University Of York Accommodation

The University of York opened in 1963 and has developed into a campus university with more than 20,000 students. Current HESA figures for 2024–25 record 15,810 undergraduates, 210 other undergraduate students, 4,890 taught postgraduates and 1,435 research postgraduates.

Wentworth primarily supports the postgraduate community. College membership continues even when a student later moves off campus, so private renters can still attend college events and use the support network.

Campus West and Campus East form the main Heslington site. Academic departments, colleges, libraries, sports facilities, cafés and shops spread between both areas. The university describes the campus as 500 acres of parkland, gardens, wetlands and lakes.

Most University of York student accommodation belongs to the college system. The university also uses approved off-campus rooms when it needs additional capacity.

York’s college system remains part of student life after first year.

Every college organises social events, music, volunteering and sport. College teams compete in more than 20 leagues, giving students a route into regular sport without joining a university-level squad.

York Students’ Union currently supports more than 300 student groups when societies, sports and volunteering projects are counted together. The university also highlights more than 250 student-led societies.

On campus, students have cafés, bars, study spaces, York Sport facilities and the student cinema. York Sport Village includes a competition-standard pool, fitness facilities and outdoor sports provision.

The city adds a different part of the week. Walmgate and Fossgate have independent restaurants and cafés. The Shambles and central shopping streets attract heavy visitor traffic during the day, while Micklegate and other central streets become more active in the evening.

A campus room makes college events and late library sessions easy. A Walmgate tenancy brings the city closer but adds the journey back to Heslington.

The cheapest room costs £5,960 for 40 weeks. An en-suite in one of the newer Campus East colleges can exceed £10,000 because both the weekly rate and contract length increase.

Shared-Bathroom College Room

A shared-bathroom room gives one student a private bedroom while several residents use communal showers and toilets.

Halifax St Lawrence offers the lowest current university rate at £149 per week. Other shared-bathroom rooms appear throughout Halifax, Derwent, Vanbrugh and parts of Campus East.

Ask how many residents use each bathroom and whether the room has its own washbasin. James College, for example, gives residents a personal basin even in shared-bathroom rooms.

En-suite College Room

An en-suite includes a private shower, toilet and washbasin.

Alcuin offers one of the lower-priced university en-suites at £206 per week. Anne Lister and David Kato begin at £213, while Campus East deluxe or larger rooms cost more.

Flatmates still share the kitchen, so check household size before choosing by bathroom type alone.

Catered Room

James and parts of Vanbrugh and Derwent offer catered accommodation.

James charges £244 per week for a shared-bathroom catered room and £266 for an en-suite.

Catering increases the weekly price but replaces some grocery and cooking costs. Review the actual meal schedule before deciding if the extra payment matches your timetable.

Private En-suite in a Managed Building

The Boulevard, Abode York and several other private residences offer en-suite bedrooms within shared flats.

The Boulevard’s current long-term en-suite starts at £219 per week, while Abode York begins at £212.

Private providers commonly include utilities and internet. Contracts often extend beyond university term dates.

Studio

Studios combine a sleeping area, private bathroom and kitchen within one self-contained space.

Foss Studios begins at £227, Student Castle has current studio categories from around £290 and Abode York starts at £270.

A studio removes kitchen sharing but also removes much of the casual contact that comes from a college flat or house.

Private House

Hull Road, Fulford, Badger Hill, Heslington and Tang Hall contain a substantial private house market.

Each resident usually receives a bedroom and shares the kitchen, bathroom and lounge. Bills may remain separate.

University of York private accommodation includes HMOs, single rooms, complete flats and purpose-built student residences. The university currently supports students living in all of these formats through its private-sector housing service.

Current room availability changes throughout the booking cycle. The cheapest category can disappear while the building remains open for other room types.

The lowest published accommodation near University of York remains university-managed housing.

Halifax St Lawrence costs £5,960 over 40 weeks. Vanbrugh Fairfax House follows at £6,600, although that room includes catering. A standard Halifax room costs £7,440.

Private options become more relevant for returning students because the university reserves most campus housing for first years and priority groups. Returning-undergraduate applications for 2026–27 have already closed.

Among the currently listed managed private properties, Frederick House begins at £199 and Valerian at about £198, although the latter’s lowest category needs an occupancy check.

A shared house can cost less again. Add gas, electricity, water, broadband and any transport before treating the monthly rent as the final figure.

Walking

Campus West and Campus East connect on foot.

The university describes both as parts of one compact campus, so a student living in a Campus East college can still reach Campus West teaching without treating it as a separate commute.

Badger Hill, Heslington and parts of Hull Road also allow regular walking.

City-centre properties take longer, particularly when the destination lies on Campus East rather than Campus West.

University Buses

U1 and U2 connect Campus East, Campus West and York city centre.

The U1 travels from York Sport Village through the campus towards Green Dykes Lane and the city. The U2 follows another route through The Retreat and the Barbican. Students travel free within the university’s designated campus zone when they tap on and tap off correctly.

Summer timetables use fewer U1 and U2 services. Term-time frequencies return in September.

Cycling

York’s flat terrain makes cycling practical from Hull Road, Fulford, Fishergate, Walmgate and much of the city centre.

Both campus areas provide bicycle parking, and the university actively encourages cycling as part of its transport policy.

A bicycle also gives students more control during busy bus periods.

Check whether a private property has controlled-access storage. An uncovered rack beside the street provides less protection than a locked cycle room.

Railway Travel

York railway station provides direct links to London, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh and many other UK cities.

Students who travel frequently may value Holgate or the city centre despite the longer university journey.

The university estimates a taxi from York station to campus at around 15 to 20 minutes under normal conditions.

Late-Night Travel

The UN1 operates as a late-night university bus between Campus East and York city centre. During the summer 2026 timetable, it operates on Friday and Saturday nights, while term-time services return from 20 September.

Students planning regular evenings in the city should check the final service time as well as the daytime route.
