Choosing the right suburb makes a real difference to your experience. Melbourne has a good range of options near Parkville, and the tram network means you are never too far from campus even if you live a few kilometres out.
Carlton (VIC 3053)
Carlton is the classic student suburb and for good reason. It sits right on the university's doorstep, between zero and 1.5 kilometres from campus, which means most students can walk in five to twenty minutes. Lygon Street runs through the heart of it, famous for its Italian restaurants, cafes, and bars, and Princes Park is nearby when you need some green space.
If you want to be in the thick of student life with the shortest possible commute, Carlton is where most people end up. Share rooms here typically run from AU$280 to AU$420 per week, and a one-bedroom apartment comes in at around AU$420 to AU$520 per week. It is not the cheapest option, but the location justifies it for a lot of students.
North Melbourne (VIC 3051)
North Melbourne is a slightly quieter, more residential alternative to Carlton. The campus is one to two and a half kilometres away, so it is still very walkable at ten to twenty minutes, or a short tram ride if you prefer. Errol Street has a good selection of cafes, and the Queen Victoria Market is close by, which is genuinely useful for weekly grocery shopping. Share rooms generally cost AU$270 to AU$400 per week. It suits students who want to be near campus without being right in the middle of everything.
Brunswick (VIC 3056)
Brunswick is about four kilometres from campus, which sounds further than it is. The Route 19 tram gets you to Parkville in twelve to fifteen minutes, and the suburb has developed a strong share-house culture over the years. Sydney Road is the main strip, with markets, live music venues, and a multicultural mix of food and shops. Rent is noticeably cheaper here than in Carlton or Fitzroy, with shared rooms typically coming in at AU$260 to AU$380 per week. It is a popular choice for postgraduate students and anyone who wants more space and better value without sacrificing the commute too much.
Fitzroy (VIC 3065)
Fitzroy is about three kilometres from campus, roughly ten to fifteen minutes by tram or bus. Brunswick Street is the draw here, lined with bars, art galleries, and vintage shops, and the suburb has a strong creative and bohemian character. Share rooms run from AU$300 to AU$430 per week, making it one of the pricier options, but students who want that lifestyle tend to feel it is worth paying for.
Melbourne CBD and Southbank
The city centre is about three kilometres from Parkville, which is a quick ten-minute tram ride straight up Swanston Street. High-rise city living, direct tram access, the Yarra riverfront, major shopping, and every transport connection you could need. Share rooms in shared apartments typically cost AU$320 to AU$450 per week. It suits international students particularly well, especially those who want maximum convenience and do not mind paying for it.
One practical thing to note: rents in Carlton and North Melbourne tend to be higher than Melbourne's citywide average because of how close they are to campus and the biomedical precinct. Tram routes 19, 96, and 86 all run good connections from the northern suburbs directly to Parkville, so living a little further out is manageable
