Best Areas for Student Housing in Canberra

Acton:

  • Proximity to Universities: Acton is home to the main campus of The Australian National University (ANU). This makes it exceptionally convenient for ANU students, with many living within walking or cycling distance.
  • Public Transport: Acton has excellent public transport links, including the light rail (connecting to the city and Gungahlin), and numerous bus routes that connect to other parts of Canberra.
  • Affordability: While Acton itself can be relatively expensive due to its central location and proximity to ANU, there are often shared housing options available that can make it more affordable for students. Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) is also present. Expect weekly rent for a shared room to range from AUD 250 to AUD 450+.

Bruce:

  • Proximity to Universities: Bruce is home to the University of Canberra (UC). It offers very convenient access for UC students, often within walking or a short bus ride. It's also relatively accessible to ANU via public transport.
  • Public Transport: Bruce has good bus connections to the city, Belconnen town centre, and other parts of Canberra. The Canberra Metro light rail also has a station in nearby Gungahlin, providing another transport option.
  • Affordability: Bruce generally offers a range of housing options, including shared houses and apartments, which can be more affordable than inner-city areas. PBSA is also available near UC. Expect weekly rent for a shared room to range from AUD 220 to AUD 400+.

Belconnen:

  • Proximity to Universities: Belconnen is a major town centre with good public transport connections to both ANU and UC. It's a short bus ride to UC and a slightly longer but direct bus or light rail journey to ANU.
  • Public Transport: Belconnen has a major bus interchange with frequent services to all parts of Canberra. The Canberra Metro light rail also terminates in Gungahlin, easily accessible from Belconnen by bus.
  • Affordability: Belconnen offers a wider range of housing options, including more affordable apartments and shared houses compared to areas immediately surrounding the universities. Expect weekly rent for a shared room to range from AUD 200 to AUD 380+.

Civic (City Centre):

  • Proximity to Universities: Civic is centrally located with excellent public transport links to both ANU and UC. It's a short light rail or bus ride to ANU and a direct bus to UC.
  • Public Transport: Civic is the main transport hub in Canberra, with the City Interchange providing extensive bus and light rail connections.
  • Affordability: Accommodation in the city centre can be more expensive, especially for individual apartments. However, shared apartments can make it more manageable. Expect weekly rent for a shared room to range from AUD 280 to AUD 500+.

O'Connor & Turner:

  • Proximity to Universities: These inner-north suburbs are located close to ANU, often within cycling or a short bus ride.
  • Public Transport: Both suburbs have good bus connections to the city and ANU. The light rail is also easily accessible from Turner.
  • Affordability: These are established and desirable suburbs, so rent can be slightly higher than in outer areas. However, shared houses are common and can offer more affordable options. Expect weekly rent for a shared room to range from AUD 250 to AUD 420+.

Gungahlin:

  • Proximity to Universities: Gungahlin is further north but is well-connected to both ANU and UC via the Canberra Metro light rail and bus services. The journey to ANU is direct via light rail, and UC is accessible by bus with a transfer.
  • Public Transport: Gungahlin is the northern terminus of the light rail and has a major bus interchange.
  • Affordability: Gungahlin offers newer housing options, including apartments and townhouses, which can be relatively affordable, especially when shared. Expect weekly rent for a shared room to range from AUD 200 to AUD 380+.
