Best Areas for Student Housing in Cork

Areas Near University College Cork (UCC):

College Road, Magazine Road, Glasheen, The Lough: These areas immediately surround the UCC campus. Very popular for their convenience (walking distance to lectures). Housing is primarily shared houses and digs. Can be competitive to secure rentals.

Victoria Cross: A well-known student hub close to UCC, offering good access to campus and a student-friendly atmosphere. Mainly shared housing.

Wilton: Located west of UCC, convenient for both UCC and Cork University Hospital (CUH). Offers good amenities (Wilton Shopping Centre) and bus connections. Mix of housing types.

Western Road: Runs alongside UCC campus, location of some PBSA like Amnis House. Very convenient but can be busy.

Areas Near Munster Technological University (MTU - Bishopstown Campus):

Bishopstown: The large suburb where the main MTU campus is situated. Very popular for MTU students, offering a residential feel with good local amenities and bus routes (e.g., 205) to the city centre. Location of several large PBSA blocks (Melbourn Point, Parchment Square) and nearby options (Courtville Apartments).

Wilton: Also convenient for MTU due to its proximity to Bishopstown.

Curraheen: Area close to MTU, location of Curraheen Point PBSA.

Cork City Centre:

Pros: Bustling atmosphere, immediate access to shops, restaurants, pubs, nightlife, cultural venues, and main bus/train stations. Several large PBSA blocks are located here (e.g., Lee Point, Coleman Court, Bottleworks). Walkable or a short bus ride to UCC; longer bus ride (e.g., route 205) required for MTU.

Cons: Generally the most expensive area for rent. Can be noisy.

Specific Areas: Washington Street, North Main Street, South Main Street, Barrack Street, areas around the English Market.

Other Considerations:

Ballyphehane / Turners Cross: Residential areas south of the city centre, potentially offering slightly more affordable options than the immediate UCC vicinity or city centre, with bus access.

Douglas / Ballincollig: Larger suburban towns outside the immediate city core. May offer more affordable rents but require longer commutes via bus or car.
