Finding somewhere to live is one of those decisions that tends to become much more important once university actually starts. The distance to campus matters, but so do the things around your accommodation: where you can buy groceries, grab a coffee between classes, meet friends, study outside your room, or catch public transport when you need to cross the city. Sydney University Village brings these parts of student life together from its location in Newtown, Sydney.
Situated at 90 Carillon Ave, Newtown NSW 2042, the property places students in Sydney's inner west, close to the University of Sydney and within reach of a wide selection of shops, cafés, restaurants, parks, and other everyday amenities. Newtown itself has a strong student presence, along with its well-known food, arts, and entertainment scene, so there is plenty happening around the accommodation once the academic day is over.
The property offers several types of accommodation, too. Students can choose a private studio or one-bedroom arrangement, while larger two-, four-, and five-bedroom options provide shared living. There is also a one-bedroom suite and a studio apartment with a kitchenette, giving students a few more configurations to compare before making a decision.
For anyone specifically looking for Sydney University Village accommodation, the location is one of the clearest advantages. The University of Sydney is nearby, while Newtown Station and Macdonaldtown Station provide connections to the wider Sydney rail network. Add the property's study areas, green space, on-site laundry, convenience store and security provisions, and the result is a student residence built around the practicalities of living away from home.
Sydney University Village Newtown sits in a part of Sydney where university life and the wider neighborhood naturally overlap. Students can be close to campus without being isolated from the rest of the suburb. King Street and the surrounding streets bring together cafés, restaurants, shops, and social venues, while public transport makes it possible to travel further into Sydney when required.
The property itself has a mixture of private and shared spaces. That distinction matters because students do not all approach accommodation in the same way. Someone moving to Sydney for the first time might appreciate having a private studio, while a group of friends may prefer sharing an apartment and having common space to use together.
There are also facilities within the village that address some of the less glamorous but very real parts of student living. An on-site laundry means residents do not have to find an external laundromat, while the supermarket or convenience store can be useful when something is needed quickly. Study rooms provide dedicated areas for academic work, and the communal green space offers somewhere to get outside without going far.
The social side has its own place as well. A pool table gives residents a shared recreational space where they can take a break from assignments, spend time with housemates, or meet people from other apartments.
In general, it’s a question of budget, privacy, and comfort level with communal life when choosing between private and shared lodging. The Sydney University Village offers a diversity of room arrangements so students can choose from a number of configurations rather than be forced into a particular setup.
Available accommodation types are:
Studio Apartments: Individual choice for students who want their own place.
One Bedroom Apartment: Offers a stand-alone one-bedroom unit with greater room and privacy.
Two Bedrooms: Perfect for friends or students who want a little extra space to spread out.
Four Bedrooms: A wider shared choice for students who like to live with a few housemates.
Five Bedrooms: Offers a more social arrangement, with multiple occupants sharing the flat.
One Bedroom Suite: A contained option for students who want to live in a contained way.
Studio with Kitchenette: Basic studio accommodation with basic cooking facilities.
The range means that Sydney Campus Village can cater for students with somewhat varied expectations of what their campus home should look like. Someone who wants a more social household can look toward the shared apartments, while a student who spends much of their time studying solo has the option of a private place.
Prices start from approximately AUD 473.5 per week, with the listed range extending up to around AUD 779.0 per week. The final amount depends on the accommodation type and the particular option being booked.

What's Included in Your Rent?
The weekly cost of accommodation is only part of a student's housing budget. Separate utility bills can make it harder to work out how much is actually being spent on living costs, particularly when you're managing household expenses for the first time.
At Sydney University Village, the listed rent includes four essential services:
Electricity Bill
Gas Bill
Water Bill
Wi-Fi
This arrangement means residents have fewer utility accounts to organize independently. Electricity, gas, and water are already covered, while Wi-Fi is available as part of the accommodation package.
For students trying to keep a close eye on weekly spending, having these services included can make the basic accommodation cost easier to understand. It also removes some of the administrative work that can come with setting up and managing separate household utilities.
Student accommodation Sydney has to work around more than lectures and sleep. Laundry, study space, somewhere to relax, and basic security all become part of everyday life once you're living away from home. Sydney University Village provides facilities across these areas, with a mixture of practical services and shared spaces.
Two of the property's facilities are aimed at making ordinary routines a little less complicated:
On-site Laundry: Residents can do their washing within the accommodation rather than finding and travelling to an external laundromat.
Supermarket / Convenience Store: A useful option for picking up groceries, snacks, or forgotten essentials without making a separate shopping trip.
Neither is particularly complicated, but both can save time during a busy week. Having laundry facilities in the same place you live is especially useful when your schedule is already shaped around classes and assignments.
Students also have access to areas that serve different purposes throughout the day.
Study Rooms: Dedicated quiet spaces for working on assignments, reading, and preparing for examinations.
Pool Table: A shared recreational facility where residents can relax, play with friends, and spend time away from their coursework.
Green Space: Communal outdoor areas where students can get some fresh air, sit outside, or take a break from their rooms.
The distinction between study and social areas gives residents some choice over how they spend their time at home. A student can head to a study room when concentration is needed, then use the communal areas when it is time to switch off.
Security is another practical consideration, particularly for students moving away from their family home or arriving in Sydney from overseas. Sydney University Village has several measures in place across the property:
24-hour security
CCTV
On-site security personnel
Secure Door Entry
Together, these provide controlled access to the accommodation and ongoing security arrangements for residents. For students comparing options at the University of Sydney Village, these features form an important part of the overall accommodation setup.
The Sydney University Village address is 90 Carillon Ave, Newtown, NSW 2042, placing students in one of Sydney's better-known inner-west suburbs. Newtown has a reputation for its bohemian character, arts scene, independent businesses, and diverse food culture, but its appeal for students is also quite practical.
The neighborhood provides plenty to do without requiring a trip into central Sydney every time you want to eat out, buy groceries, or meet someone for coffee. King Street and the surrounding area are filled with restaurants, cafés, shops, and social venues, while parks and public facilities provide alternatives when students want some time away from the busier streets.
The location is particularly useful for students attending the University of Sydney. The university is close enough to make the daily journey manageable, while Newtown's transport links open up the rest of Sydney for students studying elsewhere or simply wanting to explore the city.
Public transport is readily available around Sydney University Village. Students have nearby bus stops as well as railway stations, providing different ways to travel depending on their destination.
Two nearby bus stops listed for the property are:
Carillon Ave at Missenden Rd
King St at Carillon Ave
These stops connect the area with other parts of Sydney, giving students an option for journeys that are not best served by the train network.
Students can also use:
Newtown Station
Macdonaldtown Station
Both stations link into the greater Sydney train network. The rail network also connects students to Central Station, one of the city’s key transport hubs, providing them with further transit links across Sydney and beyond.
These transport links are especially important for students studying at a university outside of Newtown. So residents have the bigger network close to their housing rather than having to walk or make little local trips.
The location of Sydney University Village is especially relevant to students at the University of Sydney. Its proximity makes the property particularly suitable for students who want their accommodation close to campus.
Other institutions listed include:
The source material specifically notes that some of these institutions are further afield. They should therefore not be treated as being as close to the property as the University of Sydney. Students attending those universities would need to factor their individual commute into their accommodation decision.
One of the advantages of living in Newtown is that all the daily needs and recreational activities are spread out over the surrounding area. Sydney University Village students have supermarkets for weekly shopping, cafes for quick breaks, restaurants for dinners out, parks for some time outdoors, and a number of locations to enjoy an evening with friends.
Students have several supermarkets within reach for regular groceries and household essentials:
Woolworths Newtown
Coles Broadway
ALDI Newtown
IGA Enmore
The mix gives students a choice between larger supermarkets and smaller local options. That can be useful whether you're doing a full weekly shop or simply need to pick up a few things on the way home.
Newtown's café scene is one of the area's more familiar features, with several places suited to breakfast, coffee or a casual catch-up.
Black Star Pastry Newtown: Known for its watermelon cake and popular among visitors looking for one of the area's recognisable food options.
Brewtown Newtown: A well-known café serving coffee and its popular cronuts.
Acre Eatery at Camperdown Commons: Offers a farm-to-table style experience in a more spacious setting.
Cuckoo Callay Newtown: Known for its creative breakfast and brunch menu.
For students, these places can serve different purposes depending on the day. Sometimes it's simply a matter of picking up coffee; on other occasions, a café becomes somewhere to sit down with friends and spend an hour away from the accommodation.
Newtown's restaurant scene gives students plenty of choice when they want a meal outside their own kitchen.
Mary's Newtown: Known for burgers and fried chicken.
Thai Pothong: A local favourite for Thai food.
Guzman y Gomez Newtown: A convenient option for Mexican-style casual dining.
Continental Deli Bar & Bistro: Offers European-inspired deli food along with cocktails.
The variety means students are not restricted to one particular type of cuisine around their accommodation. A quick casual meal and a longer dinner can both be accommodated within the neighbourhood.
Newtown is well placed for students who need to balance everyday errands with the occasional shopping trip. Smaller local options are useful for things that can be picked up close to home, while larger shopping centres provide a broader selection of stores and services.
Students living at Sydney University Village can visit:
Broadway Shopping Centre: A larger retail destination with a wide range of shops and services.
Newtown Central: A convenient option for local shopping and everyday requirements.
Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre: Another nearby destination with retail outlets and services.
The three options provide different shopping environments, so students can choose according to what they actually need rather than making every trip into the city.
Newtown and its surrounding suburbs also have several places where students can get away from the buildings and busy streets for a while. Having a park nearby can be useful during a long study week, whether the plan is to go for a walk, sit outside with a book or simply spend some time somewhere less enclosed.
Victoria Park is a spacious green area where students can take a walk, sit outside or have a casual picnic. Its location also makes it a convenient option when residents want some outdoor time without travelling a long distance.
Camperdown Memorial Rest Park offers a quieter local setting. It can be a useful place for a short break from the more active parts of Newtown.
For students looking for more open space, Sydney Park provides wetlands, hills and cycling paths. Its larger setting makes it suitable for walking and outdoor activities when a small neighbourhood park is not quite enough.
Prince Alfred Park adds another option, with a public swimming pool and sports facilities alongside its open areas. It can therefore work for students who want their time outdoors to involve some physical activity as well.
With university schedules getting busy it can be challenging to keep up with health and exercise so having amenities nearby might help make it easier to keep up a program. Students living in the Sydney University Village Newtown have access to the university’s own facilities and commercial fitness centers in the local area.
The lodging is near the University of Sydney Sports & Aquatic Center, which has a wide range of sports and aquatic amenities. It is especially convenient for students affiliated with the institution since it is on campus.
Students may also wish to consider:
Anytime Fitness Newtown
Fitness First Newtown
F45 Training Newtown
The diverse facilities give students options to exercise in different ways. If you want a regular gym, you’ve got plenty of options. F45 Training is a training style format more.
Newtown’s social life is among the reasons the suburb is popular with students and younger residents. There are plenty of locations to meet friends after courses, catch up over a drink or spend an evening away from the academic setting.
Some of the following alternatives nearby include:
The Bank Hotel: A popular pub that also hosts live music.
The Courthouse Hotel: A classic local pub with a beer garden.
Young Henrys Brewery & Cellar Door: A destination for students interested in the local craft beer scene.
The Imperial Hotel Erskineville: A historic venue known for its lively atmosphere.
These places give another depth to living in Newtown. Students can stay in and relax at home when they want to, but they are also near established social venues when they want to go out.
The immediate area also covers some of the services students may need during their time at university.
Students have access to Fisher Library at the University of Sydney, which provides academic resources close to campus. Newtown Library is another option for students who want access to a public library and a different study environment.
Having alternatives can be useful when the university library is busy or when a student simply wants to work somewhere outside the usual campus setting.
For healthcare, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) and Chris O'Brien Lifehouse are located close to the area. These facilities provide access to medical services when students require more than routine healthcare.
There is no single feature that determines whether student accommodation works. The useful question is usually whether the location, room choices, facilities and surrounding area fit the way you expect to live. Sydney University Village has several advantages on those fronts, particularly for students who want to remain close to the University of Sydney while living in a neighbourhood with plenty happening around them.
The accommodation offers a reasonably broad choice of living arrangements. Students who want privacy can consider a Studio Apartment, One Bedroom Apartment or One Bedroom Suite, while the Two Bedrooms, Four Bedrooms and Five Bedrooms options provide shared living for those who are more comfortable with housemates. The Studio Apartment with Kitchenette adds another private option for students who want basic cooking facilities within their accommodation.
The prices listed are from around AUD 473.5 per week to about AUD 779.0 per week. The original source does not provide specific verified pricing for each type of lodging, so students should check the current booking data before making their final comparison.
Rent covers electricity, gas, water, and Wi-Fi, so you don’t have to worry about various recurrent household expenditures. That can make budgeting easier, especially for students who are handling rent and living expenses on their own for the first time.
The facilities also have to do with the practical part of life. On-site laundry means no need to worry about finding a laundrette. The supermarket or convenience shop can be a godsend for little grocery errands and forgotten supplies. Study Rooms allow residents dedicated spaces to study, and the Green Space is an outdoor space for residents to lounge or take a break. The Pool Table is a simple leisure option within the premises.
Security is also addressed through 24-hour security, CCTV, On-Site Security personnel, and Secure Door Entry. These provisions give residents controlled access to their accommodation and additional security support as part of the property.
Then there is the location itself. The Sydney University Village address at 90 Carillon Ave, Newtown NSW 2042 places students in a neighbourhood where university life sits alongside a large selection of cafés, restaurants, shops and social venues. Woolworths Newtown, Coles Broadway, ALDI Newtown and IGA Enmore cover regular grocery needs, while Broadway Shopping Centre, Newtown Central and Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre provide broader retail options.
Food is another strong part of the neighbourhood. Students can find coffee and brunch at places such as Black Star Pastry Newtown, Brewtown Newtown, Acre Eatery at Camperdown Commons and Cuckoo Callay Newtown. For meals, there are options including Mary's Newtown, Thai Pothong, Guzman y Gomez Newtown and Continental Deli Bar & Bistro.
The area also leaves room for life away from shops and restaurants. Victoria Park, Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, Sydney Park and Prince Alfred Park give students several places to spend time outdoors. Fitness options include the University of Sydney Sports & Aquatic Centre, Anytime Fitness Newtown, Fitness First Newtown and F45 Training Newtown.
Transport adds another practical advantage. Carillon Ave at Missenden Rd and King St at Carillon Ave provide nearby bus connections, while Newtown Station and Macdonaldtown Station connect students with Sydney's train network. Central Station is also accessible by train, opening up further connections across the city.
For students attending the University of Sydney, the location is particularly relevant because the campus is close to the accommodation. Students at other institutions listed in the source, including the University of Technology Sydney, Raffles College of Design And Commerce, University of Notre Dame, and Australian Film, Television and Radio School, can use the area's transport connections for their commutes. Some of the other listed institutions, such as the University of Wollongong, University of New England, Victoria University and Western Sydney University, are further afield and should be considered with that longer travel requirement in mind.
Overall, Sydney University Village accommodation provides a combination of private and shared rooms, included utilities, basic student facilities and a Newtown location that keeps many everyday requirements within reach. Students looking for a University Village Sydney option close to the University of Sydney may find the property particularly suitable, while its transport connections also make the wider city accessible.
For someone comparing Sydney University Village options, the main consideration is therefore fairly straightforward: it offers the convenience of living close to one of Sydney's major universities while placing residents in a suburb with its own established food, shopping, recreation and social scene.

Save your money and don’t come here. I went to Y Suites before here it was so much better!!! It is more expensive but worth it compared to this place. There’s a staff who works here. She is caucasian- not the older lady, the younger one. Not sure what her name is but she needs to be evicted- absolutely horrific temperament. The rooms are outdated / poorly maintained. When I moved in the room was not clean at all, despite continuing to charge me a cleaning fee when I left Bugs come in all the time… disgusting Do not come here… go elsewhere !

The staff here generally have a very poor and impatient attitude. The only time I experienced good service was during my first check-in when I was with my parents. The staff treat any request for help as if it's a huge burden. I would like to specifically mention a few individuals: a Latino man with glasses and curly hair, an older Asian woman with long hair parted in the middle and tied in a ponytail, and a shorter Southeast Asian long hair woman who seems to be an intern. If you happen to forget your key and politely ask them to open the door, they will give you a look of pure annoyance. They even stomp loudly up the stairs, making the whole house shake with their footsteps. I don’t understand—isn't this part of your job? Why so impatient? I pay a lot of rent to live here, not to be treated like this. If you don't enjoy your job, you shouldn't be doing it. Furthermore, when I first arrived, I wasn't sure where to fill in my bank details for the rent payment. Since my English isn't perfect, I went to the desk for help. The staff member spoke very fast, and even though he realized I didn't fully understand, he actually sped up his speaking and became increasingly frustrated. When I asked him to show me how to do it on my phone, he refused and kept repeating that he had already explained it. Most residents here are international students. This environment is extremely unfriendly to students who are still learning English. To be honest, I feel anxious every time I have to approach the front desk. I strongly hope the company provides better professional training for their staff.

Good place for students. - The village is located at a prime location in Newtown with all the cafes and shops at only a few minutes walking distance, it is also very close to Sydney University. - The rooms are quite clean with all the basic amenities. - The common areas in the apartments and in the village are a great place to relax and catch-up with friends. - The social events run by the village management are great for meeting new people. Personally, I love the green foliage around the village and the friendly staff.
Up Grow
1. Lift was broken when I move in. 2. The public kitchen is in another building (no kitchen in the unit). There is no roof on the way to the kitchen when rainy. That kitchen is small as well. 3. Taking over four weeks to get the bond back, while there was no issue that is fully returned. It is ridiculously long compared to other student accommodations. 4. Allocating an accessible room which had too big wide and not maintained restroom, without any notice until the move in day. If you can find another option, don't choose this place. Yes, It is okay to live, but [[not worth]] of that amount of rent.

As someone with very little choice and a late round offer, SUV was the only place I could get residence before semester started. The staff are friendly and approachable and I get the sense they genuinely care about the residents. (Edit) After trying to get my deposit back for months and months due to an error on SUV's part, I have to amend my statement that the ONSITE staff are friendly and excellent. Admin and management are absolutely horrendous. I had to play email ping pong for months trying to get a straight answer on where my deposit was. I had staff assure me that they would ring me back (they didn't multiple times), told to call on multiple different days to speak to an accountant who changed the days that they worked, got verbally abused by an admin staff who angrily told me that all of the screw ups and miscommunication 'weren't her fault' despite her being the one I was in correspondance with when all I wanted was a straight answer and prompt communication. My advice to you is ask for Joana the manager if you have ANY concerns. All of the admin staff are either lazy, maliciously non-compliant or anything that goes wrong is 'not their fault'. -1/10 for this kind of shoddy customer service. The price that you are paying for rent is ridiculous ($420 per week) for a 5 bedroom setup has one fridge that barely fits the groceries of 2-3 people let alone 5 and with no dishwasher. The bathrooms and showers are very poorly designed, with the showers regularly leaking onto the whole floor of the bathroom with no proper drainage in any of the bathrooms leading to slippery and messy floors (a slipping hazard). The photos of the shower they have attached? That is not what they look like, imagine that but with no glass enclosure, and as a result the water floods the whole bathroom. The whole place is not air conditioned, with the fans in rooms being wholly inadequate to deal with a Sydney summer. If you want to bring your own air cooler, the windows have screens that don't allow vents to be placed out the window. There are frequent pest infestation like cockroaches that invade the bathrooms and kitchens. Worst of all there are no attached laundry facilities onsite or in rooms. The only nearby laundromat is $8 to wash and dry one small load of clothes, so if you want to wash a big load that's $16 just to do 2 loads of laundry. The only plus I can give is its proximity to campus. If you want to stay on campus, go to a residential college, because they have much better facilities that are much better maintained with food included that works out to what you pay in groceries anyway, laundromat services libraries and overall a better experience at roughly the same cost.
