne. If you are shopping there rather than at a supermarket chain, you can keep food costs noticeably lower than the top end of this estimate.

Transport: AU$45 to AU$55 per week

This is based on a five-day commuter using Melbourne's myki system, which runs on two-hour fares and daily caps. If you are living in Footscray and walking to campus most days, you will spend significantly less than this. The direct train line from Footscray station to the CBD makes transport costs predictable for students living further out.

Household Bills: AU$45 to AU$65 per week

This covers your share of electricity, gas, and internet in a shared house. If you are in purpose-built student accommodation, bills are typically bundled into your rent and you will not have to manage them separately.

Socialising: AU$65 to AU$110 per week

Melbourne has a lot going on, and Footscray itself has plenty of affordable dining and social options that mean you do not always have to head into the CBD to have a good time. That said, this is the category that is easiest to overspend on without noticing.

Mobile: AU$15 to AU$25 per week

That is roughly AU$65 to AU$100 per month for a standard Australian prepaid or SIM-only plan.

Course Costs: AU$10 to AU$20 per week

An average estimate for textbooks and materials. It will vary depending on what you are studying.

Victoria University Accommodation 2026/27 - Weekly Living Costs at a Glance

A note for international students

The Australian Government's Department of Home Affairs requires international Student visa applicants to demonstrate financial capacity of AU$29,710 per year, which works out to approximately AU$571 per week. This is a visa eligibility benchmark that covers all living costs including accommodation, not a reflection of what students actually spend week to week. Always check the official Home Affairs website for the most current figures before you apply.

The right room type depends on your budget, how much privacy matters to you, and what kind of living situation you actually want to come home to every day.

Studio Flat

A studio gives you everything in one self-contained space: sleeping area, living area, kitchenette, and private bathroom. You share nothing and answer to nobody about the washing up. It is the most expensive option and tends to suit postgraduate students or anyone who has lived independently before and knows that is how they work best.

Private Room in a Shared Flat

• This is the most common setup and usually the most sensible balance for most students.

• You get your own bedroom and study space, and you share the kitchen, living room, and sometimes bathrooms with housemates.

• It is more affordable than a studio, and living with other people is something a lot of first-year students actively want rather than just tolerate.

Shared Room

• Sharing a bedroom is the most affordable option available.

• It requires good communication and willingness to compromise, and it is not for everyone.

• But for students who are primarily focused on keeping costs down and do not mind the company, it is a practical choice.

Entire Place

• Renting a whole apartment or house works best when you are moving in with a group of friends you already know.

• Split several ways, it can actually be cost-effective, and you get the most control over your living environment.

• For a single student renting alone, it is expensive. For a group of four or five, it can make real sense.

Purpose-built student accommodation near VU typically offers a mix of these room types alongside shared facilities like gyms, study areas, and communal lounges, which is useful if you are arriving without an existing social group.

VU offers an accommodation guarantee for all full-time students through its partnership with UniLodge, primarily at UniLodge Victoria University, which is worth knowing about early in your planning.

• UniLodge Victoria University at 101 Ballarat Road, Footscray, starts from AU$249 per week. As VU's official accommodation partner, it is the first place most students should look. The guarantee for eligible students takes a lot of uncertainty out of the process, and it is specifically designed around the VU student community.

• Student Living on Flinders at 238 Flinders Street in the CBD starts from AU$485 per week. It is right in the city centre, a short walk to Flinders Street Station, and from there a direct train gets you to Footscray in ten to twelve minutes. It is on the expensive side, but the location is genuinely excellent.

• The Switch Melbourne Victoria Market at 192 to 204 A'Beckett Street in the CBD starts from AU$449 per week. Modern facilities, a lively student community, and Queen Victoria Market around the corner for affordable groceries. Well connected to public transport for the Footscray commute.

• Scape Swanston at 5 Little La Trobe Street in the CBD starts from AU$389 per week. A popular choice with a good range of room types and solid communal facilities, with good transport access for getting to Footscray Park campus.

• Scape Melbourne Central at 316 La Trobe Street starts from AU$299 per week and sits directly above Melbourne Central Station, giving you one of the most straightforward commutes to Footscray available from the CBD. For a central Melbourne location, that price point is competitive.

If keeping costs down is the priority and you are happy to factor in a longer commute, there are several options worth considering.

• UniLodge Victoria University at AU$249 per week remains the standout affordable option, particularly given the accommodation guarantee and the fact that it is purpose-built specifically for VU students.

• Greenwood House in Burwood at 2/15 Greenwood Street starts from AU$220 per week, which is among the lowest prices available in Melbourne's student accommodation market. It is 18 kilometres from the CBD with a transit time of around 45 minutes to Footscray Park, so the commute is real, but for students who are on campus only a few days a week, the savings are significant.

• Campus Melbourne in Preston at 205 Bell Street starts from AU$266 per week. It is about 17 kilometres from the CBD with a transit time of roughly 38 minutes. Preston has its own character and good public transport connections, though the commute to Footscray will require some planning.

• Scape Melbourne Central at AU$299 per week is worth mentioning again here because for a CBD property with direct train access to Footscray, it represents genuinely good value, especially for shared room types.

• UniLodge Carlton at 609 Swanston Street in Carlton starts from AU$349 per week, about 14 minutes from the CBD by transit. Carlton's student infrastructure and amenities are excellent, and the commute to Footscray Park from here is manageable.

Always factor in transport costs and daily travel time when comparing options. A lower weekly rent that comes with a longer commute can end up costing you more in both money and time than it first appears.

Getting around from student accommodation in Melbourne is straightforward once you understand how the city's public transport network works. Everything runs under Public Transport Victoria and uses the myki smartcard system.

Train

• Footscray railway station is the main transport hub for the area, about ten minutes from the Melbourne CBD by train.

• The station is served by the Sunbury and Werribee and Williamstown lines, giving direct access to the CBD and various western suburbs. From Footscray station, a free VU shuttle bus connects directly to the Footscray Park campus, or it is about a fifteen-minute walk.

• Students living in Footscray itself can walk to campus in five to twenty minutes and will rarely need to use public transport for the daily commute.

• Seddon is fifteen to twenty minutes on foot or a short train ride. Yarraville and West Footscray are both around three kilometres away, served by a short train or bus to Footscray station.

• From the CBD, a direct train from Flinders Street or Southern Cross takes ten to twelve minutes to Footscray station.

Buses and Trams

• Local bus routes connect various parts of Footscray and the surrounding suburbs to campus and Footscray station.

• Trams are more prevalent in the inner city and inner suburbs and can be useful for connecting to train lines if you are living further out.

Cycling

• Melbourne has a well-developed inner-city bike lane network, and cycling is a practical and popular option for students in Footscray and the immediately surrounding suburbs.

• VU provides bike racks and secure storage at campus.

Getting to the Airport

• Southern Cross Station in the CBD is the main hub for V/Line regional train services and interstate connections, easily reachable from Footscray station by a short Metro Trains journey.

• For Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, SkyBus runs frequent coach services between the airport and Southern Cross Station. From there, a direct train to Footscray takes ten to twelve minutes. Plan for roughly thirty to forty-five minutes total travel time from the inner west to the airport.

• Always check the PTV website at ptv.vic.gov.au for current fares and journey planning before you travel.
