The University College of Osteopathy (UCO) is the oldest and largest osteopathic educational institution in the UK, with a history dating back over a century. It has played a significant role in the development and recognition of osteopathy as a healthcare profession both in the UK and internationally. The UCO is located in central London and is dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-informed osteopathic education, producing graduates who are skilled, patient-centered practitioners.

Student life at the UCO offers a close-knit and focused experience within a specialist healthcare education environment, enhanced by its central London location. Here's a glimpse:

Close-knit Community: The UCO is known for its friendly and supportive atmosphere. Being a specialist institution, it tends to have a smaller student body, fostering a strong sense of community where students and staff often know each other.

Central London Location: Situated in London, students benefit from access to the city's vibrant cultural scene, entertainment, and transport links. The UCO itself is well-connected by public transport.

Students' Union: The UCO has an active Students' Union that organizes social events and represents the interests of the student body. Activities can include parties, annual balls, sports days, and fundraising drives.

Facilities: The UCO provides specialized facilities essential for osteopathic training.

Clinical Experience: A significant aspect of student life at the UCO is the extensive clinical experience gained through the on-site clinic. Students have the opportunity to see a high volume and wide diversity of patients, enhancing their practical skills.

Student Support: The UCO offers various support services to students, including academic and personal support, disability services, and career guidance.

Accommodation: The UCO does not provide its own accommodation but offers support to students in finding suitable places to live in London, a city with diverse housing options, including private halls of residence.

Employability: The UCO has a strong focus on graduate employability, with graduates progressing to careers in private practice, the NHS, sports, research, and education.

Considering the central Southwark location, here are some popular and convenient areas for student accommodation:

  • Southwark: Offers a mix of modern apartments and some student-specific housing, often within walking distance or a short bus ride to the UCO. Can be moderately expensive.
  • Elephant & Castle: Located south of Southwark, often more affordable with a significant student population and excellent transport links (Northern and Bakerloo lines).
  • Bermondsey: East of London Bridge, a trendy area with a mix of warehouse conversions and apartments, accessible by walking or a short bus/Tube ride (Jubilee Line).
  • Waterloo/Lambeth: West of Southwark, offers proximity to Waterloo Station and good transport links, can be relatively expensive closer to the station.
  • London Bridge: Offers proximity to the UCO (especially the eastern end of Borough High Street), but tends to be pricier.
  • Kennington: South of Elephant & Castle, more affordable with good Northern Line connections.
  • Canada Water: To the east, a developing area with good Jubilee Line and Overground links, potentially more affordable than central areas.

You're in a fantastic central location on the South Bank with incredible access to iconic London attractions:

Within Walking Distance (15-20 minutes):

  • Borough Market: A fantastic food market with a wide array of artisanal produce and street food.
  • The Shard: Offers panoramic views of London.
  • Tate Modern: A leading gallery of international modern and contemporary art.
  • Shakespeare's Globe Theatre: A reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre.
  • South Bank Cultural Complex: Includes the National Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Hayward Gallery, and BFI Southbank (a slightly longer walk across London Bridge).
  • London Bridge: Iconic bridge with historical significance.
  • Tower Bridge: An iconic Victorian bridge (a bit further east).
  • HMS Belfast: A historic warship moored on the Thames.
  • The Tower of London: A historic castle (a bit further east).

A Short Tube or Bus Ride Away (Within 30 minutes):

  • Houses of Parliament & Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower): Iconic landmarks in Westminster.
  • Westminster Abbey: Historic church with royal connections.
  • Buckingham Palace: The official residence of the monarch.
  • Trafalgar Square & The National Gallery: Major art and public spaces.
  • The British Museum: World-renowned museum with vast collections.
  • Covent Garden: Lively area with street performers and shops.
  • West End (Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus): Theatre and entertainment district.

Getting to UCO (Southwark Campus):

  • By Tube (London Underground): Several Tube stations are within a short walking distance:
    • Borough Station (Northern Line): Approximately a 2-minute walk.
    • London Bridge Station (Northern and Jubilee lines): Approximately a 5-7 minute walk.
    • Elephant & Castle Station (Northern and Bakerloo lines): Approximately a 10-12 minute walk.

  • By Train (National Rail):
    • London Bridge Station: A major National Rail terminus with connections across the South East.
    • Elephant & Castle Station: Also has National Rail services.
    • Waterloo East Station: A short walk or one stop from London Bridge.

  • By Bus: The Borough High Street area is served by numerous bus routes. Use the Transport for London (TfL) website or a journey planner app (like Citymapper or Google Maps) to find the most convenient routes from your accommodation or other parts of London. Look for buses serving Borough High Street and London Bridge.

  • By Walking and Cycling: Southwark is a central location, and depending on where you live, walking and cycling to the campus are feasible.

Student Travel Within London:

  • Oyster Card or Contactless Payment: The most convenient way to pay for public transport in London (Tube, buses, trams, DLR, and most National Rail services).
  • Travel Zones: The UCO is located within Zone 1. Ensure your Oyster card or ticket covers this zone.
  • Bus Hopper Fare: Allows unlimited bus and tram journeys within one hour of your first tap-in.
  • Daily and Weekly Capping: Oyster and contactless payments have daily and weekly caps, limiting how much you spend.

Student Discounts on Travel:

  • 18+ Student Oyster Photocard: If you are 18 or over, enrolled on a full-time course in London, and meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard. This gives you 30% off adult-rate Travelcards and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets. Check the TfL website for details and application.
  • National Rail Discounts: If you use National Rail services frequently for travel within or outside London, a 16-25 Railcard can save you 1/3 on most fares.
