Clayton is the obvious starting point for any Monash University accommodation search, and most students who look at other areas return to it once they work out the transport costs and times from the CBD. The suburbs within easy range of Clayton each have a different character worth understanding before committing to one.
Clayton (VIC 3168)
A 0 to 2km walk from campus, roughly 5 to 20 minutes depending on where in Clayton you are and which part of the campus your lectures are in. Clayton is a genuine student precinct: high-density shared housing, budget-friendly eateries, Asian supermarkets with lower prices than CBD equivalents, and a large international student community.
Share rooms directly around campus run from approximately AU$220 to AU$320 per week, and the transport cost to campus is zero. For first-year students and international students arriving for the first time, Clayton removes most of the daily logistical complexity.
Huntingdale (VIC 3166)
About 3km from campus, roughly 10 minutes via the free Monash shuttle bus to Huntingdale railway station. Huntingdale is built around its train station, which is the key interchange for the Monash shuttle and gives direct rail access to the Melbourne CBD. Students who want to combine campus access with a direct city line find Huntingdale the most practical base outside Clayton itself.
Oakleigh (VIC 3166)
About 4km from campus, 10 to 15 minutes via bus routes 601 or 703 or a train and bus combination. Oakleigh is known for its Greek-Australian food strip on Eaton Mall, which is one of the better local eating destinations in Melbourne's south-east. It also has its own railway station. Students who want a genuine neighbourhood feel with good food options and dual access to campus and the city centre find Oakleigh a strong alternative to Clayton.
Mount Waverley (VIC 3149)
About 6km from campus, accessible by bus and then the Glen Waverley train line. Mount Waverley is quieter and more residential than the areas closer to campus, with a direct train line into the Melbourne CBD. Whole houses here run from approximately AU$600 to AU$950 per week for a three to four-bedroom property. It suits postgraduate students or anyone who wants a calmer base at the cost of a slightly longer daily commute.
Glen Waverley (VIC 3150)
About 8km south-east of campus, served by the local bus network. Glen Waverley has the Glen shopping centre, a strong Asian-Australian community, and a more affluent suburban character than Clayton. It suits students who prefer quieter share housing with good local amenities and are comfortable with the bus commute to campus.

One practical note: the Clayton campus is large. Always confirm which specific precinct your classes are in before deciding how close you need to live. The free intercampus and Huntingdale shuttle bus runs roughly every four minutes during peak times and is a genuine cost-saver for students who live along its route.
