Great Place to stay, I had a lovely studio booked again for another year. Room spacious and really nice loads of storage space, staff are lovely and really helpful especially Rosie the Manager any issues she sorted very quickly.

Avoid this accommodation at all costs. I moved in to the accommodation the beginning of September 2023. My experience was the opposite of what student life away from home should be like. The room itself was nice although the floor was filthy after having just moved in indicating that they are not cleaned before new students arrive. The clothes dryers were ineffective and I had issues with a clogged shower drain. I was having issues with my house mates including loud music and partying till early hours of the morning and strangers in my kitchen at night. My mental health declined massively due to constant stress and worry and sleepless nights. I went to the site manager at the front desk several times and nothing was done e.g said she would speak to my house mates and never did. After leaving the accommodation due to my mental health I was contacted months later regarding the debt I owe due to not paying rent as I was living at home. There was no clear communication whatsoever with the site manager to get this sorted or look at my options. She would give me false hope that the room would be filled to avoid the debt and that she was advertising my room. The site manager ignores student well-being, is extremely insincere and is often times not at the desk or it is shut. Don’t be fooled by the good reviews as she bribes students into writing them by giving them things like easter eggs, energy drinks ect. The posts regarding good reviews for treats have either had their captions changed or have been deleted of their Facebook page. Let’s see if this post gets altered.

Review of The Coal Yard – CityLodgers, York (Stay: 23rd August 2025) My recent stay at The Coal Yard – CityLodgers in York was extremely disappointing and fell far below acceptable standards. Upon arrival, guests were informed that check-in could not be completed as staff were “unorganised” and needed to “step back to reorganise” before rooms could be made ready. This unprofessional handling of check-in created unnecessary delays and frustration, despite it being a basic process that should run smoothly. Even more concerning, I was told that toilet paper was not provided and that guests were expected to purchase their own, with reimbursement possible only if receipts were kept. This is wholly unreasonable. Toilet paper is a basic necessity, not an optional extra, and it should always be provided without question. Later, after returning from an evening out in York, I discovered that no clean towels had been provided in the accommodation — another essential that was completely overlooked. The lack of organisation, delays at check-in, and failure to provide the most fundamental provisions (toilet paper and towels) reflect a serious lack of professionalism. This experience caused significant inconvenience and left me with no confidence in the service or standards of this establishment. I cannot recommend The Coal Yard – CityLodgers based on my experience, and I hope management takes immediate action to address these issues.

this is a nice block of accommodation. close to the centre, and supermarket shopping in easy walking distance. Modern and well appointed. Compact accommodation, great shared spaces for cooking and socialising. Definitely invest in a fan, the panoramic windows will keep students toasty! Costlier than some alternatives, but if that's do - able, go for it. AP York - managed property was cheaper last year but poor management made it a disappointing experience compared to the Coal Yard.
