About this property
A student room isn't just where you sleep. It gradually becomes the place where assignments get finished the night before deadlines, dinners turn into long conversations with flatmates, and weekends begin before anyone has actually decided on a plan. Choosing accommodation is really about choosing the place where most of university life happens outside the classroom.
That is what makes Shrubhill House, Edinburgh, appealing. The residence is close to Edinburgh's city centre, but it avoids the busiest streets, making daily life easier for students. Public transport, supermarkets, cafés and university campuses are all within comfortable reach, allowing you to spend less time commuting and more time making the most of student life.
Whether you are searching for student accommodation at Shrubhill House as a first-year undergraduate, an international student or someone returning for postgraduate study, the property combines practical facilities with a location that works throughout the academic year rather than only on moving day.
No two students want exactly the same type of accommodation. Some prefer complete privacy, while others enjoy sharing a kitchen because it's often where friendships begin. Shrubhill House student halls recognise this difference by offering accommodation that suits both styles of living.
The studios are designed for students who like having everything within their space. The kitchen, bathroom, study area and bedroom all come together in one self-contained apartment, making it particularly popular with postgraduate and mature students.
The en-suite rooms follow a different approach. You still have your bedroom and private bathroom, but you share the kitchen and lounge with a small group of flatmates. For many students, this option provides the right balance between independence and community.
Beyond the rooms themselves, student residence Shrubhill House focuses on making everyday living straightforward. Laundry facilities, bike storage, maintenance support and high-speed Wi-Fi are already available on-site, so there is very little organising required after you move in. That simplicity becomes increasingly valuable once lectures, coursework and part-time jobs begin competing for your time.
The building is also supported by on-site management, maintenance staff and round-the-clock assistance, while CCTV, controlled entry and modern fire safety systems help create a secure place to live all year round.
Address: 8 Middlefield, Edinburgh EH7 4QW, United Kingdom
One of the advantages of student living at Shrubhill House is that the neighbourhood feels genuinely lived in, rather than being built purely for tourism.
Broughton Street sits nearby with independent cafés, bakeries, restaurants and local shops that students quickly get to know. It's the sort of area where you can grab breakfast before an early lecture, stop for groceries on the way home or spend an afternoon working from a café without travelling far.
Transport is another reason many students choose this part of Edinburgh. McDonald Road Tram Stop is only a short walk from the residence, giving quick access across the city, while buses run regularly throughout the day. Edinburgh Waverley Station is also conveniently close for students travelling home during the holidays or exploring other parts of Scotland at the weekend.
When coursework begins to pile up, Edinburgh Central Library offers a quieter study environment away from campus. On days when you simply need a break from your room, Royal Terrace Gardens provides open green space within walking distance. St James Quarter is equally close for shopping, restaurants and entertainment, so you can run most daily errands without travelling across the city.
These practical advantages often distinguish accommodation that looks appealing online from accommodation that genuinely meets your needs when university life gets busy.
There are plenty of student properties across Edinburgh, but many students keep returning to Shrubhill House because it offers the basics exceptionally well instead of relying on gimmicks.
Reasons students regularly consider halls Shrubhill House include:
Choice of studios and en-suite rooms.
Excellent access to Edinburgh's tram and bus network.
Fully furnished accommodation.

Secure bicycle storage.
Laundry facilities on-site.
Twenty-four-hour staff support.
On-site maintenance and management.
CCTV and secure door entry.

Students comparing different halls of residence at Shrubhill House often mention the balance between location, practical facilities and room choice as one of the property's strongest advantages.

Students who enjoy complete independence generally choose one of the studios. Every studio combines a bedroom, kitchen, study space and private bathroom into a self-contained apartment, allowing residents to manage their routine without sharing facilities.
Larger studio categories provide additional floor space, while accessible studios have been designed to support students with different mobility requirements.
En-suite rooms provide a different style of student living. Residents have a private bedroom and bathroom while sharing the kitchen and communal areas with a small number of flatmates.
Many first-year students appreciate this arrangement, as it naturally creates opportunities to socialise without sacrificing their privacy when studying.
One of the biggest advantages of choosing student accommodation at Shrubhill House is knowing that the main household bills have already been taken care of. Your rent includes:
Wi-Fi.
Electricity.
Heating.
Water.
Content insurance.
Every room also comes fully furnished, making it much easier to move in without needing to purchase furniture before the semester begins.
Rather than filling the building with facilities that rarely get used, Shrubhill House Edinburgh focuses on the services students rely on throughout the year.

Every student values something different in accommodation. Some prioritise location, as they would rather not spend an hour commuting every day. Others care more about having a private space where they can focus without interruption. Some simply want predictable monthly costs.
That balance is where Shrubhill House student halls perform well.
Students choosing studios gain complete independence with their kitchen and bathroom, while shared en-suite flats provide a more social atmosphere without sacrificing personal space. Because utility bills are already included, budgeting is simpler throughout the year, something that many students appreciate once university expenses begin to add up.
Another advantage of student residence Shrubhill House is that daily life doesn't require much planning. Grocery stores, transport links, cafés, study spaces and green areas are all close enough to become part of an ordinary routine rather than separate trips across the city.
If you've been comparing halls at Shrubhill House, halls of residence at Shrubhill House, or other student accommodation options across Edinburgh, this residence stands out for its practical approach rather than unnecessary extras. Friendly staff but horrible accommodation. They give out ear plugs at the reception, think that says everything…

Get yourself a cardboard box and sleep out. Bad bed, bad pillows, duvet not made up, no WiFi, no TV, no soap, no bath mat, no hand towels, refresher towels for£5, no hangers, carpet looks like the dog been eating off it. Maintenance ppl around at 11pm, 1am and 130am talking like it was midday, sounded like they were in my room. Bad check in, attitude from staff on desk (Employee:I don't normally work in this building) no but you work for the company! Bad bad bad avoid at all cost!

I live here as a student, and I do not recommend it. Well, yes it is cheap and also pretty close to University of Edinburgh, but this place is just a mass. First, there’s barely any place to store my belongings, like there are only one tiny wardrobe with no drawer, I even have to put my clothes in the drawers of my desk. Second, who chose the chair? The chair looks very stylish but nothing to do with comfortable, the chair doesn’t even fit in the table! So I’ll have to sit pretty far away from the table, and it’s not a good thing for student like me as I need to study and do assessment in front of the table for a few hours. Lastly, what the hell is painting work? I am even required to move away from my room? If the room is not ready, just don’t sell it to people! Ok, if I came back with any missing items, I’ll surely sue them for this.
