Finding somewhere to live can shape a large part of your university experience, particularly when you're moving to Melbourne for the first time. Location, room type, rent, study facilities, and the ease of getting around the city all tend to matter once classes begin and everyday routines take over. Student Village: The University of Melbourne Campus places students in Carlton, close to the University of Melbourne and within easy reach of shops, cafés, restaurants, public transport, and several of Melbourne's familiar student hangouts.
Located at 108–128 Leicester St, Carlton, VIC 3053, the property gives domestic and international students a practical base for university life. Its setting is particularly useful for students who want to spend less time commuting and more time around campus while still having plenty to do once the day's lectures and study sessions are over.
The accommodation also takes a fairly straightforward approach to student living. Students can choose between private studios, shared apartments, and a twin-share option, while facilities across the property cover study, recreation, fitness, and social activities. Rent also includes Wi-Fi, electricity, and water, which keeps some of the regular household expenses together rather than leaving students to manage several separate bills.
The combination makes the Student Village University of Melbourne campus an option worth considering for students who want university, everyday conveniences, and an active inner-city neighborhood within close reach.
The room you choose can make a noticeable difference to how comfortable your university routine feels. Some students prefer having their studio where they can study and unwind without sharing their immediate living space. Others would rather have a shared apartment, particularly if they enjoy having people around and want a more communal setup.
Student Village – University of Melbourne Campus has room categories covering both preferences, with several studio variations alongside larger shared apartments.
Students looking for more privacy can choose from several studio configurations. The available options include:
Standard Studio
Large Studio Apartment
Studio – Superior
Studio Superior Apartment With Balcony
Studio Large with AirCon
The different layouts provide some variation for students who have specific preferences about space, outdoor access, or air conditioning. A studio can also suit students who value having their bedroom, study area, and everyday living space arranged within one private unit.
Students who enjoy a more social setup can consider the shared apartment options. The property offers:
4 Bedroom Apartment
4 Bedroom Apartment (Ensuite)
These arrangements provide individual bedrooms within a shared apartment, allowing residents to have their own personal space while sharing common areas with other students. The ensuite option can also appeal to students who place greater importance on having more private bathroom arrangements.
The Large Studio Twin Share offers another arrangement for students who would rather share their accommodation. It can work particularly well for friends who want to live together, as well as students who are comfortable sharing a larger studio in exchange for a more communal living setup.
Prices at Student Village—University of Melbourne Campus start from around AUD 399.0 per week. The starting figure provides an indication of the property's price range, although the actual rent can vary depending on the room category selected.
One practical advantage is that the rent already includes several essential household costs. Students receive:
Wi-Fi
Electricity
Water
Having these services covered means students have fewer separate bills to keep track of throughout the semester. For anyone working with a fixed weekly budget, that can make it easier to understand the basic cost of living at the property.
A student residence has to accommodate more than sleeping and studying. There are days when you need somewhere quiet to finish an assignment, evenings when you want to meet people without leaving the property, and stretches of the semester when having access to fitness or well-being facilities can make the routine easier to manage.
Student Village – University of Melbourne Campus provides facilities across these different parts of student life, with dedicated spaces for study, socialising, recreation, fitness, and resident support.
Students have access to study rooms for quieter academic work, which can be useful when you need a change from studying in your own room. The property also has a space where residents can spend time together outside their academic schedules.
For more relaxed activities, there is a Games Room, while On-site Events and Craft Workshops give residents opportunities to meet other students through organised activities. Students interested in cooking can also take part in cooking classes, adding another social activity to the usual university routine.
The property includes several facilities that allow students to stay active without having to travel elsewhere for every workout or recreational break.
These include:
Gym
Swimming Pool
Basketball Court
The accommodation also provides study support & wellbeing activities, extending its student services beyond physical facilities. These activities can give residents additional support as they balance academic responsibilities with their personal well-being.
Practical support is another part of the accommodation setup. On-site management is available for resident concerns, while on-site maintenance provides assistance when something within the property requires attention.
Security features include on-site security and secure door entry, giving residents controlled access to the accommodation and additional reassurance as part of their day-to-day living arrangements.
Student Village, The University of Melbourne campus, sits in Carlton, one of Melbourne's inner-city suburbs and a familiar part of the city's university landscape. The area combines a strong academic presence with restaurants, cafés, shops, parks, and public transport, so students have plenty of practical options around them once they move in.
For students at the University of Melbourne, the location is especially convenient. The campus is close enough to make the daily commute relatively simple, while Carlton's streets and surrounding areas provide plenty of places to eat, study, shop or spend time with friends.
The neighborhood also gives students access to several different parts of Melbourne without requiring every trip to begin with a long journey. That matters during a university week, when a quick grocery run or coffee break can otherwise turn into a much longer outing.
The property's location is particularly useful for students attending several institutions in and around central Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne is practically on the doorstep, making the accommodation particularly suitable for students enrolled there. A short journey to campus can make a meaningful difference to a student's daily schedule, especially during early lectures, library sessions, or days filled with back-to-back classes.
Victoria University is another institution that is accessible from the property. Students studying in Melbourne have access to a public transit network that facilitates their journey between their accommodation and campus.
William Angliss Institute, Australia
William Angliss Institute Australia students can also consider the property as a residential option, with the central Carlton location allowing access to Melbourne’s extensive transit network.
Carlton makes everyday tasks pretty easy, which is important since your schedule is already divided between lectures, homework, and social responsibilities. Students in the Student Village University of Melbourne campus – have supermarkets close by for regular grocery shopping, and the streets around also have lots of places to get a coffee or sit down for a full meal.
There are a number of supermarkets and grocery stores available throughout the neighborhood, including
Woolworths Carlton
Coles Express Carlton
Mr Dad Asian Supermarket
Gertrude Grocer
Larger supermarkets can cater for regular weekly shops, while specialist outlets like Mr Dad Asian Supermarket offer students access to a wider variety of Asian goods and products. Another option for picking up groceries and other basic necessities is Gertrude Grocer.
Carlton's restaurant scene gives students plenty of choice when cooking at home is not on the agenda. Lygon Street, in particular, is known for its Italian dining options, while the wider neighborhood has restaurants covering different tastes and budgets.
Some nearby choices include:
Piccolo Mondo Italian Restaurant
Capitano Carlton
Stovetop
Johnny, Vince & Sam's
Il Gambero
Students can head to Lygon Street for Italian favourites at Piccolo Mondo Italian Restaurant or Capitano Carlton, while places such as Stovetop, Johnny, Vince & Sam's, and Il Gambero provide further options around Carlton.
Coffee shops are equally easy to find around the area, whether you're looking for a quick drink before class or somewhere to sit down for a while with your laptop and notes.
Nearby cafés include:
Stovetop
Plus Coffee & Kitchen
University Cafe
Heart of Carlton
Humble Rays
Stovetop also functions as a café, making it a convenient choice for students who want food and coffee in the same place. The other cafés provide additional spots for a morning coffee, casual catch-up, or study break.
Carlton has enough open space and local attractions to give students a break from the routine of lectures, assignments, and time spent indoors. Several parks are close to Student Village: the University of Melbourne Campus, while shopping areas and markets provide options for students who want to explore the neighborhood or head into the city.
There are several green spaces around Carlton where students can slow down for a while. University Square Park and Argyle Square are convenient choices for a short walk, some time outdoors, or a casual picnic. The well-known Carlton Gardens offers another pleasant setting, with its gardens and open areas making it a popular place to spend some time away from campus.
Students looking for a larger open space can also make their way to Princes Park, which is a short distance from the accommodation.
For smaller shopping trips, Lygon Court has local shops and services within the Carlton area. Students can also explore Queen Victoria Market, where the atmosphere is rather different from a conventional shopping center and where fresh produce and a range of other goods can be found.
For larger shopping trips, several major retail destinations are accessible from the property, including:
Melbourne Central
QV Melbourne
Emporium Melbourne
These locations give students more choice when they need clothing, personal items, gifts, or other purchases that may not be available around the immediate neighborhood.
Students have access to several study-friendly libraries beyond their university's own facilities. The ABP Library at the University of Melbourne is one option for students who are studying on or around the university campus.
Other nearby choices include:
Carlton Library
City Library
Having several library options around the area can be useful when students want somewhere quiet to read, work on an assignment, or spend a few hours away from their accommodation.
Carlton also has a selection of pubs where students can meet friends and have a more relaxed evening after classes.
The Queensberry Hotel
The Lincoln
Prince Alfred Carlton
These add another side to the neighborhood, particularly for students who enjoy having casual social venues close to where they live.
Public transport is a vital part of student life in Melbourne, especially for those who need to move between their accommodation, university campuses, retail districts, and other parts of the city. Student Village – University of Melbourne Campus is well connected with a number of bus and tram routes and train stations for longer journeys.
There are various nearby bus stops students can reach, including
Melbourne University / Grattan St
Swanston St/Grattan St/Lygon St/Grattan St
These stops connect students with other regions of Melbourne and provide another alternative for transport outside of Carlton.
Melbourne’s tram network is quite beneficial for moving throughout the inner city, and students staying at the apartment have tram stops within easy reach. Nearby stops are:
Melbourne University/Swanston St #1
Lincoln Square/Swanston St #3
For students who commute regularly to central Melbourne, having tram services close by can make daily commutes much more doable.
For trips further out from Carlton itself, Parkville Railway Station and State Library Station provide additional transport links.
The combination of bus, tram, and train services means students are not locked into one route. What options are helpful will vary on where you are going, what time of day it is, and what type of route it is.
Access to healthcare and fitness facilities is another practical consideration to make when deciding where to live at university. Student Village University of Melbourne campus students have medical centers and hospitals close by, along with a selection of external gyms and exercise facilities in the neighboring area.
Students may go for routine health care needs:
Carlton Medical Center
PrimeCare Medical Center
The Royal Melbourne Hospital - City Campus is just a short distance away for more extensive medical services.
Students also have local options for dealing with ordinary health difficulties, with general medical facilities close by, rather than needing to travel far from Carlton.
The on-site gym gives residents a convenient place to exercise without having to arrange separate travel for every workout. Students who prefer an external gym or a different type of fitness environment also have several choices nearby.
These include:
Anytime Fitness Carlton
Zap Fitness Carlton
Melbourne City Baths
Fernwood Fitness Carlton
Fernwood Fitness Carlton is a women's-only fitness option, while Melbourne City Baths provides an alternative to conventional gym-based workouts.
Choosing student accommodation in Melbourne is rarely about one feature alone. Students usually have to weigh up the room they want, the weekly rent, what is included, how far they will need to travel each day, and whether the surrounding neighborhood works for their lifestyle. Student Village: The University of Melbourne campus brings several of these considerations together in one location.
The choice of accommodation is one of its more practical advantages. Students can opt for a range of private studios, including standard, large, and superior configurations, with some options offering a balcony or air conditioning. Those who would rather share can choose between four-bedroom apartments, including an ensuite variation, while the Large Studio Twin Share provides another shared-living option.
The weekly rent starts from around AUD 399.0, and Wi-Fi, electricity, and water are included. That arrangement can make weekly budgeting easier, since students do not have to account separately for those three household services.
The facilities cover the less visible parts of university life as well. A student may need a quiet place to study one day and a social space the next, which is why the presence of study rooms, social spaces, and a games room can be useful. On-site events, craft workshops, and cooking classes provide organized ways to meet other residents, while study support & wellbeing activities add further support during the academic year.
Fitness and recreation are also part of the property, with a gym, swimming pool, and basketball court available to residents. On-site management and maintenance provide practical support, while on-site security and secure door entry address everyday safety and access.
Location is one of the most compelling reasons to look at the property. The University of Melbourne is close by, and Victoria University and the William Angliss Institute Australia are nearby. Carlton provides supermarkets, including Woolworths Carlton and Coles Express Carlton; cafes and restaurants along Lygon Street and other parts of the community; libraries; parks; and retail facilities in and around the apartments.
Public transport provides yet another convenience. There are bus and tram stops very nearby, connecting Carlton to various areas of Melbourne, along with Parkville Railway Station and State Library Station.
All of these qualities together make the student village at the University of Melbourne campus a good option for students who want to be close to the university for their accommodation but also want to be able to get out and about in the larger city. It has many room types, has basic utilities, has study and relaxation areas, and is in a convenient location where most daily needs are easily met without driving far.

Ever since I started studying at UniMelb, SVM has truly been my home away from home. I’ve been living here for the past 2.5 years, and my experience has been nothing but positive :) I haven’t encountered any major issues, and the staff have always been friendly, supportive & readily available whenever I needed assistance. It’s been a comfortable and welcoming place to live, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for student accommodation.

Lived here. The wifi barely worked, it was incredibly slow and would turn on/off at random, so things like Zoom calls were near impossible. When I moved in, my room was dirty, and the chair in my room had suspicious stains on it. The fan when turned on would make a loud clicking sound like it wasn't screwed into the wall correctly, and despite forcing them to come fix it twice, it was never actually fixed. Despite that, and despite leaving the room fully cleaned with the help of another (who literally works as a cleaner as a side hustle) I did not recieve the full bond back.

SVM is an accommodation with the next level. It is not just a place to stay, but the most important for me is it is a place to be part of communities. There are bunch of facilities to have fin with friends. If you want to meet new besties, you can join many events held by the SVM team, it covers from art, baking class, or trivia nights, movie nights or just a casual delicious cooking events!
