Student life at King's College London extends well beyond lectures. With campuses spread across central London, students become part of one of the world's largest cultural and academic centres.
The university backs hundreds of student-led activities, while London's museums, theatres, music venues, restaurants, and public spaces give plenty to do outside class. Joining a society, playing sport, attending student events, or just getting out and exploring the city are all part of what being at King's actually looks like day to day.
King's College London Students' Union
The KCLSU supports more than 300 student societies. It is one of the oldest students' unions in the UK. You can join academic societies, cultural groups, volunteering programmes, performing arts clubs, political organisations, faith societies, and hobby-based communities.
These societies run regular events throughout the year and give students real chances to meet people from different faculties and campuses.
KCLSU also runs social spaces across several campuses, including the popular Guy's Bar at Guy's Campus and The Vault, giving students somewhere to relax between lectures or catch up with friends after class. King's active student media union, features outlets like Roar News and KCL Radio. It gives a very practical experience for those interested in journalism and broadcasting.
Throughout the year, the Students' Union puts on welcome events, careers activities, cultural celebrations, and student-led campaigns across the university.
Sports and Fitness
Students interested in sport can get involved in recreational and competitive activities through King's Sport & Wellness. The university backs teams competing in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions across numerous disciplines, including football, rugby, netball, basketball, rowing, tennis, hockey, and cricket.
A major highlight of the sports calendar is the yearly London Varsity matchup against UCL, it is, well, a highly competitive rivalry that unites the student body to celebrate college pride and athletic excellence.
Nightlife and Social Scene
King's central location puts students close to many of London's best-known entertainment districts. Covent Garden, Soho, South Bank, London Bridge, and Shoreditch are all easily accessible from the university and have a genuinely wide selection of cafés, restaurants, pubs, theatres, music venues, and nightlife.
Guy's Bar, one of the oldest student bars in London, hosts quiz nights, live music, themed evenings, and social events throughout the academic year. The South Bank also becomes a popular spot after lectures, with riverside restaurants, street performances, seasonal markets, and cultural events running year-round.
Shopping and Markets
King's students have access to some of London's best shopping markets. For getting everyday essentials near the Strand and Aldgate Campuses you will find small-small supermarkets over there. But the only issue is that they are a little overpriced. Covent Garden has a lot of things so you will get a better shopping experience. Borough Market, close to Guy's Campus, is one of London's oldest food markets and a popular spot for fresh produce and street food.
Culture and Events
Many of London’s top cultural attractions are within an easy reach of students at King’s College London. Somerset House, located next to the Strand Campus, hosts art exhibitions, summer outdoor events and one of London’s most popular winter ice rinks.
Students can also visit the National Theatre, BFI (British Film Institute) and the Southbank Centre, all of which run theatre productions, film screenings, concerts and cultural events throughout the year, just across the River Thames.
London also has a large number of free national museums and galleries, so students can enjoy world famous collections and exhibitions without spending much. These attractions provide plenty of opportunities for King’s students to enjoy the city’s cultural life while studying in central London.
Healthcare and Safety
Register with a local GP after arriving in London. King's has close links with several leading NHS hospitals, including Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, and King's College Hospital, giving students access to healthcare across different parts of the city.
Central London stays busy throughout the day and evening, particularly around the university's campuses. Students heading home after lectures have access to extensive Underground, bus, and rail services. As with any large city, it's worth staying aware of your surroundings, particularly when travelling late at night.
