If you study at UEL, you’ll be joining one of London’s most diverse university communities. The campus culture mirrors the multicultural nature of East London itself, with students from well over a hundred nationalities. There is so much more to academic life than lectures, and plenty of possibilities to join groups, play sport, attend events and explore one of the world’s most exciting cities.
If you’re living in University of East London student accommodation, or privately renting nearby, you’ll have access to all sorts of activities throughout the year.
Students' Union and Campus Community
The University of East London Students' Union (UELSU) supports students across both the Docklands and Stratford campuses through events, campaigns and student-led activities.
Students can choose from more than 80 clubs and societies, covering academic interests, cultural communities, volunteering, entrepreneurship, performing arts and recreational activities. The university's diverse student population means there are plenty of opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds while exploring new interests outside your course.
UELSU also organises welcome events, wellbeing initiatives and careers-focused activities that help students settle into university life from the beginning of the academic year.
Sport and Fitness
Sport plays an important role at UEL, particularly at the Docklands Campus.
The university's SportsDock is one of London's leading university sports facilities. The centre includes modern gyms, sports halls, fitness studios and training facilities that famously hosted Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Students can join competitive university teams or simply use the facilities to stay active throughout the year. Basketball, athletics, football and fitness programmes remain particularly popular.
Social Life Across East London
Living in East London gives UEL students access to a huge variety of entertainment without needing to travel far.
Students based near Stratford often spend evenings around Westfield Stratford City, where restaurants, cafés, cinemas and entertainment venues stay busy throughout the week. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park also hosts concerts, seasonal events and outdoor activities across the year.
Hackney Wick has developed into one of London's best-known creative districts, with independent cafés, canal-side bars, breweries, music venues and art spaces attracting students from across the city.
Meanwhile, the Royal Docks continue to host waterfront events, food festivals and community activities that add to the social life around the Docklands Campus.
Shopping and Everyday Living
Students have plenty of shopping options regardless of which campus they attend.
Westfield Stratford City is one of Europe's largest shopping centres, offering supermarkets, fashion retailers, restaurants, cinemas and everyday essentials in one location.
Students looking for a different experience often visit Green Street, East Ham or local East London markets, where independent businesses and international food stores provide affordable alternatives to major supermarkets.
Culture and Places to Explore
One of the biggest advantages of studying at UEL is having London on your doorstep.
Students regularly visit the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London Stadium, the ArcelorMittal Orbit and the ABBA Arena, all located close to Stratford. The Docklands area offers waterside walks and easy access to Canary Wharf, while central London's museums, galleries and theatres are only a short Underground journey away.
Living in East London also places students close to some of the capital's best-known street art, historic markets and creative neighbourhoods, making weekends easy to fill without travelling long distances.
Healthcare and Student Wellbeing
Healthcare services are easily accessible from both university campuses.
Students based around Stratford are served by Newham University Hospital, while those closer to Whitechapel benefit from the nearby Royal London Hospital. Registering with a local GP soon after arriving in London is recommended, and UEL also provides wellbeing services, counselling and academic support throughout the year.
Safety and Living in East London
East London has changed considerably over the past decade, with major investment transforming areas such as Stratford, the Royal Docks and Canning Town.
These neighbourhoods remain busy throughout the day thanks to students, residents and commuters. As with any major city, students should stay aware of their surroundings, particularly when travelling late at night, but UEL's campuses and surrounding areas are well connected and regularly used by the university community.
