For RMIT students in creative fields, Fitzroy and its surrounding streets have galleries, studios, and design shops that connect directly to the professional world they are training to enter.

Because the City Campus is embedded in the CBD, most accommodation options involve being somewhere in Melbourne's inner suburbs rather than on or immediately adjacent to a campus site. The practical question is which suburb fits your budget, commute tolerance, and preferred daily atmosphere.

Melbourne CBD (VIC 3000)

A 0 to 1km walk to campus, roughly 2 to 15 minutes depending on which campus building your lectures are in. Share room rents run approximately AU$300 to AU$450 per week. Living in the CBD means zero transport cost for most daily commutes and immediate access to everything Melbourne offers. The trade-off is higher rent and a busier, more urban daily environment that suits some students and exhausts others.

Carlton (VIC 3053)

About 1.5km from campus, a 15 to 20-minute walk or a short tram ride. Share room rents run approximately AU$280 to AU$420 per week. Carlton is the classic Melbourne student suburb: Victorian terrace houses, the Lygon Street Italian restaurant strip, proximity to both RMIT and the University of Melbourne. It is quieter than the CBD while still being within easy walking distance for many students.

North Melbourne (VIC 3051)

About 2km from campus, roughly 15 minutes by tram. Share room rents run approximately AU$270 to AU$400 per week. North Melbourne has Errol Street's cafes, the Queen Victoria Market a short distance away, and a more residential pace than the CBD. It is generally cheaper than Carlton and suits students who want to minimise rent without sacrificing access to campus.

Fitzroy (VIC 3065)

About 2.5km from campus, a 10 to 15-minute tram ride. Share room rents run approximately AU$300 to AU$430 per week. Fitzroy is Melbourne's most actively bohemian inner suburb: Brunswick Street's bars, galleries, live music venues, and independent shops give it a character that is directly relevant for students in creative and design programmes. It is not cheap but it is genuinely interesting to live in.

Southbank / Docklands

About 1 to 2km from campus, 10 to 15 minutes by tram. Share room rents run approximately AU$320 to AU$460 per week. These modern high-rise precincts along the Yarra River and Victoria Harbour have a lot of purpose-built student accommodation. They are newer and more amenity-rich than the Victorian terrace suburbs but have a less established neighbourhood character. International students who want modern facilities and a contemporary setup often find these areas practical.

North Melbourne is the budget pick among these areas. It consistently comes in below Carlton and Fitzroy on share room rents while remaining accessible by tram. Southbank and Docklands are the premium picks for students who want modern high-rise living with city or water views.

Melbourne is expensive by Australian standards. Excluding rent, RMIT students should budget AU$340 to AU$500 per week to cover groceries, transport, bills, social activities, and course costs.

Groceries run from AU$110 to AU$160 per week. The Queen Victoria Market is a short walk from the RMIT City Campus and offers fresh produce at prices below major CBD supermarkets. Shopping there rather than at convenience stores in the CBD makes a noticeable difference across a semester.

The room type range near RMIT City Campus reflects the inner-Melbourne housing market: expensive studios in CBD towers at the top, shared rooms in Carlton and North Melbourne terrace houses at the bottom, with private rooms and en-suites covering the middle ground.

A shared room, where you share a bedroom with one or more students, is the most affordable option and is most common in the private rental share house market in Carlton and North Melbourne. It suits students who are primarily budget-focused and comfortable with low privacy. This format is less common in modern purpose-built student accommodation.

A private room in a shared flat or house gives you your own bedroom and access to shared kitchen, living area, and bathroom facilities. This is the standard format for share housing across Melbourne's inner suburbs and represents the most common RMIT student living arrangement. Private rooms in Carlton share houses run from approximately AU$280 to AU$420 per week.

An en-suite room adds a private bathroom. This is more common in purpose-built student accommodation than in private terrace share housing, and costs more than a standard private room. It suits students who find sharing bathroom facilities difficult.

A studio flat is fully self-contained. In the CBD and Southbank, studios in purpose-built accommodation start from AU$620 per week and go significantly higher. House of Student lists five properties for RMIT students. Three are in or close to Melbourne's inner suburbs with manageable commutes. Two are in Southbank or Docklands with higher prices.

UniLodge Park Avenue is in Parkville, bordering Carlton, at a similar commute distance to UniLodge Lincoln House. Rooms start at AU$329 per week. This is one of the lower starting prices among purpose-built options with a reasonable inner-city commute.

UniLodge Lincoln House is at 125 Bouverie Street, Carlton, a 15 to 20-minute walk or short tram ride from the City Campus. Rooms start at AU$449 per week. The Carlton location gives students access to Lygon Street and the residential character of the inner suburb while remaining close to campus.

UKO Melbourne Central is at 19 Exploration Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000, 1.52km from campus, a 7-minute walk. Rooms start at AU$620 per week. CBD location with modern facilities. The most walkable PBSA option in the list.

West Tower Melbourne Quarter is at 648 Flinders Street, Melbourne VIC 3000, 2.36km from campus, a 23-minute tram or 37-minute walk. Rooms start at AU$700 per week. Premium Docklands location.

The Archive Residential Living is at 205 Normanby Road, Southbank VIC 3006, 3.47km from campus, a 34-minute transit. Rooms start at AU$990 per week. The most expensive property in the list and the furthest from the City Campus of the Melbourne PBSA options.

The affordable section includes properties at La Trobe University's Bundoora campus, which are 20.55km from RMIT's City Campus. The same caveat that applied in the Monash article applies here: these are La Trobe properties that are relevant for RMIT's Bundoora campus students or those willing to make a very long daily commute. They are not practical options for RMIT City Campus students in the way the name suggests.

La Trobe University Chisholm College starts at AU$250 per week at Bundoora, 20.55km from the RMIT City Campus. La Trobe University North and South Apartments start at AU$265 per week at the same location. La Trobe University Glenn College starts at AU$270 per week, also at Bundoora. La Trobe University Menzies College starts at AU$295 per week, 20.79km from the City Campus.

Campus Melbourne at 205 Bell Street, Preston VIC 3072 starts at AU$266 per week and is 10.39km from the RMIT City Campus, a 52-minute transit. Preston is served by the train line but is well outside the inner suburbs.

UniLodge Park Avenue at AU$329 per week is the most affordable genuinely inner-city option in the list.

For RMIT City Campus students whose budget sits below AU$329 per week, the private share housing market in North Melbourne and Carlton is the more practical alternative. Share rooms in those suburbs run from around AU$270 per week without the Bundoora commute.

Melbourne Central railway station is a two to three-minute walk from the RMIT City Campus, at the corner of La Trobe and Swanston Streets. That makes the City Campus one of the best-connected major university campuses in Australia for train commuters. Every Metro Trains Melbourne line that runs through the CBD stops at Melbourne Central.

Melbourne's tram network is the primary daily transport for students living in Carlton, North Melbourne, Fitzroy, and the surrounding inner suburbs. Trams on Swanston Street, La Trobe Street, and the surrounding CBD grid provide direct access to campus from most directions. The CBD tram zone has historically offered free travel within its boundaries. Verify current rules with PTV before assuming this applies to your route.

Cycling is practical for students in Carlton and North Melbourne. Melbourne's inner-city bike lane network extends through these suburbs, and the flat terrain between them and the CBD makes cycling a faster option than trams for short distances.

For students commuting from outer suburbs, Melbourne Central is the arrival point. From there it is a short walk to the City Campus buildings. Most suburban train lines connect to Melbourne Central directly or via City Loop.

For intercity and regional travel, Southern Cross Station is the main hub for V/Line regional services and interstate rail and coach. It is reachable from RMIT by a short walk through the CBD or a tram from campus.

Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) is currently served by SkyBus coach from Southern Cross Station in the CBD. A dedicated airport rail link has been discussed and planned, but students should verify its current status with PTV. All Melbourne public transport uses the myki card.
