Training at NSCD is demanding, but life outside the studio is just as important. The school has a relatively small student community, so it's easy to get to know classmates across different year groups. That close environment is one of the reasons many students settle in quickly after arriving in Leeds.
The Students' Union supports students throughout the year with welfare guidance, social events and student-led activities. Rather than managing hundreds of societies like a large university, the focus is on creating opportunities for students to connect, collaborate and build relationships within the conservatoire community.
Shops, Essentials & Weekend Browsing
Chapeltown has independent convenience stores, cafés and supermarkets for day-to-day shopping. When you need more choice, Leeds city centre is only a short bus journey away.
Popular shopping destinations include:
- Trinity Leeds for fashion, restaurants and entertainment.
- Victoria Leeds for major retailers and premium brands.
- Leeds Kirkgate Market for fresh food, independent traders and affordable lunches.
Most students combine their weekly food shopping with trips into the city centre, where larger supermarkets offer better value than smaller local stores.
Social Life Beyond the Studio
Dance lessons take long hours of rehearsal, but there are lots of ways to unwind after class in Leeds.
Chapeltown has a strong creative identity and holds activities for the community throughout the year. The area’s largest event is the Chapeltown Carnival, one of the longest-running Caribbean carnivals in the UK, which fills the neighbourhood with music, shows and cuisine every summer.
Plus, Leeds city centre has got the options, with live music venues, independent bars, cafes, comedy clubs and cinemas. Whether it’s a quiet coffee after rehearsals, or meeting friends on a weekend, you’ll seldom have to go far.
Healthcare Within Easy Reach
Students usually register with an NHS GP close to their accommodation after arriving in Leeds. Pharmacies are available across Chapeltown and the city centre, while larger NHS services and hospitals are easily reached by bus or taxi if specialist treatment is required.
Staying Active Outside Dance
Daily training provides plenty of physical activity, but many students still use local gyms for strength work, conditioning or recovery sessions. Several fitness centres operate around Leeds city centre and Woodhouse, making them convenient before or after rehearsals.
