Guildhall and the University Quarter
Guildhall gives the central academic buildings their shortest residential routes.
Trafalgar Hall occupies Middle Street and takes around three minutes to reach from the university. Rosalind Franklin Hall also gives residents a three-minute walk. Harry Law Hall takes approximately seven minutes, while Margaret Rule Hall takes around eight.
The area keeps the library, Students’ Union, Ravelin Sports Centre, Guildhall Walk and Portsmouth & Southsea station nearby. Commercial Road and Cascades cover groceries, pharmacies and everyday shopping.
Guildhall Walk attracts evening activity from bars, restaurants and music venues. Bedrooms facing the busiest roads may receive noise after lectures finish. Ask where the window faces and check the street during the evening.
Central accommodation near the University of Portsmouth usually costs more than Langstone or an ordinary Southsea house, but residents save money and time on daily transport.
Middle Street and Northern Southsea
Middle Street and Earlsdon Street occupy the space between the university quarter and the northern part of Southsea.
Trafalgar Hall, Collegiate Middle Street and Collegiate Earlsdon Street all use this part of the city. Current private listings begin at £185 for the available Trafalgar Hall room, £207 for a studio at Earlsdon Street and £240 for a studio at Middle Street.
The academic route remains short, while Albert Road and Southsea’s independent businesses lie farther south. This area gives residents easy access to both parts of their week without requiring a bus.
Room format changes the price more than the postcode. Trafalgar offers shared-flat en-suites, while the currently displayed Earlsdon Street and Middle Street entry rates relate to studios.
Portsmouth & Southsea Station and Victoria Park
The streets around Portsmouth & Southsea station include Catherine House, Margaret Rule Hall, Greetham Street, Stanhope House and Crown Place.
The station helps students who travel home regularly or use rail services for placements. Victoria Park provides open space beside Catherine House, while Commercial Road begins a few minutes away.
Catherine House charges £177 to £187 per week through the official university allocation. Greetham Street charges £193 to £200. Margaret Rule Hall charges £177 to £182 for an en-suite and £193 for a studio.
Students considering Margaret Rule Hall should note that Unite Students plans external façade and window work during 2026–27. Contractors will carry out weekday work between 8 am and 6 pm, and residents may need to leave their room for one working day during window replacement.
Portsea and the Harbour Side
Portsea lies north-west of the central university area between the Historic Dockyard, Gunwharf Quays and the residential streets around Queen Street.
The neighbourhood gives access to waterfront shopping, Portsmouth Harbour station and the naval heritage district. The university route may take 15 to 30 minutes according to the address.
Europa House and St James Street appear among the managed options in this part of Portsmouth. Private houses and converted flats also form part of the local market.
A harbour-side address may appeal to someone who prefers a quieter evening than Guildhall Walk. Check the route after dark because the streets around dockyard buildings can feel less active once shops and offices close.
Old Portsmouth
Old Portsmouth occupies the historic streets around the cathedral, Spice Island and the harbour entrance.
Private flats dominate the local market. Purpose-built student buildings remain less common than they are around Guildhall or Commercial Road.
The university usually takes 15 to 25 minutes to reach on foot. Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Harbour station remain nearby.
Rents can reflect the waterfront location and character of the buildings. Older flats also require a careful inspection of heating, windows and damp.
Southsea and Albert Road
Southsea provides much of Portsmouth’s conventional student-house market.
Albert Road has supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, takeaways, music venues and independent shops. Terraced streets extend towards Fawcett Road, Elm Grove, Fratton and the seafront.
A student house near the University of Portsmouth in northern Southsea may place campus within 15 minutes on foot. A house closer to the seafront can add another 10 to 20 minutes.
Southsea works particularly well for groups who already know one another. A complete house normally gives the household a lounge and larger kitchen, though tenants take more responsibility for cleaning, bills and maintenance reporting.
Street noise changes quickly. A property behind Albert Road may feel calm, while a front bedroom on the main road may hear traffic and evening venues.
Southsea Seafront
The seafront gives residents Southsea Common, the beach and coastal walking routes.
Rees Hall occupies this area and charges £197 per week for a catered en-suite. The university estimates a 12-minute walk to campus. Breakfast and dinner form part of the catering arrangement.
Private flats near the seafront may cost more than similar homes farther north. The location also exposes properties to coastal wind and salt, which can affect windows, bicycles and exterior fixtures.
A seafront room makes daily access to the Common easy. It does not automatically give the shortest university route, especially for buildings near the station.
Fratton
Fratton lies east of the central campus and offers traditional houses, flats, supermarkets and its own railway station.
The university normally takes 20 to 35 minutes to reach on foot from much of the area. The U1 bus also covers parts of the route through Portsmouth and Southsea.
Fratton can reduce the rent for a group that accepts a longer walk. It also helps students who travel through Fratton station or want larger supermarkets nearby.
Check the exact street before booking. Homes near Fratton Bridge provide a different journey from properties farther towards Copnor.
Milton
Milton lies between the central university area and Langstone Harbour.
The neighbourhood provides traditional houses, green space and access to Milton Common. Residents can walk, cycle or use university and local buses.
Milton gives sports club members a more convenient route towards Langstone. Students with most teaching around Guildhall need a longer weekday journey.
A private room here should cost enough less than a central hall to justify the added travel time.
Langstone
Trust Hall and Langstone Flats occupy the university’s Langstone site beside the sports pitches and harbour.
Trust Hall provides a private bedroom with shared bathrooms for £115 per week. Six to eight people share each flat. Langstone Flats charges £142 for an en-suite bedroom in a flat of up to eight residents.
The U2 bus connects Langstone with the city-centre campus during term from Monday to Friday. The service does not operate during weekends, public holidays or academic breaks.
Langstone gives students the lowest official hall prices and a calmer coastal setting. The daily routine depends more heavily on the bus timetable than any central hall.
