Leeds Arts University Accommodation

Leeds Arts University traces its history to the Leeds School of Art, founded in 1846. The institution gained university status in 2017 and remains the only specialist arts university in the North of England. Former students include Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Damien Hirst.

The university uses two main Leeds buildings. Blenheim Walk, LS2 9AQ, teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Vernon Street, behind Leeds City Museum, houses Foundation Diploma and Extended Diploma programmes. Anyone joining a degree course should therefore measure accommodation routes to Blenheim Walk, not Vernon Street.

Blenheim Walk contains specialist studios, film and photography facilities, fashion spaces, workshops, a performance auditorium, postgraduate study areas, galleries and an arts library. Fine Art learners also use facilities for wood, metal, plastics, casting, ceramics, glass, printing and large-format digital production.

The university does not own a large conventional hall estate. It works with Carr Mills and The Leather Works, where applicants receive preferential rates through the university. This means Leeds Arts University student accommodation usually involves a contract with an external provider, even when the university helps arrange the room.

First-year applicants receive an accommodation guarantee when they firmly accept their place and complete the provider’s booking process by 15 May 2026. The guarantee covers a place at Carr Mills or The Leather Works, but it does not promise a particular building or room category. The Leather Works has already filled all rooms for 2026 entry, leaving Carr Mills as the main partner-hall option still worth checking.

The official institution name includes “Arts.” Third-party property pages sometimes use Leeds Art University student accommodation as a shortened label. Both names should point to Blenheim Walk, but the postcode remains the safest way to confirm the route.

Leeds Arts University University Accommodation

Leeds Arts Union organises events, campaigns, societies, sports activities, fundraising and the student magazine. Course representatives also connect each programme with university staff.

The smaller student body creates regular contact between different creative subjects. Exhibitions, performances, screenings, talks and end-of-year shows bring work from Fine Art, Fashion, Filmmaking, Photography, Illustration, Graphic Design and other courses into the same building. The 2026 undergraduate showcase transforms Blenheim Walk into a large public exhibition space in June.

Leeds adds a substantial cultural scene outside university. Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute occupy the city centre. Hyde Park Picture House, Brudenell Social Club, Left Bank Leeds and independent studio organisations provide film, music, exhibitions and creative events.

Blenheim Walk also remains near Bakery 164, the Merrion Centre, Millennium Square and several cafés. Leeds Arts University highlights local creative organisations including East Street Arts, Assembly House and Castleton Mill as part of the city’s wider artistic community.

A course materials budget still matters. Leeds has several art shops and Kirkgate Market can help with lower-cost household purchases, fabrics and everyday food. Keep receipts during the first term so the second-term budget reflects actual course spending.

University Quarter and Woodhouse

Woodhouse gives degree students the shortest route. Blenheim Walk, the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett buildings and several student residences occupy the same part of the city.

Woodhouse Flats lies about five minutes from campus. Broadcasting Tower stands opposite the university building on Woodhouse Lane, while Austin Hall and Asquith House remain around ten minutes away on foot.

This part of Leeds makes sense for early studio sessions and project days that finish later than planned. The city centre also remains walkable, so most weeks require little spending on transport.

The neighbourhood stays active during term because several institutions share the area. Street noise, delivery vehicles and large student buildings can affect bedrooms facing main roads. Ask where the window faces and which floor the room occupies before making a payment.

Close Leeds Arts University accommodation carries a higher price when the property includes a private bathroom or kitchenette. Woodhouse Flats remains a notable exception, with current en-suite rooms from £125 per week.

Meanwood Road and Carr Mills

Carr Mills occupies Buslingthorpe Lane, north of Blenheim Walk. The walk to university takes around 15 minutes, and the residence accepts only Leeds Arts University students.

The building has 298 rooms arranged in five-, six- and seven-bedroom flats. Most bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom, while every flat has a kitchen and lounge. Wi-Fi, utility bills and contents insurance form part of the rent.

Carr Mills creates a more defined university community than a general private residence. Everyone in the building studies at the same specialist institution, which can make first-year friendships and course connections feel more immediate.

Meanwood Valley Trail begins nearby, while supermarkets and buses cover everyday errands. The city centre takes longer to reach on foot than it does from Woodhouse, but the campus route remains reasonable.

Burley and The Leather Works

The Leather Works occupies Meanwood Road and takes approximately 20 minutes to reach from Blenheim Walk on foot.

The residence has en-suite bedrooms, shared kitchens, a gym, cinema space, quiet study rooms, cycle storage and communal areas. All main utility bills and Wi-Fi form part of the rent. The building has filled its 2026 allocation, so its published prices should only serve as a local benchmark unless a cancellation releases a room.

Burley extends west from the university quarter and usually offers lower house-share prices than the immediate campus streets. Frequent buses serve Burley Road, while cycling can cut the route to Blenheim Walk.

The area suits returning students who want a more independent household without committing to Headingley. Large supermarkets and local food shops also make weekly grocery trips less expensive than repeated city-centre top-ups.

Leeds City Centre and Arena Quarter

The Arena Quarter lies south-east of Blenheim Walk. The Plaza, Sky Plaza, Tribeka and several newer private residences occupy this district.

Campus usually takes 10 to 20 minutes to reach on foot. The Merrion Centre, First Direct Arena, supermarkets, cafés and city-centre shops remain nearby.

This location suits anyone who wants university and city life within the same walkable area. It can also help with part-time work in retail, hospitality or entertainment.

Traffic and evening events can raise noise around Clay Pit Lane and the arena. A room on a higher floor does not always solve the problem when it faces a busy road.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park has long provided the standard Leeds house-share experience. Victorian terraces line Royal Park Road, Brudenell Road, Cardigan Road and the streets around Woodhouse Moor.

Blenheim Walk often takes 15 to 25 minutes to reach on foot. Buses can reduce the trip, though many residents simply walk through Woodhouse.

The neighbourhood has independent cafés, supermarkets, takeaways, music venues and Hyde Park Picture House. The Brudenell Social Club also gives the area one of Leeds’ best-known live-music venues.

House condition varies substantially. One property may have a recently fitted kitchen and reliable heating; the next may have damp, weak insulation and an old boiler. Inspect the exact room and communal areas before signing.

Headingley

Headingley lies farther north-west and has a large student population, supermarkets, pubs, cafés, gyms and regular buses towards the university quarter.

The route to Blenheim Walk usually takes 20 to 35 minutes, depending on the street and traffic. Services along Otley Road offer the most useful connection.

Larger houses form much of the accommodation stock. Headingley can therefore suit a group that wants more communal space, a garden or additional storage.

An art course with frequent studio access can make the daily journey tiring. Headingley works better when the rent saving is clear or the household already has strong reasons to choose the area.

Kirkstall and Outer Burley

Kirkstall and outer Burley often provide larger bedrooms and lower weekly rents. The Tannery and several managed properties occupy this western side of Leeds.

Buses cover Burley Road and Kirkstall Road, while Burley Park railway station offers local services towards Leeds station. The complete trip to Blenheim Walk still includes a walk at the university end.

This district can suit a student who values a larger room or quieter address more than campus proximity. It becomes less practical when the course requires carrying large work to university several times each week.

Art and design courses do not create the same expenses every week. A quiet research period may cost little. A production week can require paper, fabric, paint, model-making supplies, printing or specialist equipment.

A room near Blenheim Walk can remove most transport costs. Hyde Park and Woodhouse also allow many students to walk, while Headingley and Kirkstall make bus spending more likely.

Leeds Arts University learners can use the £2 University Single on eligible First Bus services. A valid Leeds Arts University student card counts as accepted proof. The ticket covers several routes connecting the centre, Woodhouse, Hyde Park and Headingley.

International Student visa applicants studying outside London currently need to show £1,171 for each month of the course, up to nine months, unless an exemption applies. This figure serves the visa process and should not replace a realistic personal budget.

Non-En-suite Room

A non-en-suite room gives one resident a private bedroom, followed by communal bathrooms and a shared kitchen.

Carr Mills has a very small number of non-en-suite rooms at £147 per week. Traditional houses in Hyde Park, Burley and Headingley also use this arrangement.

Ask how many residents share each bathroom. One bathroom between four people feels very different from one bathroom serving seven bedrooms.

En-suite Room

An en-suite room includes a private shower, toilet and washbasin. The kitchen and lounge remain communal.

Carr Mills, The Leather Works, Woodhouse Flats, Austin Hall, Asquith House, The Plaza, Sky Plaza and Broadcasting Tower all offer this format.

The kitchen matters as much as the bathroom. Art students often work irregular hours and return home at different times, so insufficient fridge shelves or preparation space can become a daily frustration.

Studio

A studio combines the bedroom, kitchenette and study space inside one private unit, with a separate bathroom.

Carr Mills studios cost £193 per week under the 44-week university arrangement. Private studios near campus start around £175 at Austin Hall, though higher categories and current availability can push the live price above £230.

A studio gives control over noise and cleaning. It also leaves less natural contact with flatmates, which may matter during the first months in a new city.

Shared Room

A shared room places two beds inside one bedroom. Asquith House and selected private residences include this category.

The lower price comes with less control over sleep, calls, visitors and storage. Two creative-course students can fill a small room quickly with portfolios, clothing, equipment and project work.

Confirm that the stated rent applies to each person. Providers nearly always quote twin-room prices per resident.

Private Room in a Shared House

A private bedroom in a conventional house usually shares bathrooms, a kitchen and lounge with the rest of the household.

Listings grouped under student houses Leeds Art University commonly refer to properties in Woodhouse, Hyde Park, Burley and Headingley. The official university name matters less than the postcode and route to Blenheim Walk.

A shared house can provide more storage and communal space than a managed flat. It can also leave tenants responsible for utility accounts, broadband, cleaning and direct communication with the landlord.

Entire Flat or House

A complete tenancy suits an established group that wants control over the household.

Agree on bedroom prices before signing. A large attic room, small box bedroom and ground-floor room beside the front door do not necessarily deserve an equal rent split.

Check the council-tax exemption process as well. Every full-time resident should supply the required student evidence promptly.

Carr Mills

Carr Mills gives first-year applicants a Leeds Arts-only residence within a 15-minute walk of Blenheim Walk.

Most rooms have private bathrooms. Each flat shares a kitchen and lounge, while Wi-Fi, utility bills and contents insurance form part of the fee. The building also has landscaped outdoor space, laundry facilities and 24-hour security.

The large en-suite costs £151 per week over 44 weeks. This makes it cheaper overall than several private rooms with lower weekly prices and longer contracts.

The Leather Works

The Leather Works offered the lowest 2026 university-partner price at £129 per week. Every room has an en-suite bathroom, and the property includes a gym, cinema room, study spaces, cycle hire and an on-site bakery.

All 2026 rooms are currently booked. Keep it as a reference point or cancellation option, not as a room you can assume remains available.

Woodhouse Flats

Woodhouse Flats currently begins at £125 per week for a Premium En-suite. The 51-week tenancy costs £6,375.

The property occupies St Mark’s Street, about five minutes from Blenheim Walk. Bills form part of the rent, and the room comes with a private bathroom and shared kitchen.

Recent reviews praise the location and on-site staff but mention small bedrooms, thin walls and limited kitchen equipment. Inspect the exact room and shared facilities before booking.

Austin Hall

Austin Hall begins at £145 per week for a Classic En-suite. Its Standard Studio costs £175, while available higher studio categories cost more.

The residence lies around ten minutes from campus and includes utility bills in the rent. Current contracts include 13-, 19- and 51-week options for selected rooms.

Shorter tenancies can help exchange learners or anyone who needs accommodation for part of the year. Check that the dates match the complete course period.

Asquith House

Asquith House also begins at £145 per week for a Classic En-suite. Premium en-suites cost £170, while studios begin near £230.

The property offers shared rooms, private bedrooms and studios, giving it more room-format flexibility than many nearby buildings. Bills form part of the rent.

Austin Hall and Asquith House have similar prices and locations. The best choice will depend on the available flat size, room condition and tenancy dates.

The Plaza

The Plaza currently begins at £163 per week for an en-suite room. Studios appear at a higher rate.

The building includes study rooms, a gym, cinema space, bicycle storage, laundry facilities and on-site security. Bills and Wi-Fi form part of the contract.

Clay Pit Lane keeps the city centre close and Blenheim Walk within a manageable walk. Event traffic around the arena can affect some evenings.

Sky Plaza

Sky Plaza starts at £173 per week and includes en-suite rooms, studios and one-bedroom apartments.

Current en-suite contracts extend to 44 or 51 weeks, with shorter options available in selected categories. The property has study facilities, social areas, a gym and security.

The residence charges more than The Plaza despite sharing the same Clay Pit Lane area. Compare bedroom size, floor level and kitchen group before paying the difference.

Broadcasting Tower

Broadcasting Tower stands directly opposite Blenheim Walk and currently lists available private rooms from about £220 per week.

Residents receive a private bathroom and share a kitchen, or they can pay more for a self-contained studio. Security, Wi-Fi and the main utility bills form part of the rent.

The location carries genuine value for art students. Large work, fragile models and late studio sessions become easier when home is across the road. The annual cost remains substantially higher than Carr Mills or Woodhouse Flats.

St Mark’s Court

St Mark’s Court offers only studios. Current available categories begin at £231 per week, although lower-priced studios displayed on the page have sold out.

A Premium Studio at £231 over 51 weeks costs £11,781. The fee covers utility bills and Wi-Fi, and every room has a private kitchen and bathroom.

The building suits someone who needs complete privacy near campus. Its full contract costs almost twice as much as a Woodhouse Flats en-suite.

The lowest price and the lowest full rent do not always belong to the same property.

Woodhouse Flats provides the lowest current private entry price near Blenheim Walk. Carr Mills costs more each week but uses a shorter standard contract and creates a Leeds Arts-only first-year community.

Walking

Blenheim Walk lies at the top of Woodhouse Lane, opposite the University of Leeds Parkinson Tower.

Leeds railway station takes around 23 minutes to reach on foot. Leeds Bus Station takes approximately 28 minutes. Vernon Street lies closer to both, but degree learners should continue north towards Blenheim Walk.

Woodhouse, the university quarter and the Arena Quarter all make daily walking realistic. Hyde Park also remains manageable for many residents.

Buses from Hyde Park and Headingley

The Woodhouse Lane and Otley Road corridors carry frequent services between the city, Hyde Park, Headingley and the university area.

First Bus offers a £2 University Single on eligible Leeds routes. Accepted identification includes a Leeds Arts University student card. Services covered include the 19, 19A, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28 and 56 within their listed university-fare sections.

The bus helps with large bags and poor weather. Peak traffic can make walking faster from central Hyde Park.

Buses from Burley and Kirkstall

Burley Road and Kirkstall Road provide bus connections towards the city centre. Residents usually leave near the centre and continue towards Blenheim Walk on foot or by another service.

A direct-looking map route can still involve waiting and a final uphill walk. Test the journey before signing a tenancy in outer Kirkstall.

Cycling

Woodhouse, Hyde Park, Burley and Meanwood all give Blenheim Walk realistic cycling routes.

Secure storage matters at both ends. Ask the accommodation provider whether the bicycle remains inside a locked building or in an exposed outdoor rack.

Large portfolios and delicate work need another travel plan. A bicycle can handle ordinary days but not every submission.

Rail Travel

Leeds station connects directly with York, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, Liverpool and London.

The walk from the station to Blenheim Walk takes just over 20 minutes. A local bus or taxi can help with luggage on arrival day.

Burley Park and Headingley stations connect the north-western neighbourhoods with Leeds station, but they do not remove the final route to university.

Airport Travel

Leeds Bradford Airport connects with the city through airport bus services. Travellers should check the current timetable before an early flight.

Manchester Airport provides more long-haul routes and can be reached by rail, though engineering work can alter direct services. Leave extra time during weekends and holiday periods.
